many of the challenges faced by today's government-international trade, health care, and national security-require complex multi-agency responses involving public and private networked institutions cooperating on a global scale. In this paper, we examine the service-oriented architecture (SOA)-based approach in supporting the overall enterprise architecture used by the federal government for information sharing among multiple agencies. We apply SOA industrial concepts along with the Business Process Executable Language (BPEL) service broker model to enhance a set of geographic information system-based business performance modeling and planning tools middleware (Integrated Enterprise Engineering Workbench (IEEW)). Applying the SOA concept and the BPEL model has advanced the IEEW one step further in its scope to serve as a case study for the modernization planning and integration of information systems for the multi-agency challenge of monitoring and managing international trade.

TXL is a functional programming language specifically designed for expressing source transformation tasks. Originally designed for the rapid prototyping of modest syntactic enhancements, in recent years it has been extensively used in large scale source code analysis and reengineering applications that are much more challenging. As a result, many common programming techniques needed in these larger scale applications are difficult or impossible to express in TXL. Examples include multi-way decisions, generic rules and functions, polymorphism and information hiding. In this paper we introduce ETXL, an experimental extension of TXL which includes convenient features designed to address these issues. Designed to be a compatible variant that remains faithful to the original TXL syntax and semantics, ETXL has itself been prototyped as a source transformation to original TXL.

Mobile robot teams are particularly suited to applications where infrastructure is unavailable or damaged since they can be used to quickly form an infrastructure-less mobile ad hoc network performing tasks in a distributed manner. In such deployment scenarios, localization of individual robots is essential for enabling many applications. In this paper, we propose CoCoA, Coordinated Cooperative localization for mobile multi-robot Ad Hoc Networks, that is low-cost, quickly deployable, energy-efficient, and provides reasonable accuracy for the applications. In CoCoA, only a subset of the robots in the mobile robot team are equipped with external localization devices (e.g. GPS, laser rangers, vision sensors). Subsequently, while robots perform their tasks, they cooperate to help localize each other without requiring static landmarks to be deployed. In addition, CoCoA coordinates the localization operations of robots to reduce energy consumption. Using detailed simulations and localization models calibrated from experimental data, we find that CoCoA is effective in reducing energy consumption while providing good localization accuracy.

The increasing power of computational resources makes possible the development of autonomous control systems that are capable of dealing with the complex task of path planning in dynamic and uncertain environments. Autonomous vehicles have applications in military operations, search and rescue, environment monitoring, commercial cleaning, material handling, and homeland security. While single vehicles performing solo missions will yield some benefits, greater benefits will come from the cooperation of teams of vehicles. One motivation for multiple autonomous vehicles is to achieve the same gains for mechanically controlled systems as has been gained in distributed computation. Rather than having a single monolithic (and therefore expensive and complicated) machine do everything, the hope is that many inexpensive, simple machines, can achieve the same or enhanced functionality, through coordination. There are numerous applications for cooperative control of multiple autonomous vehicles including space-based interferometry, future autonomous combat systems, autonomous household appliances, enhanced surveillance systems, hazardous material handling systems, and active reconfigurable sensing systems. The purpose of this workshop is overview the state of the art research in cooperative control of multiple autonomous vehicles. The presenters have been actively involved in this area over the past several years. Throughout the workshop the presenters will demonstrate both theoretical and experimental results in cooperative control. In particular, formation and non-formation type cooperative control problems will be introduced. Distributed consensus algorithms and their applications in multi-vehicle coordination will be presented. Recent research in autonomy and cooperation for small unmanned air vehicles will be presented.

We are developing the Fuce processor based on the dataflow computing model. Fuce means FUsion of Communication and Execution. In order to execute many threads with multiple thread execution units efficiently, the Fuce processor executes multiple threads using the exclusive multi-thread execution model. The core concept of the exclusive multi-thread execution model is continuation based multi-thread execution, which is derived from dataflow computing. The Fuce processor aims to fuse the intra-processor execution and inter-processor communication. The Fuce processor unifies processing inside the processor and communication with processors outside as events, and executes the event as a thread. In this paper we introduce the architecture of the Fuce processor and evaluate the concurrency performance of a Fuce processor which we described in VHDL. As a result, we understood that the processor has concurrency capability when there is sufficient thread level parallelism.

Software support for multiple hard-ware threads like the Pentium 4's Hyperthreading Technology or the upcoming multi-core desk-top processors is required even for traditional single processor domains like home and office systems. Although the modeling of concurrent systems is already quite advanced, the current engineering practice usually does not yield highly concurrent applications without significant extra efforts due to several limitations of most methods for concurrent systems design. Unlike other methods, we consider the problem as a deployment problem where the software components need to be deployed on different multiple execution units depending on the system configuration. To overcome this, we present a component model and design approach based on the execution semantics of UML 2.0 Activities that enables the efficient design and construction of software applications with increased inherent concurrency and scalability for multi-processor platforms. The application of the approach and its benefits are demonstrated in a real world web server example.

many models of the cardiovascular system (e.g. cardiac electrical activity, autonomous nervous system,...) have been proposed for the last decades. Research is now focusing on the integration of these different models, in order to study more complicated physiopathological states in clinical applications context. To get round the practical limitations of existing models, multi-formalism modelling appears as a way to ease the integration of these different models together. This paper presents an original methodology allowing to combine different types of description formalisms. This method has been applied to define a multi-formalism model of cardiac action potential propagation on a 2D grid of endocardial cells, combining cellular automata and a set of cells defined by the Beeler-Reuter model. Results, obtained under physiologic and ischemic conditions, highlight the improvements in term of computing compared with mono-formalism systems, while keeping the necessary explanatory strength for a practical clinical use.

The High Level Architecture (HLA) is a standardized framework for distributed simulation that promotes reuse and interoperability of simulation components (federates). Federates are processes that communicate with each other in the simulation via the Run Time Infrastructure (RTI). When running a large scale simulation over many nodes/workstations, some may get more workload than others. To run the simulation as efficiently as possible, the workload should be uniformly distributed over the nodes. Current RTI implementations are very static, and do not allow any load balancing. Load balancing of a HLA federation can be achieved by scheduling new federates on the node with the least load and migrating executing federates from a high loaded node to a light loaded node. Process migration has been a topic of research for many years. However, most implementations have been inside the framework of mobile agents. Earlier research have demonstrated how simple federates can be migrated. These federates interact by sending interactions (messages) and have a limited execution state. However, "real" federates are more complicated. Instead of only sending messages, they normally also register objects and update the objects' attributes. The attributes are owned by the updating federate, and this ownership must be transferred when migrating such a federate. This paper describes how migration can be performed on federates from a real federation, the Sushi restaurant federation, extracted from the book "Creating Computer Simulation systems". We outline how ownership is used in HLA-based simulations and how to transfer ownership during migration. We also touch on some issues when porting a federation from the previous HLA 1.3 standard to the new ieee 1516 standard. © 2005 The MITRE Corporation. All rights reserved.

Mobile multi-agent systems (MAS) systems can be used with real success in a growing number of eCommerce applications nowadays. Security has been identified as numerous times by different researchers as a top criterion for the acceptance of mobile agent adoption. In this paper, we present an in-depth analysis of behavior patterns of a mobile MAS platform when using different cryptographic protocols to assure communication and migration integrity and confidentiality. Different use case sceneries of eCommerce applications as well as many other aspects have been studied, such as overhead, different communication patterns, different loads and bandwidth issues. This work is also extensible to other mobile and non-mobile MAS platforms. The results obtained can be used and should be taken into account by designers and implementers of secure mobile and also non-mobile agent platforms and agents
