Security is an essential factor in wireless sensor networks especially for E-health applications. One of the common mechanisms to satisfy the security requirements is cryptography. Among the cryptographic methods, elliptic curve cryptography is well-known, as by having a small key length it provides the same security level in comparison with the other public key cryptosystems. The small key sizes make ECC very interesting for devices with limited processing power or memory such as wearable devices for E-health applications. It is vitally important that elliptic curves are protected against all kinds of attacks concerning the security of elliptic curve cryptography. Selection of a secure elliptic curve is a mathematically difficult problem. In this paper, an efficient elliptic curve selection framework, called SEECC, is proposed to select a secure and efficient curve front all the available elliptic curves. This method enhances the security and efficiency of elliptic curve cryptosystems by using a parallel genetic algorithm.

The high-performance switches used in the interconnection networks of HPC systems have evolved in the last years incorporating new features that were proposed decades ago as theoretical concepts but were then unfeasible due to technological constraints. One of these features are the Virtual Output Queues (VOQs) which can be included in current switch architectures. This approach consists in implementing at each input port as many queues as there are output ports in order to eliminate low-order Head-of-Line blocking. Besides VOQs, Virtual Channels (VCs) are usually implemented in current switch architectures. Both features can be jointly configured to improve switch performance. For that reason, new techniques and proposals exploit their advantages while they solve their drawbacks. Usually, the earliest evaluations of these new improvements are performed using network simulators. These tools allow network designers and manufactures to save time in the testing and development of new components. This paper focuses on the modeling of a switch architecture with VOQs and VCs and its implementation in HPC-systems simulators. We describe the basics of the pipelined switch architecture assumed for the model, i.e., the stages and operations applied to packets crossing it. We also detail the modeling of VOQs through several pseudo-code algorithms, ready to be adapted to any network simulator. Finally, we use an OMNeT++-based simulator for implementing and evaluating the model by means of several topologies, traffic scenarios and buffer organizations.

Modern computer systems typically conbine multicore CPUs with accelerators like GPUs for inproved performance and energy efficiency. However, these systems suffer from poor performance portability - code tuned for one device must be retuned to achieve high performance on another. Image processing is increasing in importance, with applications ranging from seismology and medicine to Photoshop. Based on our experience with medical image processing, we propose ImageCL, a high-level domain-specific language and source-to-source compiler, targeting heterogeneous hardware. ImageCL resembles OpenCL, but abstracts away performance optimization details, allowing the programmer to focus on algorithm development, rather than performance tuning. The latter is left to our source-to-source compiler and auto-tuner. From high-level ImageCL kernels, our source-to-source compiler can generate multiple OpenCL implementations with different optimizations applied. We rely on auto-tuning rather than machine models or expert programmer knowledge to determine which optimizations to apply, making our tuning procedure highly robust. Furthermore, we can generate high performing implementations for different devices from a single source code, thereby improving performance portability. We evaluate our approach on three image processing benchmarks, on different GPU and CPU devices, and are able to outperform other state of the art solutions in several cases, achieving speedups of up to 4.57x.

With the increasing acceptance of multiple authentication mechanisms, federated infrastructures need to provide means of keeping consistency between multiple user identities. Although the current authentication and authorization infrastructures are designed to support multiple ways of authentication (SAML, OpenID Connect, X.509), they are missing unified protocols and interfaces to harmonize multiple user identities. This article introduces the concept of identity harmonization for federated cloud services. Our approach is based on the standardized System for Cross-domain Identity Management (SCIM) protocol. We add the support for account linking and per-service verification. Furthermore, the concept is put into context of currently existing federated infrastructures and is exemplified within a federated e-infrastructure currently developed in the course of the INDIGO-Datacloud project. The concept is evaluated in the INDIGO testbed in terms of deployability, scalability, provisioning and deprovisioning of user accounts, as well as maintenance and integration effort.

