New advances in software component and modeling standards promise to ease the burden of development complexity while improving flexibility and reliability. These solutions raise the level of abstraction from object-oriented classes to coarser components and support the creation and configuration of systems using modeling or other specification standards. This paper outlines the challenges inherent in the original Bold Stroke component model developed in the late 1990's and then discusses an evolved component model that leverages work being done in the object Management Group (OMG) and in government funded research that addresses these issues in a distributed real-time embedded (DRE) application context.

This paper describes the design of a real-time data dispatching system (RTDDS), which is motivated by the needs of a performance guarantee on real-time data services by front-end clients. RTDDS consists of homogeneous machines with a quality of service performance guarantee. We address the resource allocation problems and consider Bin-Packing algorithms to assign requests to machines of RTDDS. Processes scheduling over each machine is done autonomously by SRP-based algorithms. The goal is to maximize the number of concurrent clients and to meet the individual quality of service requirements of clients at the same time.

Recently mobile phones provide not only voice service but internet access, multi-media message services, games, local communication controller and so on. Therefore, more productive software platforms are required. We develop the next generation software platform based on Linux. In the paper, we describe a summary of the software platform. First, back grounds are mentioned, including recent and future functionalities in mobile phones. Then, we summarize requirements for mobile phone Linux. Third, we describe functionalities of middleware for the mobile phones on top of Linux. Lastly future trends in mobile phone software are presented.

Quality and risk concerns currently limit the application of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software components to non-critical applications. Software metrics can quantify factors contributing to the overall quality of a component-based system, and models for tradeoffs between cost and various aspects of quality can guide quality and risk management by identifying and eliminating sources of risk. This paper discusses metrics and models that can be used to alleviate quality concerns for COTS-based systems, enabling the use of COTS components in a broader range of applications.

Dynamic reconfiguration provides of powerful mechanism to adapt component-based distributed applications to changing environmental conditions. We have designed and implemented a framework for dynamic component reconfiguration on the basis of the Microsoft .NET environment. Within this paper we present an experimental evaluation of our infrastructure for dynamic reconfiguration of component-based applications. Our framework supports the description of application configurations and profiles and allows for selection of a particular configuration and object/component instantiation based on measured environmental conditions. In response to changes in the environment, our framework will dynamically load new configurations, thus implementing dynamic reconfiguration of an application. Configuration code for components and applications has to interact with many functional modules and therefore is often scattered around the whole application. We use aspect-oriented programming techniques to handle configuration aspects separately from functional code. The timing behavior of dynamic reconfiguration depends heavily on properties of the underlying programming environment and the operating system. We have studied to which extend and with which performance impact the Microsoft .NET Platform/sup 1/ supports dynamic reconfiguration. The paper thoroughly discusses our experimental results.

Many industrial real-time systems have evolved over a long period of time and were initially so simple that it was possible to predict consequences of adding new functionality by common sense. However as the system evolves the possibility to predict the consequences of changes becomes more and more difficult unless models and analysis method can be used. Moreover, traditional real-time models, e.g., fixed priority analysis, may be too simple for accurately capturing a complex system's characteristics. For instance, assuming worst-case execution time may not be realistic. Hence, analyses based on these models may give an overly pessimistic result. In this paper we describe our approach to introducing analyzability into complex real-time control systems. The proposed method is based on analytical models and discrete-event based simulation of the system behavior based on these models. The models describe execution times as statistical distributions which are measured and calculated in the existing system. Simulation will not only enable models with statistical execution times, but also correctness criterion other than meeting deadlines, e.g., nonempty communication queues. The simulation result is analyzed by specifying properties in a probabilistic property language. The result of such an analysis is either of probabilistic nature or boolean depending on how the property is specified. Having accurate system models enable analysis of the impact on the temporal behavior of e.g., customizing or maintaining the software.

A new class of applications can now be envisaged with the emergence of both mobile ad hoc computing and ubiquitous computing. Applications of such kind are characterised by being largely distributed and proactive, i.e. able to operate without human intervention. The anonymous and asynchronous paradigm, which is advocated by event models, has shown to be well-suited for this kind of applications. However, current real-time event-oriented middleware technologies do not provide a complete solution for the requirements of mobile ad hoc environments. In this paper, we present the research carried out on both a resource and a QoS management framework to achieve real-time support for an event system operating in mobile ad hoc environments. The framework makes use of both reflection and component technology. The implementation of our resource system is developed in OpenCOM, which is a lightweight, efficient and reflective model based on Microsoft’s COM.

distributed system frameworks (also known as middlewares) are developed to wrap distributed components regardless of their program languages, operating systems, and hardware platforms. Middleware hides networking details from application developers, and it increases reusability and reconfigurability of developed systems. CORBA (Common object Request Broker Architecture) is a standard middleware. We adapt CORBA for our multi-robot research since it hides all network program details from programmers. Thus, CORBA increases development efficiency and component reusability. Recently real-time CORBA (RT-CORBA) has been defined by object Management Group (OMG), and it supports many real-time properties. Using RT-CORBA, we can define and implement real-time applications with stringent end-to-end quality of service (QoS) requirements. In this research, we tested one of the RT-CORBA properties. We show our testing result of a propagated priority model to guarantee that a high priority client invocation can be processed before that of a low priority client.

This paper presents a component model for building distributed applications with fault-tolerance requirements. The AFT-CCM model selects the configuration of replicated services during execution time based on QoS requirements specified by the user. The configuration is managed using a set of components that deal with the non-functional aspects of the application. The characteristics of this model and the results obtained with its implementation are described along this paper.

Policy-based management can guide the behavior of a network or distributed system through high-level declarative directives that are dynamically introduced, checked for consistency, refined and evaluated, resulting typically in a series of low-level actions. We actually view policies as a means of extending the functionality of management systems dynamically, in conjunction with pre-existing "hard-wired" management logic. In this paper, we first discuss the policy management aspects of a resource management architecture for IP Differentiated services networks and we focus on the functionality of the network dimensioning component. We then present a detailed description of the design and implementation of the components of the policy management sub-system needed to be deployed in order to make our system policy-driven. Finally, we present examples of network dimensioning policies describing their transformation from their definition by the operator until their enforcement.
