QoS (defined as a proper set of quantitative characteristics) analysis is a necessary step for the early verification and validation of an appropriate design, and for taking design decisions about the most rewarding choice, in relation with user requirements. In this paper, we describe an analytical approach for the evaluation of the QoS offered by a family of group communication protocols in a wireless environment, and rise experimental data for feeding our models. Specific indicators have been defined and evaluated, which capture the main characteristics of the protocols and of the environment, focusing our attention on performance and dependability attributes. The defined models account for the correlation among successive packet transmissions due to fading and users mobility. The main purpose of our analysis is to provide a fast, cost effective, and formally sound way to further analyze and understand the protocol behavior and its environment.

distributed object applications can be made fault tolerance by replicating their constituent object, and by distributing these replicas across the different computers in the network. The idea behind object replication is that the failure of one replica of an object can be masked from a client of the object because the other replicas can continue to perform any operation that the client requires. In this paper, we propose IFTS(Intelligent Fault-Tolerant CORBA service) in handling faults of server object replica using replication concept to support fault tolerance. And it can choose the fastest primary, replica using multicast mechanism. And it also introduces passive replication for secure fault tolerance. Furthermore, we propose the design and implementation of IFTS service to provide reliability, and faster service using multicast technology by extending existing CORBA ORB.

The Common object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) is the most successful representative of an object-based distributed computing architecture. Although CORBA simplifies the implementation of complex, distributed systems significantly, the support of techniques for reliable, fault-tolerant, and secure software is very limited in the state-of-the-art CORBA. Extensions, such Lis the CORBAsec specification provide only a limited choice of coarse-grained mechanisms to specify access rights for components. Any, fault-tolerance or security extension for CORBA components needs to trade off data abstraction and encapsulation against implementation specific knowledge about a component's internal behavior, resource usage, interaction and access patterns. These non-functional aspects of a component are crucial for the predictable behavior of security and fault-tolerance mechanisms. However, in contrast to CORBA's interface definition language (IDL), which describes a component's functional interface, there is no general means to describe a component's non-functional properties, such as security settings or fault-tolerance. Within this paper we present our approach towards role-based security for CORBA. Following the idea of aspect-oriented programming, we have developed a description language for security settings. The description language uses the extended Markup Language (XML) as an underlying representation and allows specification of access rights independently from an object's implementation. A role-editor tool allows for configuration of a component's security settings without affecting the component's source code. Security settings are enforced ky our enhanced version of the ORBacus CORBA implementation. We discuss the necessary description and configuration steps for a secure CORBA service. Extending the CORBA programming and execution environments to support real-time distributed applications is a subject of growing interests to both research and industry community. The time-triggered message triggered object (TMO) programming scheme has been established to remove the severe limitations of conventional object structuring techniques in developing real-time distributed applications. To facilitate the construction of TMO-structured real-time distributed applications consisting of CORBA-compliant components, a middleware named TMO Execution Support (TMOES) has been created. TMOES instantiations residing in cooperating computing nodes also communicate among themselves only via ORBs conforming to the standard specifications. TMOES instantiations cooperate among themselves to support timely execution of TMO methods and interactions among remote TMOs. This paper presents the architecture and an implementation model of TMOES.

object and component technologies play an ever-increasing role in the development of real-time distributed applications. These systems are characterized by the fact that the temporal compatibility of the different objects that are brought together is a condition for success. In this paper, we propose an approach to validate the interoperability of object interfaces with respect to their temporal properties. This approach is based on a recent execution-time calculation technique dedicated to concurrent environments. In this article, we propose a simpler computation framework for this technique, based on Petri nets and J.Y. Girard's (1987, 1990, 1995) linear logic, and we show how it can quite advantageously be adapted to distributed real-time object-oriented systems.

There is a general trend in designing distributed control systems to give an increasing amount of autonomy to the individual nodes of such systems. Autonomous nodes interact only loosely. But also, close cooperation under hard real-time constraints is required in certain situations. This paper analyzes approaches for structuring distributed control systems and presents an architecture integrating object-oriented frameworks, publisher/subscriber communication, and hard- and soft-real-time communication. For supporting mobile robots. Wireless communication is considered in particular.

Even though introduced for solving the consensus problem in asynchronous distributed systems, the notion of unreliable failure detector can be used as a powerful tool for any distributed protocol in order to get better performance by allowing the usage of aggressive time-outs to detect failures of entities executing the protocol. We present the design of a Failure Detection service (FDS) based on the notion of unreliable failure detectors introduced by T. Chandra and S. Toueg (1996). FDS is able to detect crashed objects and entities that permanently omit to send messages without imposing changes to the source code of the underlying protocols that use this service. Also, FDS provides an object oriented interface to its subscribers and, more important, it does not add network overhead if no entity subscribes to the service. The paper can be also seen as a first step towards a distributed implementation of a heartbeat-based failure management system as defined in fault-tolerant CORBA specification.

This paper compares interaction and communication mechanisms used in distributed control systems, focusing on object-oriented and component-based development. The standard communication model used in distributed object oriented systems is remote method invocation. We argue that this client/server oriented model has some severe drawbacks when used in a control system where objects may have to broadcast information, spontaneously communicate environmental changes and where control autonomy is a crucial requirement. Therefore, we compare the traditional way of object invocation with a port-based scheme and the model of event channels. An application scenario from robot control is used to highlight similarities and differences among these mechanisms.

Activity diagrams are a recognized form of modelling real time systems and have been included in the list of UML techniques for modelling the dynamic aspects of object oriented systems. In this paper, we explain how workflow techniques can be used for developing models of larger chunks of systems. These chunks are expressed through the use of worklets. This can then be used as the basis of modelling systems where timeliness is of importance. However, this requires extending workflow ideas to incorporate flexibility, handling of exceptions and adaptability. Extensions of the activity diagrams are then proposed for expressing the models obtained from such workflow techniques. This will allow evolution of real time systems development towards a component based approach.