Scientific data analyses often apply a pipelined sequence of computational tasks to independent datasets. Each task in the pipeline captures and processes a dataset element, may be dependent on other tasks in the pipeline, may have a different computational complexity and may be filtered out from progressing in the pipeline. The goal of this work is to develop an efficient scheduler that automatically (i) manages a parallel data reading and an adequate data structure creation, (ii) adaptively defines the most efficient order of pipeline execution of the tasks, considering their inter-dependence and both the filtering out rate and the computational weight, and (iii) manages the parallel execution of the computational tasks in a multicore system, applied to the same or to different dataset elements. A real case study data analysis application from High Energy Physics (HEP) was used to validate the efficiency of this scheduler. Preliminary results show an impressive performance improvement of the pipeline tuning when compared to the original sequential HEP code (up to a 35x speedup in a dual 12-core system), and also show significant performance speedups over conventional parallelization approaches of this case study application (up to 10x faster in the same system).

High Performance computing (HPC) over mobile devices has emerged as a key area of research interest owing to the need for high computing capabilities even when users are on the move. Cellular device technology has evolved to the point where powerful computing features such as high performance processors and large flash memory are available at relatively low cost. However, to use such devices for performing HPC tasks or as interfaces to access remotely existing HPC facilities, several challenges must be addressed. Some of these include development of light-weight applications for the mobile environment, optimization of power consumption, need for high performance and fault-tolerant networks, etc. Such applications also require stringent Quality of Service (QoS) communication and hence a large amount of network resources. In this paper we propose a framework for provisioning high QoS for supporting HPC services and applications over existing wireless mobile networks. In addition we briefly discuss how proper charging and resource allocation can be used to balance resource consumption and the QoS provided.

We present an accurate online scalability prediction model for data-parallel programs on NUMA many-core systems. Memory contention is considered to be the major limiting factor of program scalability as data parallelism limits the amount of synchronization or data dependencies between parallel work units. Reflecting the architecture of NUMA systems, contention is modeled at the last-level caches of the compute nodes and the memory nodes using a two level queuing model to estimate the mean service time of the individual memory nodes. Scalability predictions for individual or co-located parallel applications are based solely on data obtained during a short sampling period at runtime;this allows the presented model to be employed in a variety of scenarios. The proposed model has been implemented into an open-source OpenCL and the GNU OpenMP runtime and evaluated on a 64-core AMD system. For a wide variety of parallel workloads and configurations, the evaluations show that the model is able to predict the scalability of data-parallel kernels with high accuracy.

Cloud computing has enabled elastic and on-demand service provisioning to achieve more efficient resource utilisation and quicker responses to varying application loads. Virtual machines, the building blocks of clouds, can be created using provider specific templates stored in proprietary repositories, which may lead to provider lock-in and decreased portability. Despite these enabling technologies, large scale service oriented applications are still mostly inelastic. Such applications often use monolithic services that limit the elasticity (e.g., by obstructing the replicability of parts of a monolithic service). Decomposing these services (leading to smaller, more targeted and more modular services) would open towards elasticity, but the decomposition process is mostly manual. This paper introduces a methodology for decomposing monolithic services to several so called microservices. The proposed methodology applies several outcomes of the ENTICE project (namely its image synthesis and optimisation tools). Finally, the paper provides insights on how these outcomes help revitalise past monolithic services, and what techniques are applied to aid future microservice developers.

This paper preliminarily discusses how to develop software towards exascale computing. Two typical development models are studied, one is "all-round contract" which means all the functional modules are implemented in a single framework, and the other is "co-design" which using the existing packages to realize functional modules. As a widely used CFD software whose numerical solving module is implemented in a typical "all-round contract" manner, OpenFOAM is concerned in this work. After redesigning and reimplementing the solving module of OpenFOAM in a "co-design" way by inserting PETSc, the source lines of the code decrease dramatically, which improves the development efficiency. Tests of two CFD benchmark cases and a practical large-scale case on a 128-node cluster show that the newly implemented numerical module also has a higher solving efficiency, compared with the original numerical module in OpenFOAM. Therefore, it is recommended to develop software in a "co-design" manner towards exascale computing, and softwares already implemented in "all-round contract" way should also be reconsidered.
