service oriented Programming - which combines distributed object computing, component Based and web-based concepts - has recently emerged as a promising approach to develop dynamic and heterogeneous service provision environments. Such systems are referenced in literature as service oriented Architectures. Classic strategies to address dependability in distributed object computing middleware may not be straightforwardly applied to service oriented Architectures (SOAs) for pervasive computing, since they operate in quite different contexts compared to traditional DOC middleware. In this paper focus is on dependability issues of SOAs. In particular we identify dependability requirements of such systems during their life cycle showing how these requirements may change depending on the time phase (discovery, lookup, setup, delivery). We also explore the suitability of Jini technology as an enabling infrastructure to improve availability and reliability, describing both the benefits and drawbacks of a Jini-based solution in the context of a case study application, namely PRINCEPS.

Quality and risk concerns currently, limit the application of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software components to non-critical applications. Software metrics can quantify factors contributing to the overall quality, of a component-based system, and models for tradeoffs between cost and various aspects of quality can guide quality and risk management by identifying and eliminating sources of risk. This paper discusses metrics and models that can be used to alleviate quality concerns for COTS-based systems, enabling the use of COTS components in a broader range of applications.

Dynamic reconfiguration provides of powerful mechanism to adapt component-based distributed applications to changing environmental conditions. We have designed and implemented a framework for dynamic component reconfiguration on the basis of the Microsoft. NET environment. Within this paper we present an experimental evaluation of our infrastructure for dynamic reconfiguration of component-based applications. Our framework supports the description of application configurations and profiles and allows for selection of a particular configuration and object/component instantiation based on measured environmental conditions. In response to changes in the environment, our framework will dynamically load new configurations, thus implementing dynamic reconfiguration of an application. Configuration code for components and applications has to interact with man), functional modules and therefore is often scattered around the whole application. We use aspect-oriented programming techniques to handle configuration aspects separately from functional code. The timing behavior of dynamic reconfiguration depends heavely on properties of the underlying programming environment and the operating system. We have studied to which extend and with which performance impact the Microsoft NET Platform supports dynamic reconfiguration. The paper thoroughly discusses our experimental results.

This paper describes the design of a real-time data dispatching system (RTDDS), which is motivated by the needs of a performance guarantee on real-time data services by front-end clients. RTDDS consists of homogeneous machines with a quality of service performance guarantee. We address the resource allocation problems and consider Bin-Packing algorithms to assign requests to machines of RTDDS. Processes scheduling over each machine is done autonomously by SRP-based algorithms. The goal is to maximize the number of concurrent clients and to meet the individual quality of service requirements of clients at the same time. © 2003 ieee.

In the new emerging communications infrastructures there is the desire and the demand to build applications with every increasing requirements in what concerns real-time and dependability. However the dynamic characteristics of those environments make it difficult, if even possible, to always offer the desired quality-of-service (QoS). It is thus important to have some support to handle QoS in such scenarios. In this paper based on the quasi-synchronous approach, we propose a set of group communication protocols with different QoS properties (timeliness, order agreement), that are built in a component based fashion. Depending on the characteristics of the environment, applications may choose the best QoS that is still possible to have at a give moment.

distributed system frameworks (also known as middlewares) are developed to wrap distributed components regard. less of their program languages, operating systems, and hardware platforms. Middleware hides networking details from application developers, and it increases reusability and reconfigurability of developed systems. CORBA (Common object Request Broker Architecture) is a standard middleware. We adapt CORBA for our multi-robot research since it hides all network program details from programmers. Thus, CORBA increases development efficiency and component reusability. Recently real-time CORBA (RT-CORBA) has been defined by object Management Group (OMG), and it supports many real-time properties. Using RT-CORBA, we can define and implement real-time applications with stringent end-to-end quality of service (QoS) requirements. In this research, we tested one of the RT-CORBA properties. We show our testing result of a propagated priority model to guarantee that a high priority client invocation can be processed before that of a low priority client.

A recent trend has seen the extension of object-oriented middleware to component-oriented middleware. A major advantage components offer over objects is that only the business logic of an application needs to be addressed by a programmer with support services required incorporated into the application at deployment time. This is achieved via components (business logic of an application), containers that host components and are responsible for providing the underlying middleware services required by components and application servers that host containers. Well-known examples of component middleware architectures are Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs) and the CORBA component Model (CCM). Two of the many services available at deployment time in most component architectures are component persistence and atomic transactions. This paper examines, using EJBs, how replication for availability can be supported by containers so that components that are transparently using persistence and transactions can also be made highly available. © 2003 ieee.

Although CORBA, as middleware, has emerged as a promising means of solving problems of heterogeneity (e.g. heterogeneous hardware, operating systems, programming languages, etc) in distributed environments. Undoubtedly, It makes applications more complex and bulky. Furthermore, failure only in CORBA component maybe will make the whole application system crashed. So it is suggested that the distributed application systems should avoid adopting numerous CORBA service as possible for higher reliability. In this paper, we present a novel design approach to resolve the problem of resource management with few CORBA services as possible. Without using CORBA load balance service, we have successfully implemented load balance in high performance, complex distributed real-time computing system.

UML is useful for modeling object-oriented systems, their behavior and interaction. However, UML currently does not support the modeling of quality of service (QoS) criteria, such as the reliability and accuracy (i.e., quality). A QoS framework provides support to ensure consistency in modeling various qualities of service. It supports a general categorization of different kinds of QoS; including QoS that are fixed at design time as well as ones that are managed dynamically. And it supports the integration of different categories of QoS for the purpose of QoS modeling of system aspects. Frequently the behavior of a system component is functionally correct, but the result it generates is nevertheless unacceptable because the result does not meet some QoS criteria. One way to enhance the capability of the system to deliver results of acceptable quality is to use flexible components that adapt their behavior depending on the resources available and the QoS required.
