Energy management is becoming an increasingly important problem in application domains ranging from embedded devices to data centers. In many such systems, multi-core processors are projected as a promising technology to achieve improved performance with a lower power envelope. Managing the application power consumption under timing constraints poses significant challenges in these emerging platforms. In this paper, we study the energy-efficient scheduling of periodic realtime tasks with implicit deadlines on chip multi-core processors (CMPs). We specifically consider processors with a single voltage and clock frequency domain, such as the state-of-the-art embedded multi-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and enterprise-class processors such as Intel's Itanium 2, i5, i7 and IBM's Power 6 and Power 7 series. The major contributions of this work are (i) we prove that Worst-Fit-Decreasing (WFD) task partitioning when Rate-Monotonic Scheduling (RMS) is used has an approximation ratio of 1.71 for the problem of minimizing the schedulable operating frequency with partitioned fixed-priority scheduling, (ii) we illustrate the major shortcoming of WFD with RMS resulting from not considering task periods during allocation, and (iii) we propose a Single-clock domain multi-processor Frequency Assignment Algorithm (SFAA) that determines a globally energy-efficient frequency while including task period relationships. Our evaluation results show that SFAA provides significant energy gains when compared to WFD. In fact SFAA is shown to save up to 55% more power compared to WFD for an octa-core processor.

While recent embedded systems start to own more and more functionalities, security requirements become more and more important. In this paper we propose an approach to enhance the security of embedded systems. In this approach SPUMONE, a thin virtualization layer, is selected to build a multi-OS environment for its low overhead. Xv6 runs as trusted OS for executing the monitoring service that detects the violation of the integrity of the Linux kernel while Linux as a general purpose OS. The monitoring service checks whether Linux is compromised or not. A secure pager that offers the spatial isolation based on the core-local memory is proposed to protect the integrity of the xv6 kernel located in the main memory, which can make Linux and xv6 run in high security level.

In this paper, we propose a virtualization architecture for the multi-core embedded system to provide more system reliability and security while maintaining the same performance without introducing additional special hardware supports or having to implement complex protection mechanism in the virtualization layer. Embedded virtualization design usually uses two kinds of approaches, traditional VMM and microkernel approaches, but both of them suffer from performance or engineering cost problems. To achieve better reliability and keep the virtualization layer design lightweighted, a common hardware component called local memory adopted in the multi-core embedded processors is used in this work. By taking this memory architecture's advantage, we can mitigate above-mentioned problems at once. We choose to re-map the virtualization layer's program called SPUMONE, which it runs all its guest systems in kernel space, on the local memory. By doing so, it can provide additional reliability and security for the entire system because the SPUMONE's design in a multi-core platform has each instance being installed on a separated processor core, which is different from the traditional virtualization layer design, and therefore the content of each SPUMONE in the local memory is inaccessible to each others.

multi-core processors are becoming the dominant choice due to energy and thermal considerations, which also applies to embedded and real-time systems. While fixed-priority scheduling with task-splitting in real-time systems are widely applied, current approaches have not taken into consideration energy-aware aspects such as dynamic voltage/frequency scheduling (DVS). In this paper, we propose two strategies to apply DVS to fixed-priority scheduling algorithms with task-splitting for periodic real-time tasks on multi-core processors. We first propose a strategy that does traditional DVS for each processor after scheduling (post-DVS), which ensures all tasks meet the timing requirements on synchronization. We then propose a new strategy, which determines the frequency of each task before scheduling (pre-DVS) according to the total utilization of task-set and number of cores available, so that the system could take full advantage of all the cores. The combination of frequency pre-allocation and task-splitting makes it possible to maximize energy savings with DVS. We perform a series of simulations to compare the performance of each algorithm with two state-of-the-art scheduling algorithms with task-splitting. Simulation results show that the pre-DVS algorithm we proposed has performed satisfactorily on both schedulability and energy consumption in comparison to the previous approaches.

