Method for the Real-Time Simulation of High Switching Frequency Power Electronic Converter Considering Switch Junction Capacitance

The high precision of the R-on / R-off model makes it suitable for the real-time simulation of high switching frequency power electronic converters (HSFPECs). However, the R-on / R-off model encounters two significant challenges: 1) Neglecting the switching transient process introduces inaccuracies in simulations. 2) Iterative operations when judging the switch status limit the switching frequency range. To address these issues, this paper proposes an improved method that incorporates the effects of switch junction capacitance. The calculated amount is significantly reduced by constructing an equivalent state equation without regarding junction capacitances as state variables and the switch status can be obtained by non-iterative operations. Moreover, this method can ensure the system stability by using backward Euler method and realizes the decoupling between the half-bridge arms, which greatly reduces the workload of judging the switch status for the R-on / R-off model. Finally, the field programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation scheme is presented, and an LLC resonant converter with 30 ns simulation time step and 250 kHz switching frequency is simulated on FPGA. The results derived from the real-time simulation and hardware experiment corroborate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method.

Kent Mapping-Based Chaotic Frequency Modulation for Conducted Common-Mode EMI Suppression in IPOS Dual Active Bridge Converters

With advancements in wide bandgap devices and electromagnetic materials, dual active bridge (DAB) converters are widely used, offering benefits such as increased power density and reduced filter requirements. However, their high frequency can compromise electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance. In this article, we propose a novel Kent mapping-based frequency modulation method to address this issue. It facilitates chaotic variable switching frequency modulation (C-VSFM), effectively suppressing conducted common-mode (CM) EMI in input-parallel-output-series (IPOS) DAB converters. This method reduces noise spikes in the conducted EMI spectrum, easing the demands for EMI filter design. We derive voltage spectra and real-time frequency variation ranges under C-VSFM conditions. Through experimentation, the efficacy of the proposed scheme is verified, which can effectively suppress conducted CM EMI across the test frequency band. Finally, we compare different frequency limits and draw conclusions on reducing conducted EMI effects. This analysis can aid in understanding and mitigating EMI challenges in DAB converters, offering insights for future applications.

A Comprehensive Induction Heating Power System for Large All-Metal Cooking Pots With Energy Storage

Given the high-power requirements of commercial automatic cooking machines, a comprehensive all-metal induction heating (IH) power system with an energy storage port is proposed. The energy storage port serves to peak shave the IH system and utilizes time-of-use electricity pricing to save costs. While domestic IH is primarily used for ferromagnetic (FM) pots, there is a challenge with non-FM (NFM) pots due to their small equivalent resistance, which can easily cause overcurrent issues for inverters. To achieve all-metal heating, a dual-resonance topology inverter with switches is proposed. The system can utilize a half-bridge (HB) LC series resonant inverter for heating FM pots or a full-bridge (FB) LLLC resonant inverter for heating NFM pots. Compared to the LLC resonant circuit, the LLLC resonant circuit significantly reduces output impedance angle and switching losses, thereby improving system efficiency. In addition, an average pulse density modulation (APDM)-pulse frequency modulation (PFM) control strategy is proposed for heating NFM cookware. During heavy loads, an APDM control strategy is adopted for power regulation;while during light loads, the system switches from FB resonant inverter to HB resonant inverter, and the control strategy changes from APDM to PFM. This ensures that the load current remains continuous, allowing the system to operate efficiently across the entire power range. Finally, a 5.5-kW/10-kHz experimental prototype was developed. The topology, the parameter design method, and the control strategy were verified through this prototype.

Ultrasonic power transfer (UPT) is a promising wireless power transfer technique with great development potential. Establishing an accurate model that describes the transmission process of the system is crucial for designing an UPT system. When the thickness of the piezoelectric transducer cannot be neglected compared to its diameter, considering vibrations in both thickness and radial directions can improve the model accuracy. Moreover, losses in the system during transmission was overlooked in the existing two-dimensional equivalent circuit model. In addition, slight radial misalignment in a practical UPT system can affect the transmission performance. In this article, we propose a 2-D equivalent circuit model of UPT systems that takes into account both losses and radial misalignment for cylindrical piezoelectric transducers, which is derived based on a two-port network and validated by comparing the system input impedance, input power, output power, and efficiency from the model and experiment. The results demonstrate that without radial misalignment of piezoelectric transducers, the proposed equivalent circuit model improved the accuracy significantly as compared with the existing 1-D and 2-D models. The derivation and incorporation of the radial misalignment matrix in the model also shows an accurate representation of the system and the consistent results from the proposed model and experiment are obtained showing the same trend of system performance with varying radial misalignment. The developed equivalent circuit model lays the foundation for accurate analysis, design, control, and optimization of UPT systems.

Single-Phase Non-Isolated Inverter With Shared-Ground and Broad Input Voltage Operation

The produced voltage of photovoltaic (PV) system is largely affected by environmental variables, such as light intensity and temperature. The PV power conditioning system is required to regulate output ac voltage for broad input voltage variations. This article proposes a new single-phase nonisolated PV inverter with wide input voltage range, due to its buck-boost voltage inversion in a single-stage. The most standout feature of the proposed inverter is its simple and compact construction, as it can be fabricated by adding second-order input and output LCfilters to an integrated three-leg inverter module. A small value film capacitor is added across inverter module, providing energy storage and also acting as natural lossless snubber for switching devices. It contributes a shared-ground point between PV panel and grid-neutral, eliminating the common-mode voltage variations (at high-frequency) by clamping the voltage between grid and PV panel. Therefore, it can successfully eliminate the flow of leakage current by parasitic capacitors of transformerless PV inverter systems. The proposed inverter can provide reactive power support. Extensive experimental results are performed on a laboratory-built hardware prototype to confirm the practicality of the proposed PV inverter.

