As the demands for real time distributed systems increase, the need for programming tools useful in development of such application systems is becoming increasingly acute. An issue that the research community has long recognized as an important technological challenge but has not shown much progress in meeting the challenge is to guarantee response times of real time distributed systems. Two basic problems must be solved to effectively meet this challenge: (1) to establish the distributed real time program structure and the system infrastructure structure, i.e., the structure of the operating system (OS) and the communication infrastructure, that enable systematic analysis of the worst case time behavior of the application systems;and (2) to establish a tool which performs automated analysis of the worst case time behavior while leaving only minimal work to the designers. The problem area (1) has been recognized as a research area for a long time, but only in recent years has the skeleton of a usable technical foundation started emerging. In other words, there has long been a lack of fully general and yet easily analyzable distributed real time program structures and also a lack of useful OS timing models. However, on the basis of the skeleton emerged, rapid progress is expected in the future toward establishment of a full technical foundation. Therefore, the time seems ripe for launching new larger scale attacks on problem (2) on the basis of those recent developments in handling problem (1). © 2000 ieee.

Today's virtual environments are expected to be distributed to allow collaboration for common purposes. However, they must ensure a high level of quality of service (QoS) to the user, especially in an open context with unknown, a priori, man-in-the-loop event occurrence. This paper presents our distributed Virtual Environment COllaboration Model (DVECOM) and its implementation which aims to provide an end-user QoS support for distributed virtual reality applications. The idea of DVECOM is to guarantee full consistency and soft synchronization of the virtual world distributed displays, with the least rendering degradation possible, and also to auto-adapt the rendering in accordance with the retained strategy, ensuring best effort and least suffering for virtual world rendering. This representation degradation is driven by the users' choices. The receiver-side protocol is based upon the end-user preferences, physical level capability information, as well as the pertinence of the notification to each client (contextual end-user information). When available, such guarantees would make it possible to use DVE out of a closed, oversized, very restricted context for industrial collaborative applications with an expected QoS. © 2000 ieee.

To apply the component-based approach to distributed real-time software development, it is necessary to identify components based on both functional and real-time requirements. Since a component may be acquired from external sources, it becomes necessary during integration to ensure that a component satisfies the real-time requirements of the target application software. Since these requirements vary, customizable so that during integration it can adapt itself to the specific real-time requirements of the target-distributed software. To facilitate such activities, it is preferable to have components that are capable of performing self-customization using a set of built-in services. In this paper, an object-oriented real-time component framework and two built-in customization services are presented to address the specified issues.

We describe a component for supporting quality of service (QoS) in object environments. This component, called the micro QoS manager (/spl mu/QoS-Mngr), is associated to an application and handles all aspects of static and dynamic QoS management related to that application. End to end QoS management is provided through the cooperation of the /spl mu/QoS-Mngr with a set of object resource managers (OR-Mngr) each of which is responsible for the QoS management of a specific resource, including, admission control, real-time scheduling and monitoring functionalities. QoS renegotiation is achieved through application process monitoring and communication, with the OR-Mngr. We focus on the micro QoS manager and give an overview of its implementation in a CORBA platform in the context of a video on demand application.

We describe a real-time component-based system for an inspection application. We chose the inspection application and the accompanying task (or scenario) so that we might fully exercise and test our theories about real-time complex systems, system architectures, design methodologies, and software tools. We describe the application, give a history and description of our system architecture and design methodology, describe the real-time software tools we used, and conclude with a discussion of real-time and object-oriented challenges solved.

Deadline handling is a fundamental part of real-time computing but has been practiced in ad hoc forms for decades. A general framework for systematic deadline handling in real-time distributed computer systems is proposed in this paper. The notions of hard deadlines and hard-real-time program components are discussed along with the advantages of a hard-real-time component based construction approach. To present approaches for implementation of systematic deadline handling in concrete forms, we use the time-triggered message triggered object (TMO) network structuring as the basic design framework in which deadline handling approaches are incorporated. The TMO structuring scheme is a general-style component structuring scheme and supports design of all types of components including hard-real-time objects and non-real-time objects within one general structure. An augmentation of the TMO structure with statistical performance indicators is also proposed.

Proposes a distributed computing framework for the real-time management of a large number of robots in an industrial setting. The primary design objective of this framework is to allow a centralized heterogeneous multiprocessor controller to perform real-time scheduling and evaluation of Newton-Euler equations for manipulating the robot motion. The real-time scheduling of tasks in such an environment is shown to be an NP-hard problem, for which we propose a deadline-based heuristic. A detailed simulation reveals that the proposed heuristic can achieve near-optimal performance.

Recent work in opening up distributed object systems to make them suitable for applications needing quality of service control has had the side effect of increasing the complexity in setting up, configuring, and initializing such applications. Configuration of distributed applications is more complicated than that of non-distributed applications, simply because of the heterogeneous and distributed nature of the application's components. CORBA and other distributed object middleware simplifies the configuration of distributed object applications, but hides much of the information and control necessary to achieve quality of service (QoS). We describe the techniques and tools that we have developed within our Quality objects (QuO) framework for simplifying the configuration of distributed applications with QoS attributes. We describe a QuO configuration language, as well as the specific configuration needs of particular QoS properties-real-time, security, and dependability-and the support we provide for them.

The decomposition of large systems into parts is a general principle of software design. Even more, in the scope of distributed systems, a partition of the whole system into distributable components is necessary. Decisions about what constitutes a component of a system are usually either based on the behavior or on the structure of the system. Nevertheless, there is a strong mutual influence between both kinds of decomposition. Despite the importance of structural and behavioral decomposition, many modeling notations and languages define the semantics of these concepts rather vaguely, and this may lead to incorrect implementation. This paper presents the new structuring mechanisms in the object-oriented specification and description language SDL-2000. The paper also gives a critical evaluation of these concepts and a comparison with similar approaches in UML (Unified Modeling Language) and ROOM (real-time object-oriented Modeling).
