A key challenge in keeping distributed clocks well synchronized in a LAN environment via OS-or middleware-level mechanisms is to create an interference-free condition in a network channel(s) and a nonpreemptible on-alert condition in the responsible thread in each node during each resynchronization round while keeping the length of each round as short as possible. An approach for meeting this challenge which is based on the middleware architecture TMOSM, has been presented. A prototype implementation and its measurements indicated that with a typical network of PCs connected via a 10 Mbps Ethernet, the PC nodes can be kept synchronized within the deviation bound of 0.5 milliseconds. The organizing principle is believed to be applicable to many real-time OSs or middleware used to support distributed computing applications.

Embedded real-time applications are often built from scratch on a trial-and-error basis, which leads to sub-optimal designs with latent errors that are not detectable in early stages of use or deployment and often incurs prolonged time-to-market. A new application framework called Verifiable Embedded real-time Application Framework (VERTAF) is proposed for embedded real-time application development, with the aim of reducing design errors and increasing design productivity. VERTAF is an integration of three technologies, namely object-oriented technology, software component technology, and formal verification technology. VERTAF consists of five software components: Implanter, Modeler, Scheduler, Verifier, and Generator. Experiences of using VERTAF show a significant increase in design productivity through design reuse, and a significant decrease in design time and effort through design verification. An example shows a relatively low design effort on the part of the designer using VERTAF.

Two limitations of the current implementations of adaptive QoS behaviors are complexity associated with inserting them into common application contexts and lack of reusability across applications. What is needed is a way of bundling all the specification for systemic behavior into one place, and making it feasible to insert the collection of related QoS management artifacts into applications as a single, reusable behavior. As a means of addressing these issues, we have developed a new abstraction intended specifically to bundle together the lower level abstractions, specifications and implementations associated with providing adaptive QoS behaviors in a manner which is both easier to package and makes the behavior bundle reusable in a variety of applications and styles of use. We introduce the concept of "qoskets" as reusable systemic behaviors, lay out elements of our design for qoskets within the QuO framework, and use a case study example to highlight the issues of using qoskets in practice.

Mobile devices, such as cellular phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and organizers, are becoming increasingly popular. Due to the high volatility of those devices, the achievable quality-of-service (QoS) for mobile services can hardly be predicted. Even for one particular type of device - say a PDA - the implementation of a mobile service may use different communication interfaces over time (i.e.; wireless LAN, IrDA). Within this paper we present a new approach towards configuration of component-based services for mobile systems. Starting from a XML-based configuration language, which defines a set of rules for component configuration depending on a number of environmental parameters, our approach allows for instantiation and configuration of components. In contrast to many other approaches targeting distributed multimedia-style application on PC-class computers, our framework focuses on the extension of distributed services onto mobile devices. As proof-of-concept scenario we have implemented a configurable distributed video surveillance application on the basis of the Microsoft distributed component object Model on Windows 2000 and on the Windows CE-based Pocket PC platform.

We propose a proxy-based framework that provides QoS support to mobile users. We describe the overall QoS architecture and implement a number of key QoS functions, including bandwidth allocation and synchronization. In this architecture, admission control is exercised to ensure the long-term availability of resources to mobile clients, where the resources include bandwidth for supporting the required presentation rates and buffer for synchronizing media streams. Bandwidth allocation is implemented in Linux traffic control using stochastic fairness queueing and token bucket filter disciplines to provide bandwidth guarantees for the multimedia connections. An adaptive synchronization technique is also implemented in the proxy to synchronize multiple streams originating from different sources before transmitting them to the clients for presentation. Finally, a number of quality adaptation strategies that accommodate the diverse requirements and capabilities of clients are described.

The rapid growth in the demand of embedded systems and the increased complexity of embedded software pose an urgent need for advanced embedded software development techniques. Software technology is shifting toward semi-automated code generation and integration of systems from components. component-based development (CBD) techniques can significantly reduce the time and cost for developing software systems. However, there are some difficult problems with the CBD approach. component identification and retrieval as well as component composition require extensive knowledge of the components. Designers need to go through a steep learning curve in order to effectively compose a system out of available components. We discuss an integrated mechanism for component-based development of embedded software. We develop an On-line Repository for Embedded Software (ORES) to facilitate component management and retrieval. ORES uses an ontology-based approach to facilitate repository browsing and effective search. Based on ORES, we develop the code template approach to facilitate semi-automated component composition. A code template can be instantiated by different sets of components and, thus, offers more flexibility and configurability and better reuse. Another important aspect in embedded software is the nonfunctional requirements and properties. In ORES, we capture nonfunctional properties of components and provide facilities for the analysis of overall system properties.

A composite multimedia object has specific timing relationships among the different types of component media. Coordinating the real-time presentation of information and maintaining time-ordered relations among the component media is vital for satisfying quality of service (QoS) requirements. This paper proposes a formal approach to modeling and analyzing temporal aspects of SMIL documents using the Software Architecture Model (SAM), which is based on a dual formalism combining Petri nets and temporal logic. Synchronization elements of SMIL are systematically modeled by Petri nets. Useful QoS properties of SMIL documents are specified using temporal logic formulas and verified by automatic tools. timelines of SMIL document presentation are analyzed using the reachability tree technique.

This paper compares interaction and communication mechanisms used in distributed control systems, focusing on object-oriented and component-based development. The standard communication model used in distributed object-oriented systems is the remote method invocation. We argue that this client/server oriented model has some severe drawbacks when used in a control system where objects may have to broadcast information, spontaneously communicate environmental changes and where control autonomy is a crucial requirement. Therefore, we compare the traditional way of object invocation with a port-based scheme and the model of event channels. An application scenario from. robot control is used to highlight similarities and differences among these mechanisms.

Even though introduced for solving the consensus problem in asynchronous distributed systems, the notion of unreliable failure detector can be used as a powerful tool for any distributed protocol in order to get better performance by allowing the usage of aggressive time-outs to detect failures of entities executing the protocol. In this paper we present the designing of a Failure Detection service (FDS) based on the notion of unreliable failure detectors introduced by Chandra and Toueg. FDS is able to detect crashed objects and entities that permanently omit to send messages without imposing changes to the source code of the underlying protocols that use this service. Also, FDS provides an object-oriented interface to its subscribers and, more important, it does not add network overhead if no entity subscribes to the service. This paper can be also seen as a first step towards a distributed implementation of a heartbeat-based failure management system as defined in Fault-Tolerant CORBA specification.