Common-ground switched-capacitor-based multilevel inverters are gaining attention due to their low leakage current and increased voltage gain in photovoltaic applications. However, it allows a few redundant switching states while generating multilevel output, where the failure of any switch may cause the whole system to shut down. Therefore, this article proposes a fault-tolerant common-ground-based five-level inverter with static and dynamic boosting features. The capacitors in the circuit are connected across the switching devices to realize static boosting two times and maintain voltage balance in a fundamental switching cycle. Meanwhile, the input-side boost converter helps to dynamically boost the input voltage and minimize the inrush current drawn from the supply. Also, the redundant switches and reconfigured switching strategy make the suggested circuit fault-tolerant. The proposed inverter requires a few switching components to realize multilevel output, voltage boosting, and fault-tolerant operation. A thorough simulation and experimental studies have been conducted to validate the proposed inverter's capabilities during single and multiple switch faults. A detailed reliability analysis and comparative study demonstrate the effectiveness of the suggested inverter.

In this article, a new four-level shared switch converter with a buck-boost-based energy recovery stage is proposed for a switched reluctance motor drive. The proposed converter achieves a higher demagnetization voltage with a much lower voltage rating of the energy recovery capacitor, as compared to other energy recovery-based converter variants. Furthermore, the voltage ratings of the active switches in the proposed converter are lesser than that of the conventional converters, for a given demagnetization voltage. The availability of soft-chopping operation in the proposed converter is beneficial for reducing the high-frequency ripple in the torque and lateral vibration of stator poles. This article presents the converter topology, its operating modes, and the design of the energy recovery stage in detail. Experimental results are presented to show the drive operation of an 8/6 switched reluctance motor driven by the proposed converter. A detailed comparison of the proposed converter with the conventional counterparts is also presented.

In the application of pulsed electric fields for tumor ablation, bipolar pulses are preferred over unipolar pulses due to their more uniform therapeutic effects and reduced muscle contractions. This study designs a linear transformer driver (LTD) source based on a reverse-series topology structure for generating bipolar pulses. During the discharge phase, the LTD primary modules at all levels are grounded, offering the advantages of low isolation voltage levels and simple and reliable switch control, with theoretically unrestricted induction stacking modules. The bipolar pulse source is composed of structurally identical unipolar modules connected in reverse series in their secondary windings. However, this structure introduces the side effect of reverse inductive adder of induced electromotive forces. Therefore, this study proposes a bipolar complementary short-circuit circuit to eliminate the effects of reverse inductive adder. In addition, a primary charging power supply using a negative-polarity capacitor charging power supply (CCPS) was employed to enhance the stability of the triggering circuit. Finally, a magnetic core reset circuit was designed to achieve a wider output pulse duration and improve the utilization of the magnetic core. The multiscale experiment results demonstrate the robust and stable capability of the bipolar pulse source in the pulse discharge and tumor ablation, with the following parameters: voltage amplitude ranging from 0 to +/- 5000 V, current amplitude ranging from 0 to +/- 100 A, pulse duration ranging from 300 ns to 1 mu s, and intervals between positive and negative pulses ranging from 0 to 1 ms. All pulse parameters can be flexibly adjusted using a custom-made computer system.

A Stationary-Frame Residual-Current-Based ITSC Localization Method for Induction Motors Considering Effect of Different Faulty Phase

The diagnosis of interturn short circuit (ITSC) fault at an incipient stage is of importance for induction motor drives to achieve a reliable operation. Even though a lot of efforts had been made to detect ITSC, the fault localization has not been adequately considered in the existing works. In order to realize a fast ITSC detection and an accurate localization of the faulty phase, which is of benefit for postfault management, this article proposes a low-complexity residual current-based diagnosis method. In the proposed method, current residuals between the predicted and measured currents are obtained by a healthy current prediction model without complex observer. Rather than the conventional methods, which use current residuals in the rotary reference frame, the proposed method explores residuals in the stationary reference frame to construct fault indicators. An important benefit of this method is that it allows a direct transformation of the obtained residuals to the three-phase reference frame. As a result, a fault location indicator can be established simply by the relationship between the three-phase current residuals. A reliable fault localization is then achieved. The effectiveness of the proposed method on ITSC detection and localization has been demonstrated by experimental tests. Moreover, the robustness of the proposed method against variable operating conditions and parameter mismatches is also confirmed.

Frequency-Divided Control and Stability Analysis of Single-Phase Three-Level Flying Capacitor Boost Inverter

The single-phase three-level flying capacitor (TLFC) boost inverter is a power converter with active power decoupling without requiring additional components. However, it has the characteristic that the number of control degrees of freedom is fewer than the number of control targets, which poses a challenge to controller design. To address this issue, this article proposes a frequency-divided control method for the TLFC boost inverter. According to the frequency-divided idea, the decoupling control input of the system is divided into a dc component and an ac component design. The dc component regulates the flying capacitor's average voltage, and the ac component suppresses the dc bus voltage's pulsation. The proposed method can effectively suppress the double-line-frequency ripple in both the input current and the bus voltage and exhibit high robustness. Furthermore, considering that the TLFC boost inverter is a nonlinear periodic time-varying system, a single-input single-output (SISO) admittance model is developed to analyze the system's stability under the proposed control method. Finally, a 1.5-kW hardware prototype is built to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control method and stability analysis.
