The emerging distributed applications require end-to-end support for various quality-of-service (QoS) aspects, including bandwidth, latency, jitter, and dependability. The Common object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) is an open distributed object computing infrastructure, standardized by the object Management Group (OMG). Its goal is to minimize the effort required to develop high-quality systems by composing applications using reusable software components. However, CORBA is not sufficient to provide QoS guarantees in a distributed environment as it lacks capabilities to specify and enforce QoS constraints. For enforcing these constraints, OMG came up with real-time CORBA (RTCORBA) specification that can guarantee end-to-end predictability in a complex real-time system. Currently, RTCORBA specification addresses the location transparency, but does not address the resource monitoring and management issues critical for meeting the QoS constraints in a multi-server distributed processing environment. In this paper, we identify the functionalities that are required to ensure predictability in such an environment and propose a resource management framework for RTCORBA. We present its design, a prototype implementation using ORBit ORB, and an example to illustrate its use. © 2002 ieee.

The paper proposes an approach to solve the situation. In our approach, we have developed a middleware component to connect several middleware implementing these object-oriented standard specifications for home computing. Actually, our middleware component makes it possible to connect home appliances adopting HAVi, Jini, or UPnP. Therefore, various home appliances can communicate with each other.

Microsoft has introduced the .NET architecture as a new component-based programming environment, which allows for easy integration of classical distributed programming techniques with Web computing. NET defines a type system and introduces notions such as component, object, and interface, which are building blocks for distributed multi-language component-based applications. As many other component frameworks, .NET mainly focuses on functional interfaces of components. Non-functional aspects of components, such as resource usage (CPU, memory), timing behavior, fault-tolerance, or security requirements are currently not expressed in .NET's component interfaces. We discuss the usage of aspect-oriented programming techniques in context of the .NET framework. We focus on the fault-tolerance aspect and discuss the expression of non-functional component properties (aspects) as C# custom attributes. Our approach uses reflection to generate replicated objects based on settings of a special "fault-tolerance" attribute for C# components. We have implemented an aspect-weaver for integration of aspect-code and component-code, which uses the mechanisms of the language-neutral .NET type system. Therefore, our approach is not restricted to the C# language but works for any of the .NET programming languages.

This paper discusses the software architecture of a real-time CORBA object request broker (ORB), called ZEN, written in real-time Java, which is designed to eliminate common sources of overhead and non-determinism in ORB implementations. We illustrate how ZEN can be configured to select the minimal set of components used by an application. Our experience with ZEN indicates that combining real-time Java with real-time CORBA is a major step forward towards simplifying the development and maintenance of distributed middleware and applications with stringent quality of service requirements.

distributed object computing middleware such as CORBA, RMI, and DCOM have gained wide acceptance and has shielded programmers from many tedious and error-prone aspects of distributed programming. In particular, CORBA event service has been used extensively in embedded systems. We propose an aspect oriented approach to develop synchronization code for distributed systems that use event service as the underlying communication middleware. Our approach is to factor out synchronization as a separate aspect, synthesize synchronization code and then compose it with the functional code. We use high-level "global invariants" to specify the synchronization policies which are then automatically translated into synchronization code for the underlying event service. To implement synchronization efficiently using the event service, we propose enhancements to the semantics of the event service. Specifically, we define the notion of condition events and exactly k semantics. Given these enhancements, we describe a synthesis procedure to translate global invariants into synchronization code based on events. We describe the implementation of the enhancements on the Tao's real-time Event service. We present experimental results to demonstrate that the enhanced event service leads to more efficient implementation of synchronization. We feel that our methodology and the enhanced real-time Event service will lead to more confident use of sophisticated synchronization policies in distributed object oriented systems.

To reuse components in component-based real-time software development, especially the ones acquired from external sources, a component must satisfy its real-time constraints, such as thread priority and thread synchronization, to satisfy system real-time requirements. Since real-time applications have various real-time requirements, the ability to customize components for various real-time constraints is needed. Hence, the components to be used in real-time software development must have a set of well-defined features to facilitate component customization. Furthermore, since there are many techniques available for addressing real-time requirements, the features themselves must also be customizable to support these techniques used in a particular type of real-time applications. In this paper, an object-oriented component customization approach, including component customization and framework extension, for real-time applications software development, is presented.

Weapons System Open Architecture (WSOA) utilizes a distributed object computing foundation as a "bridge" to enable communication between disparate real-time systems in the redirection of strike assets. This open systems "bridge" connects legacy embedded mission systems and off-board C3I (command, control, communication and information) sources and systems. WSOA will establish the potential gains in warfighting capability due to the enabling technologies of collaborative planning, information mining, and adaptive embedded resource management. This paper focuses on the experiences and lessons learned in the WSOA demonstration program with CORBA middleware, pluggable protocols and Quality of service (QoS) enforcement, management and verification.

New applications introducing restrictions in power consumption, heat, costs and available space are leading to small microcontrollers becoming increasingly important in distributed real-time systems. Traditional real-time middleware architectures are insufficient for these small devices. The paper presents an ongoing approach of constructing middleware for small devices by adapting the microkernel concept from operating systems to middleware. This middleware called OSA+ is service oriented and consists of a small core, basic-, extension-, and user-services. The core provides only restricted functionality, while the basic and extension services adapt and scale the system according to the application environment. A first (quick and non-optimal) prototype implementation offers a core size of about 60 kBytes and an average size of about 10 kBytes for a basic service. We consider this as a basis for further optimizations leading to yet smaller sizes.

This paper examines the CORBA Naming, Event, Notification, Trading, time and Security services, with the objective of identifying the issues that must be addressed in order make these services fault-tolerant. The reliability considerations for each of these services involves strategies for replicating the service objects, and for keeping the states of the replicas consistent. Of particular interest are the sources of non-determinism in each of these services, along with the means for addressing the non-deterministic behavior in the interests of ensuring strong fault tolerance.

The demand for real-time database services has been increasing. Examples include sensor data fusion, stock trading, decision support, Web information services, and data-intensive smart spaces. In these systems, it is essential to execute transactions in time using fresh (temporally consistent) data. Due to the high service demand, many transactions may miss their deadlines regardless of their importance. To address the problem, we present a service differentiation architecture for real-time databases. Transactions are classified into several service classes based on their importance. Under conditions of overload, different degrees of deadline miss ratio guarantees are provided among the service classes according to their importance. A certain data freshness guarantee is also provided for the data accessed by timely transactions which finish within their deadlines. Feedback control is applied to support the miss ratio and freshness guarantees. In a simulation study, our service differentiation approach shows a significant performance improvement compared to the baseline approaches. The specified miss ratio and freshness are supported even in the presence of unpredictable workloads and data access patterns.
