multi-core processing is a growing industry trend as single core processors rapidly reach the physical limits of possible complexity and speed. A multi-core processor is an integrated circuit in which two or more processors have been attached for enhanced performance, reduced power consumption, and more efficient simultaneous processing of multiple tasks (i.e., parallel processing). Using today's standard, a dual-core setup, for example, is somewhat comparable to having two separate processors installed in the same computer, but because the two processors are actually plugged into the same socket, the connection between them is faster. With this recent emergence, many commercial systems have increased the prevalence of multi-core architectures. In the near future, multi-core platforms can have hundreds or even thousands of computingcores that are tightly integrated for parallel processing. multi-core technology is revolutionizing the development of concurrent and computational intensive applications deemed impossible in the recent past. This paper presents an extensive survey of popular multi-core programming tools and provides a classification and comparison for better understanding this technology.