In this work we use the Fourier expansion to characterize and model many-core processor workloads for the purpose of computing accurate predictions of individual core thermal statuses. We demonstrate, that even if the workload is modeled with only a few components of its Fourier expansion, not only we obtain improved accuracy of aggregate performance measures like throughput or power consumption, but also we obtain highly accurate thermal profiles of individual cores. In this work we present the measurement and simulation results and accuracy analysis of our proposed approach. Our experiments show that assuming average activity of threads in a multi-threaded workload run on a many-core processor may lead to as much as 25% error in the estimation of the overall throughput of the system, and even larger discrepancies in the estimates of individual core's temperature traces, while applying even a few-component Fourier expansion of the benchmark traces reduce these errors by large margins. © 2011 CMP.

OP2 is an "active" library framework for the development and solution of unstructured mesh based applications. It aims to decouple the scientific specification of an application from its parallel implementation to achieve code longevity and near-optimal performance through re-targeting the back- end to different multi-core/many-core hardware. This paper presents a summary of a predictive performance analysis and benchmarking study of OP2 on heterogeneous cluster systems. In this work, an industrial representative CFD application written using the OP2 framework is benchmarked during the solution of an unstructured mesh of 1.5M and 26Medges. Benchmark systems include a large-scale CrayXE6 system and an Intel Westmere/InfiniBand cluster. Performance modeling is then used to predict the application's performance on an NVIDIA Tesla C2070 based GPU cluster, enabling the comparison of OP2's performance capabilities on emerging distributed memory heterogeneous systems. Results illustrate the performance benefits that can be gained through many-core solutions both on single-node and heterogeneous configurations in comparison to traditional homogeneous cluster systems for this class of applications.

multi-core processor architectures have become ubiquitous in today's computing platforms, especially in parallel computing installations, with their power and cost advantages. While the technology trend continues towards having hundreds of cores on a chip in the foreseeable future, an urgent question posed to system designers as well as application users is whether applications can receive sufficient support on today's operating systems for them to scale to many cores. To this end, people need to understand the strengths and weaknesses on their support on scalability and to identify major bottlenecks limiting the scalability, if any. As open-source operating systems are of particular interests in the research and industry communities, in this paper we choose three operating systems (Linux, Solaris and FreeBSD) to systematically evaluate and compare their scalability by using a set of highly-focused microbenchmarks for broad and detailed understanding their scalability on an AMD 32-core system. We use system profiling tools and analyze kernel source codes to find out the root cause of each observed scalability bottleneck. Our results reveal that there is no single operating system among the three standing out on all system aspects, though some system(s) can prevail on some of the system aspects. For example, Linux outperforms Solaris and FreeBSD significantly for file-descriptor- and process-intensive operations. For applications with intensive sockets creation and deletion operations, Solaris leads FreeBSD, which scales better than Linux. With the help of performance tools and source code instrumentation and analysis, we find that synchronization primitives protecting shared data structures in the kernels are the major bottleneck limiting system scalability. Recently there has been a lot of interest in coexisting of multiple independently-developed real-time applications on a shared open platform. On the other hand, emerging of multi-core platforms and the performance and possibilities they offer has attracted a lot of attention in multiprocessor real-time analysis, protocols and techniques. Co-executing independently-developedreal-time applications on a shared multiprocessor system, where each application executes on a dedicated sub set of processors, requires to overcome the problem of handling mutually exclusive shared resources among those applications. To handle resource sharing, it is important to determine the Resource Hold Time (RHT), i.e., the maximum duration of time that an application locks a shared resource. In this paper, we study resource hold times under multiprocessor static-priority global scheduling. We present how to compute RHT's for each resource in an application. We also show how to decrease the RHT's without compromising the schedulability of the application. We show that decreasing all RHT's for all shared resources is a multiobjective optimization problem and there can exist multiple Pareto-optimal solutions.
