This article presents a resonant switched-capacitor (RSC) dc-dc converter for visible light communication (VLC) applications operating as both high-efficiency power converter and fast-response data transmitter. By operating under soft switching, the topology allows for higher switching frequency and higher slew rate so that the VLC functionality can be embedded into the power stage without an auxiliary switch. In the literature, this additional switch has been presented as a viable implementation of on-off-keying (OOK) and variable pulse position modulation (VPPM) for data transmission yet, at the same time, is a major efficiency bottleneck for higher transmission rates due to its inherent hard-switching operation. This justifies new efforts in enabling pulse-based transmission (PBT) without this additional switch. A 10-W prototype was built to demonstrate such feasibility, operating at a switching frequency of 500 kHz, resulting in nominal efficiency of 85% during data transmission under the VPPM scheme, achieving up to 100 kb/s for various brightness levels, over a distance up to 1m.

A Two-Stage Buck-Boost Integrated LLC Converter With Extended ZVS Range and Reduced Conduction Loss for High-Frequency and High-Efficiency Applications

Two-stage cascade architecture is widely used in the modular power supply applications. In order to reduce the additional component number caused by the cascading structure, the power switch integration technique is proposed in numerous literature studies. However, the power switch integration leads to both the efficiency degradation and the abnormal gain of the stage employed. In this article, the four-switch noninverting buck-boost converter is merged with the LLC resonant converter. The proposed integration method has no awful influence on the efficiency and the gain of the LLC stage. Meanwhile, the soft switch capability of the integrated bridge can be enhanced due to the accumulation of the two currents of the buck-boost stage and the LLC stage during dead time. Moreover, the current of the two-stage will commutate to cancel out with each other during the conduction period, reducing the conduction loss and improving the overall efficiency. The benefits of the integrated bridge make the proposed converter appropriate for the high-frequency and high-efficiency application. Finally, a 720-W 1-MHz prototype is built to prove the performance of the proposed converter. The prototype achieves a peak efficiency of 96.4% and the input voltage range of 250-420 V.

1 MHz 48-12 V Regulated DCX With Single Transformer

In this article, a 1-MHz-regulated DCX (RDCX) with single transformer is proposed for high-power-density high-efficiency 48-12 V dc-dc conversion. In the proposed converter, a dc transformer (DCX) works at fixed switching frequency to realize isolation and output power conversion and an auxiliary pulsewidth modulation (PWM) converter is applied to realize voltage regulation. The auxiliary dc-dc is fed from the auxiliary winding of the transformer and its output is in series with the input dc source. The output regulation is achieved by regulating the output voltage of auxiliary dc-dc converter. Furthermore, only a small portion of power is dealt by the auxiliary PWM dc-dc converter. Thus, the total efficiency is a little bit lower than the DCX and higher than that of conventional two-stage solution. The operation principle and the design guidelines of the proposed RDCX are presented in this article. A 360 W 40-60 V/12 V dc-dc prototype is built to verify the theoretical analysis and design guidelines. In the prototype, 9.1% of load power is dealt by the auxiliary dc-dc at nominal 55 V input voltage and, at worst case, which happens rarely and the duration is short, 50% of load power is dealt by the auxiliary dc-dc stage. Finally, 97.3% peak efficiency is achieved.

Dual-Functional Wireless Power Transfer and Data Communication Design for Micromedical Implants

Smart microimplants are playing increasing roles in modern medicine. Wireless power transfer (WPT) and data communication are essential components in microimplants. In order to minimize device size, a preferred design is to share the wireless power channel with the data communication links consisting of a downlink and an uplink. While the implementation of the downlink is relatively easy, the uplink from the implant to the external unit is difficult to implement due to the limited power supply and small transceiver coil available within the implant. In this work, we present a new design of the data uplink that utilizes a special tapped coil and a simple passive circuit to produce a strong pulsed magnetic field (PMF) for signal emission. The strong PMF, which is oscillatory at the same resonant frequency as the WPT carrier, allows wireless data transmission over a longer distance through the WPT channel. Our new design is studied analytically, and the function of our circuit is confirmed by a computer simulation. A prototype is constructed, and its performance is compared with the existing load shift keying (LSK) method. Our experimental result showed that the design produced more than 15 times stronger signal strength at the receiving end.

