One of the main objectives of Content-based Multimedia Retrieval systems is the automation of the information extraction process from raw data. When dealing with video data, the first step is to perform a temporal video segmentation in order to make a shot decomposition of the video content. From a computational point of view, this is a very high demanding task and algorithm optimization must be seeked. This paper presents a comparison between two different parallel programming paradigms: shared-memory communication and distributed memory processing using the message passing paradigm. Taking into account the software solutions, experimental results are collected over two alternative parallel architectures: a shared-memory symmetric multiprocessor and a cluster. This paper analyzes the performance achieved from the viewpoints of speed and scalability.

Integrating autonomous enterprise systems allows the cooperation among applications belonging to distinct systems. As an example, this problem shows up when integrating software services of large departments and organizations in e-Government initiatives. This paper studies, in the context of the Unitary Network of the Italian Public Administration, the problem of increasing the availability of services exported by an autonomous enterprise system towards others. In particular we show how a fault tolerant CORBA system, namely the Interoperable Replication Logic (IRL), can be used to increase such an availability by building a replicated cooperative gateway that wraps enterprise applications.

In this paper we present a,scalable and reconfigureable mesh array of programmable processing elements. It has been designed to implement multi-standard channel estimation and equalization algorithms for broadcast digital television applications. It particularly introduces the concept of a superimposed array to speed-up the execution of an adaptive filter. This paper also discusses the array configuration and programming tools. The flexibility of this solution is demonstrated, as it simultaneously addresses the mono carrier adaptive equalizer [1] for cable transmission, as well as multi-carrier channel estimation and correction for terrestrial transmission. Gate-level synthesis results have shown that this flexibility is obtained at acceptable cost.

Pioneering developments in electrical engineering are based on inspirations from biology. They exhibit naturally an efficient information processing. For example, hardware realizations of memristive circuits mimicking the anticipatory behavior of unicellular organisms like amoebas have been developed in this context. Unfortunately, circuits are not appropriate for algorithms dedicated in the area of digital signal processing. We intended to get an algorithmic model of the anticipation circuit for utilizations in digital signal processingapplications. In our approach we have applied the wave digital method to get a digital replica of the analog circuit. This offers several benefits, like the ability for preserving the passivity of the analog counterpart, the possibility for a parallelprocessing approach, efficiency, and robustness of the resulting algorithmic model. The memristive device of the original circuit has been replaced by a novel multilevel memristor model with suitable features for anticipation of digital patterns. The resulting algorithmic model offers innovative applications in e.g. robotics or artificial neural networks.

The majority of present clustering algorithms are designed to work in a sequential manner processing offline data on a single machine. Different approaches were considered for parallelizing the existing clustering algorithms to run in a parallel manner for increasing the size of the dataset that can be processed by a computational system. This paper suggests an extended architecture of the BigTim platform such that to be capable of running clustering algorithms in a distributed manner on mobile devices. The paper presents an enhanced version of the BigTim platform, which will run clustering algorithms on a cluster of devices composed by mobile devices (mobile phones and tablets) and computers connected through a network and working together in a MapReduce manner.
