Today's virtual environments are expected to be distributed to allow collaboration for common purposes. However, they must ensure a high level of quality of service (QoS) to the user, especially in an open context with unknown, a priori, man-in-the-loop event occurrence. This paper presents our distributed Virtual Environment COllaboration Model (DVECOM) and its implementation which aims to provide an end-user QoS support for distributed virtual reality applications. The idea of DVECOM is to guarantee full consistency and soft synchronization of the virtual world distributed displays, with the least rendering degradation possible, and also to auto-adapt the rendering in accordance with the retained strategy, ensuring best effort and least suffering for virtual world rendering. This representation degradation is driven by the users' choices. The receiver-side protocol is based upon the end-user preferences, physical level capability information, as well as the pertinence of the notification to each client (contextual end-user information). When available, such guarantees would make it possible to use DVE out of a closed, oversized, very restricted context for industrial collaborative applications with an expected QoS.

To support multimedia applications in mobile environments, it is necessary for applications to be aware of the underlying environmental conditions, and also to be able to adapt their behaviour and that of the underlying platform as such conditions change. Many existing distributed systems platforms support such adaptation only in a rather ad-hoc manner. This paper presents a principled approach to supporting adaptation through the use of reflection. More specifically, the paper introduces a language-independent, component-based reflective architecture featuring a per-component meta-space, the use of meta-models to structure the meta-space, and a consistent use of component graphs to represent composite components. The paper also reports on a quality-of-service management framework, providing sophisticated support for monitoring and adaptation functions. Finally, the paper describes a prototype implementation of this architecture using the object-oriented programming language Python.

Sense: A service Navigation System is an agent system supporting interaction between the end user (consumer) and service provider (producer) in an open, distributed object environment. It navigates among the latest multimedia network services based on the end user's wishes, profile and situations. Its service navigation strategy is a key feature of Sense; it navigates based not merely on pre-registered user information, but taking into consideration the history of service selection by the user, advertising information from the service provider and other clues. Moreover, Sense makes use of object services available in the open distributed processing environment, such as traders and service type repositories, enabling it to take the initiative in proposing the latest multimedia network services.

As networks and the use of communications within applications continue to grow and find more uses, so too does the demand for more control and manageability of various "system properties" through middleware. An important component supporting an integrated property architecture is the concept of an object gateway, which is a quality-of-service (QoS)-aware element transparently inserted at the transport layer between clients and objects to provide managed communication behavior for the particular property being supported. In this paper, we introduce the concept of a QoS-oriented gateway to integrate a variety of QoS enforcement and implementation mechanisms controlling the underlying distributed interactions. We discuss the functions performed by such a component in achieving the desired overall end-to-end QoS, and the design considerations underlying our current implementation. We conclude with experiences to date with two variations of the gateway: one controlling managed latency and throughput using bandwidth allocation, and one controlling dependability through the coordination of object replicas.

This paper deals with large, distributed real-time systems that have execution times and resource utilizations which cannot be characterized a priori. (The motivation for our work is provided in part by the characteristics of combat systems.) There are several implications of these characteristics: 1) demand space workload characterizations may need to be determined a posteriori, and 2) an adaptive approach to resource allocation may be necessary to accommodate dynamic workload changes. Thus, we present a scheme for dynamically managing distributed computing resources by continuously computing and assessing QoS and resource utilization metrics that are determined a posteriori. Specifically, the paper presents an adaptive distributed system reference architecture that is suitable for such an approach. This reference architecture provides the capabilities and infrastructure needed to construct multi-component, replicated, distributed object real-time systems that negotiate for a given level of QoS from the underlying distributed computing resources. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

A multimedia object supports methods to manipulate the multimedia data in the object. A method changes not only the state of the object but also the QoS (quality of service) of the state. We discuss new equivalent and compatible relations among methods with respect to QoS. By using the relations, we discuss a QoS-based compensation method to undo the computation. We also discuss a locking scheme for objects.

A real time system must produce the intended results at the intended points of real time determined by its environment, otherwise the system has failed (H. Kopetz, 1997). For the purpose of this discussion, we consider two types of environments that contain real time computer systems: (i) static environments, where the frequency of the service requests on the computer system are constrained by a priori known environmental characteristics; (ii) dynamic environments, where it is possible to specify peak-load-service-request rates probabilistically only, e.g., a military command and control system that has to adapt dynamically to the n priori unknown threats of the enemy. We feel that these two fundamentally different environments of distributed real time computer systems demand different system models and different implementation strategies.

Technology advances in digital imaging modalities and high speed network have enabled physicians to store digital medical images and integrate them with a patient's text information for fast access by computer. The Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) is an archival system for digital medical images. It can deliver images to a physician through user friendly interfaces for interpretation, diagnosis and study. While these technology advances support a large-scale filmless environment in radiology departments, they do not adequately support workflow management. Thus they have very limited use for streamline, automated, and monitoring processes. The paper presents the characteristics and system requirements of an Image Workflow Management System (IWFMS) in a large-scale consortium of hospitals. The paper outlines a run-time object oriented architecture for the implementation of IWFMS. This system is general purpose, open and consists of three layers: coordination, service and tasks. The components in each layer have been designed and implemented as a set of CORBA services that provides seamless integration of flexible high level CORBA distributed object computing middleware with low level image data management. © 1999 ieee.

component based software development is a promising way to improve quality, time to market and handle the increasing complexity of software for real time systems. The basic properties of an event triggered component model for real time software are introduced. For the early exposure of design errors, a process for the simulation based validation of component based software applying use cases is presented. A template for structuring use cases helps gathering the course oriented requirements which describe the required behaviour of the composed software. Requirements sequence diagrams are extracted from the use cases and compared with the simulated behaviour of the component based software. A case study of a power window control from the automotive body electronics domain demonstrates practical experience with applying use cases for the requirements validation.

The paper describes the tools and techniques being applied in the TINA Open service Creation Architecture (TOSCA) project to develop object oriented models of distributed telecommunication services in SDL. The paper also describes the way in which Tree and Tabular Combined Notation (TTCN) test cases are derived from these models and subsequently executed against the CORBA based implementations of these services through a TTCN/CORBA gateway.