Hardware Implementation of Neural Self-Interference Cancellation

In-band full-duplex systems can transmit and receive information simultaneously and on the same frequency band. However, due to the strong self-interference caused by the transmitter to its own receiver, the use of non-linear digital self-interference cancellation is essential. In this work, we describe a hardware architecture for a neural network-based non-linear self-interference (SI) canceller and we compare it with our own hardware implementation of a conventional polynomial based SI canceller. Our results show that, for the same SI cancellation performance, the neural network canceller has an 8.1x smaller area and requires 7.7x less power than the polynomial canceller. Moreover, the neural network canceller can achieve 7 dB more SI cancellation while still being 1.2x smaller than the polynomial canceller and only requiring 1.3x more power. These results show that NN-based methods applied to communications are not only useful from a performance perspective, but can also lead to order-of-magnitude implementation complexity reductions.

Using Sampled-Data Modeling Method to Derive Equivalent Circuit and Linearized Control Method for Dual-Active-Bridge Converter

In this article, based on sampled-data modeling technique, a second-order equivalent circuit that can describe the global dynamic characteristics of dual active bridge (DAB) converter is developed. The proposed technique can characterize the dynamics of the ac current through the transformer and the output voltage. Afterward, by using a sensitive-based tool, named participation factor, it is identified which state variables are critical for system stability and which state variables provide negligible effects. On this basis, the large-signal equivalent circuit is simplified, meanwhile, the parasitic resistance is still taken into account by an intuitive "loss branch." This model can be used to comprehensively investigate the relationship of the DAB converter stability versus circuit parameters, controller gain, input/reference voltage, and the load conditions, and these results can be expressed analytically. Furthermore, a linearized control method is proposed to eliminate the nonlinear terms in the equivalent circuit model. It facilitates to reduce the sensitivity of system stability to the load condition and reference voltage and helps to enlarge the stable region. Finally, the proposed model is validated by comparing the results obtained by the model with the simulations and experimental results. The effectiveness of the linearized control method is also demonstrated.

Leakage Current Suppression of Single-Phase Power-Decoupled Current-Source Inverters

Recently, single-phase power-decoupled current-source inverters (PD-CSIs) have been proposed to eliminate the use of electrolytic capacitor (E-cap) having a short lifespan. This type of inverter also features a high-efficiency and compact circuit design via multiplexing use of circuit components. However, it is found in this article that component sharing inevitably renders coupled switching states for incorporating charging and discharging phases of decoupling buffers, e.g., film and ceramic capacitors. The resultant effect will be a significant increase in the common-mode voltage, which may lead to an unpleasant leakage current. In this article, a generalized modulation technique is proposed for the PD-CSIs to perform active power decoupling (APD) operation without generating much leakage current. The generic operating principles of the PD-CSIs are analyzed synthetically. The formation of leakage current in the coupled switching states is analyzed. The design of the proposed modulation technique and the power-decoupling controller is provided. Simulation and experimental results of typical types of PD-CSIs in a 110-V ac grid are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed modulation scheme. With the proposed modulation scheme, the leakage current of the PD-CSI can be reduced by 56%.

Modeling and Bifurcation Analysis for Photovoltaic Single-Sourced Trinary Inverter With Auxiliary Floating Capacitors Controlled by Finite-Control-Set Model Predictive Control

Asymmetric cascaded H-bridge (ACHB) trinary inverter has several advantages, such as high efficiency due to high power main H-bridge modulated under a fundamental low frequency, optimal modulation due to nonredundant output voltage levels, and reduction in output filter sizes due to high-quality staircase output waveform. However, ACHB inverter requires prestage isolated dc sources for the individual H-bridges and has inherent control issues of nonregenerative operation, being incompatible with photovoltaic source. This article proposes a single-stage, single-sourced ACHB trinary inverter topology without presources. Then, a control strategy using unity horizon length finite-control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) is proposed to modulate the ACHB inverter. Conventional unity horizon length FCS-MPC has presence of undesirable harmonics and chaos in its variable frequency switching waveform due to the minimum achievable error. Therefore, an exact discrete-time modeling for FCS-MPC is newly derived to show the nonlinear effects of power stage and control parameters in the closed-loop dynamics. And then, a bifurcation analysis-based design is proposed to eliminate the undesirable harmonics and chaos operation in the FCS-MPC closed-loop operation. The proposed topology and FCS-MPC controller design is implemented and verified in hardware by using a 2-kW prototype for standalone and grid-connected operation.
