In this paper we propose and evaluate a methodology for run-time fast software component migration for application survivability in distributed real-time systems. For fast migration we focus on the two dominant factors; lightweight migration and proactive resource discovery. The former is to minimize the absolute amount of time required for migration and the latter is to provide a destination host information at the time of migration decision. The run-time software component is implemented as Java object whose class is defined by extending the unicast remote server class. The proactive resource discovery consists of Community protocol and associated algorithms. These two ideas have been implemented as a middleware that also provides a real-time job scheduler in JVM (Java Virtual Machine), and a naming server. Our analysis and simulation in a cluster computing environment show that the proactive resource discovery requires very low communication overhead while maintaining high effectiveness in finding available CPU resources. Our implementation and measurement show that run-time component migration based on our approach takes much less time compared to the approach based on reactive resource discovery

This paper presents a framework for generic modeling of distributed embedded applications. An application is decomposed into services and mapped on a set of distributed nodes, whereas each node hosts one or more services. Each service is described by four interfaces: a real-time input/output, a configuration and planning (CP), and a diagnostic and management (DM) interface. The overall application is described by a cluster configuration description that specifies the interaction of services within and across nodes. The application requirements, the service properties of a node, and the interaction of the services as well as the application mapping are described formally with XML descriptions. The XML format allows a language-neutral and extensible semantic description of interfaces supporting the implementation of context-aware tools for modeling, scheduling, monitoring, simulation, and validation. A central concept of the model is the interface file system (IFS) that acts as a distributed shared memory and transparently implements the interfaces to services from other nodes. In principle, the communication system that updates the data in the IFS data is not bound to a specific implementation as long as it fulfills the given timing requirements. The presented concepts are applied in a case study that uses the time-triggered fieldbus protocol TTP/A for the implementation of a small sensor fusion application

Dependability of complex systems is a critical system-level issue, which is still insufficiently tackled today. We propose the adoption of an aggressive model-driven development paradigm (AMDD) to adequately capture globally scoped issues like interoperability and compatibility. AMDD moves most of the recurring problems of compatibility and consistency of a system's design, implementation and evolution from the coding and integration level to the modeling level. In particular it enables an economical treatment of cross-system issues. This approach has proven useful already for the design, realization and test of complex distributed applications. In this paper we discuss the potential and benefits of AMDD and present examples where it is already adopted

We extend time/utility functions and utility accrual model with the concept of joint utility functions (or JUFs) that allow an activity's utility to be described as a function of the completion times of other activities and their progress. We also specify the concept of progressive utility that generalizes the previously studied imprecise computational model, by describing an activity's utility as a function of its progress. Given such an extended utility accrual model, we consider the scheduling criterion of maximizing the weighted sum of completion time, progressive, and joint utilities. We present an algorithm called the combined utility accrual algorithm (or CUA)for this criterion. Experimental measurements with an implementation of CUA on a POSIX RTOS illustrate the effectiveness of JUFs in a class of applications of interest to us

QoS-enabled component middleware solutions can help reduce the programming complexity of configuring real-time aspects, such as priorities and rates of invocation. However, few empirical studies have been conducted to guide distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) system developers in choosing among alternative configuration mechanisms and performance optimization techniques in practice. This paper makes three contributions to research on QoS-enabled component middleware for DRE systems in the context of the component-integrated ACE ORB (CIAO). First, it describes the design of CIAO's static component configuration mechanisms, which enhance configurability by avoiding features that are not supported by key real-time platforms, while reducing run-time overhead and footprint. Second, it compares the performance of dynamic and static configuration mechanisms in CIAO to help guide the selection of suitable configuration mechanisms based on specific requirements of each DRE system. Third, it presents an empirical comparison of CIAO's static configuration mechanisms to the static configuration mechanisms in Boeing's PRISM avionics component middleware solution.

Applications and studies of middleware and component based development that is used in business and desktop system into distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) software is a popular topic. CORBA component model (CCM) solved issues for component-based development in multi-platform and language independence. While for DRE software, CCM has some limitations. This paper first introduces component model and CCM, and then characterize the key challenges confronting DRE software researchers and developers, and lastly presents an optimized component model named Z-CCM in order to increase development productivity for DRE software. Z-CCM optimizes CCM mainly on 3 aspects: 1) QoS assurance provision, 2) coupling of component meta-data with component functionality, 3) component reliability.

At the last EDOC conference we presented our open modelling infrastructure "medini" which is based on MOF compliant meta-tools. Based on medini, we have developed a modelling suite for telecom services which consists of EDOC as a platform independent modelling technique and CORBA/Corba component model (CCM) as a platform specific modelling technique. Since that time, this modelling suite has been significantly enhanced: Support for Web services has been added as an alternative target platform and we have extended the model transformers to consider EDOC behavior models (namely choreographies). The behavior descriptions can now be transformed to Web service behavior expressed using BPEL (business process execution language) and to behavior descriptions for our CORBA/CCM based platform facilitating UML 2 state-machines and the creation of Java code. We explain our behavior transformations and report on the experiences we have made by simultaneously addressing two different target platforms with different kinds of behavior descriptions.

Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) middleware is now widely used to develop distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems. DRE systems are themselves increasingly combined to form "systems of systems" that have diverse quality of service (QoS) requirements. Earlier generations of COTS middleware, such as object Request Brokers (ORBs) based on the CORBA 2.x standard, do not facilitate the separation of QoS policies from application functionality, which makes it hard to configure and validate complex DRE applications. The new generation of component middleware, such as the CORBA component model (CCM) based on the CORBA 3.0 standard, addresses the limitations of earlier generation middleware by establishing standards for implementing, packaging, assembling, and deploying component implementations. There has been little systematic empirical study of the performance characteristics of component middleware implementations in the context of DRE systems. This paper therefore provides three contributions to the study of CCM for DRE systems. First, we describe the challenges involved in benchmarking different CORBA component model (CCM) implementations. Second, we describe key criteria for comparing different CCM implementations using key black-box and white-box metrics. Third, we describe the design of our CCMPerf benchmarking suite to illustrate test categories that evaluate aspects of CCM implementation to determine their suitability for the DRE domain. We demonstrate CCMPerf by using it to collect metrics from a CCM implementation designed for DRE applications.

UML is useful for modeling object-oriented systems, their behavior and interaction. However, UML currently does not support the modeling of quality of service (QoS) criteria, such as the reliability and accuracy (i.e., quality). A QoS framework provides support to ensure consistency in modeling various qualities of service. It supports a general categorization of different kinds of QoS;including QoS that are fixed at design time as well as ones that are managed dynamically. And it supports the integration of different categories of QoS for the purpose of QoS modeling of system aspects. Frequently the behavior of a system component is functionally correct, but the result it generates is nevertheless unacceptable because the result does not meet some QoS criteria. One way to enhance the capability of the system to deliver results of acceptable quality is to use flexible components that adapt their behavior depending on the resources available and the QoS required.
