Research done during the last three years has studied the emersion properties of Complex Adaptive systems (CAS). The deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques applied to remote Unmanned Aerial Vehicles has led the author to investigate applications of CAS within the field of Autonomous multi-Agent systems. The core objective of current research efforts is focused on the simplicity of Intelligent Agents (IA) and the modeling of these agents within complex systems. This research effort looks at the communication, interaction, and adaptability of multi-agents as applied to complex systems control. The embodiment concept applied to robotics has application possibilities within multi-agent frameworks. A new framework for agent awareness within a virtual 3D world concept is possible where the vehicle is composed of collaborative agents. This approach is considered for application to the complex tetrahedron structure system from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) developed under the Autonomous Nano Technology Swarm (ANTS) program. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Broadband is a technology still penetrating the telecommunication market and is seen as the most significant evolutionary step since the emergence of the Internet. However we argue that in the rush to achieve market share, insufficient attention has been paid to quality issues, the central theme of this paper. Indeed the concept of quality is a multi-facetted one, for which various perspectives can be distinguished. In our work, we take a look at broadband quality as perceived by users in the UK and report the result of a survey, which determined the users' perception on broadband quality. The results of the survey show, that quality, though desired by many, has been short-changed by the desire to have access to the Internet via broadband at a lowest cost possible. However, this has not encouraged some consumers to take on broadband access despite some low prices offered by service providers as these low prices for broadband access is not commensurate to their needs. © 2006 ieee.

Embedded systems are today frequently used in many applications. Modern designs show a rising complexity, partially including multiple CPU cores. The verification of such systems has to deal with parallel execution of programs and resource conflicts. In this paper we introduce an approach for the formal verification of multi core embedded systems. Bounded model checking is used as the underlying technique. It is shown how it can be applied to the verification of multi core systems ranging from the hardware up to the interaction of multiple cores on the software layer. The approach is demonstrated by the complete verification of a dual core RISC CPU

multi-core processors are planned for virtually all next-generation HPC systems. In a preliminary evaluation of AMD Opteron Dual-core processor systems, we investigated the scaling behavior of a set of micro-benchmarks, kernels, and applications. In addition, we evaluated a number of processor affinity techniques for managing memory placement on these multi-core systems. We discovered that an appropriate selection of MPI task and memory placement schemes can result in over 25% performance improvement for key scientific calculations. We collected detailed performance data for several large-scale scientific applications. Analyses of the application performance results confirmed our micro-benchmark and scaling results

The domain of eHome systems is a special application-area for pervasive computing. many different kinds of devices are introduced to the home area to provide functionality for enhanced comfort or security. A similar level of heterogeneity can be found at the software level: many different vendors supply eHome systems with drivers and services, which intend to compute sensor information and trigger devices in the eHome. This multi-level heterogeneity leads to system faults in terms of deadlocks and unpredictable or disillusioning behavior. We call these error conditions conflicts. Pervasive systems, especially eHome systems, is only useful and thus successful, if such conflicts can be handled properly. In this paper, we analyze eHome systems with respect to types of conflicts and discuss how conflicts can be detected. We show that the dynamic conflict detection is reasonable and possible by a rule-based conflict detection. The detection is well-founded on a formal specification and is seamlessly integrated into the paradigm of component-based software construction

The quality of service (QoS) of enterprise distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems can degrade under certain operating conditions and system architectures. This paper provides two contributions to research on model-driven development (MDD) tools and methods that help identify and rectify these QoS problems in component-based enterprise DRE systems. First, we show how MDD tools can be used to simplify and automate the evaluation of component-based DRE systems to identify QoS problems. Second, we show how MDD tools can be used to specify alternative QoS polices for component-based DRE systems and synthesize metadata automatically to simplify system (re)configurations that rectify QoS problems. We illustrate our MDD tools on a case study of multi-layer resource management services for shipboard computing systems that automate many aspects of power, navigation, command and control, and tactical operations

Freehand gestural interaction with direct-touch computation surfaces has been the focus of significant research activity. While many interesting gestural interaction techniques have been proposed, their design has been mostly ad-hoc and has not been presented within a constructive design framework. In this paper, we develop and articulate a set of design principles for constructing - in a systematic and extensible manner - multi-hand gestures on touch surfaces that can sense multiple points and shapes, and can also accommodate conventional point-based input. To illustrate the generality of these design principles, a set of bimanual continuous gestures that embody these principles are developed and explored within a prototype tabletop publishing application. We carried out a user evaluation to assess the usability of these gestures and use the results and observations to suggest future design guidelines.

many of the challenges faced by today's government-international trade, health care, and national security-require complex multi-agency responses involving public and private networked institutions cooperating on a global scale. In this paper, we examine the service-oriented architecture (SOA)-based approach in supporting the overall enterprise architecture used by the federal government for information sharing among multiple agencies. We apply SOA industrial concepts along with the Business Process Executable Language (BPEL) service broker model to enhance a set of geographic information system-based business performance modeling and planning tools middleware (Integrated Enterprise Engineering Workbench (IEEW)). Applying the SOA concept and the BPEL model has advanced the IEEW one step further in its scope to serve as a case study for the modernization planning and integration of information systems for the multi-agency challenge of monitoring and managing international trade.

TXL is a functional programming language specifically designed for expressing source transformation tasks. Originally designed for the rapid prototyping of modest syntactic enhancements, in recent years it has been extensively used in large scale source code analysis and reengineering applications that are much more challenging. As a result, many common programming techniques needed in these larger scale applications are difficult or impossible to express in TXL. Examples include multi-way decisions, generic rules and functions, polymorphism and information hiding. In this paper we introduce ETXL, an experimental extension of TXL which includes convenient features designed to address these issues. Designed to be a compatible variant that remains faithful to the original TXL syntax and semantics, ETXL has itself been prototyped as a source transformation to original TXL.
