As network technology has become more powerful and complex, it has become increasingly difficult to monitor the well-being of a network. Failure semantics, media, network equipment, and topologies are quickly evolving towards greater sophistication and lesser serviceability. We often wish that the locus of our network supervision were inside the network, as close as possible to the suspect faulty equipment, in order to perform unit verification and real-time in situ repairs of network equipment. Unlike simple end-to-end "pings", this directional, sub-end-to-end supervision requires a wide range of data concerning topologies, type of network nodes, node contingencies, and proven test suites for them. Our "Regatta" framework makes supervision of network nodes (for example, switches, routers, firewalls) and node aggregates (clouds) practical by automating the acquisition and utilization of this data. The resulting platform marries the ease of end-to-end monitoring (the operator does not know about intervening network nodes or topologies) with the merits of unit supervision into the network (highly specialized coverage). Regatta overcomes key weaknesses in both end-to-end monitoring (wherein a whole end-to-end extent is the sole testing scope of choice) and unit supervision into the network (that is, multi-dimensional dependencies on the network itself). A Regatta's limiting factor is in the availability of Java runtimes inside the network - such runtimes are required in order to dynamically inflate and customize Regatta's artifacts. Short of active networks or mobile agents infrastructures supporting Regatta's widespread application, the Regatta framework already yields an appealing supervision resolution when attached to actual networks, and scales up to the finest resolution in experimental settings with all Java-enabled network nodes.

Over the last couple of years we have been working on the development of mobile agents systems and their application to the areas of telecommunications and network management. This work has produced positive results: a competitive mobile agent platform was built, the run-time benefits of mobile agents were proved, and our industrial partners have developed practical applications that are being integrated into commercial products. However, despite the positive results, we feel that mobile agent technology is still not ready to enter the path of mainstream software development. In our perspective, one of the main reasons for this situation arises from the traditional approach to mobile agent technology. This approach, based on the familiar concept of the mobile-agent distributed platform as an extension of the operating system, focuses too much on the mobile agents and associated issues (mobility, agent lifecycle, security, coordination, etc.) and provides poor support for the development of applications where mobile agents are just one of several available technologies. Learning from past experience, we are now working on a new approach where the focus is brought back to the applications and mobile agents become just one the tools available to develop distributed systems. This provides a much lighter framework for application-based mobile agent systems. This paper presents the lessons learned from our previous project and discusses the new concept we are developing: application-centric mobile agent systems.

Existing active network architectures depend on using statically typed languages for protection and performance. Unfortunately, this limits some of the more dynamic features of an active network. In this paper, we present PANTS (Python Active Node Transfer System)-a dynamically extensible active network architecture. We describe a new architecture for an active node which does not depend on language-based security but provides the flexibility to perform dynamic changes to the node and to the capsules. An implementation conforming to this architecture is described and compared with existing active network architectures. © 2000 ieee.

NetTap is a new platform for prototyping, field testing, and deploying network services. NetTap is based on a PC running FreeBSD, and can be configured as a bridge, router, or host. NetTap's API allows user level network applications to send or receive packets on standard network adapters without copying or system call overheads. NetTap's watchdog timer and simple bypass switch can be configured to preserve network connectivity in case of NetTap failure. Experiments demonstrate substantial performance advantages of the NetTap API over FreeBSD's network programming APIs (Berkeley packet filters, ipfv, and divert sockets). In particular, NetCounter, an application for capturing and aggregating IP network billing records, achieves greater throughput on NetTap at user level than does FreeBSD's IP forwarding at kernel level. © 2000 ieee.

We propose the use of "selectors for (active) packet flows" similar to tags employed in the IP world. Their impact on the performance of an active network node is significant, as active packets have to be demultiplexed not only to the network layer, but all the way to an application level execution environment. We have built an Active network Node that implements the selector based Simple Active Packet Format (SAPF). Our measurements show that SAPF packets can be processed 30% faster than regular IP packets that use the traditional Active network Encapsulation Protocol (ANEP) header. © 2000 ieee.

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in introducing more advanced services and functionality into networks. This is the primary driver behind the ongoing research on active and programmable networking. A central part of this research is to design an extensible architecture for network nodes that can be dynamically specialized to provide customized network services, to converge on a set of basic facilities provided by all nodes, and to provide the interface to these facilities. While several architectures have been proposed, they have so far been realized using prototype operating systems or proprietary programming languages. Lack of robust platforms for experimentation remains a significant obstacle for research on new network services. We have built a platform for research on active and programmable networks, based on Linux. Our changes to the kernel proper are minimal and are contained in a small kernel patch that is compatible with multiple versions of Linux (2.2.2 and higher), enabling us to benefit from the rapid evolution and industrial support of Linux in general, and specifically those parts that are outside of our interests. In this paper, we describe the platform and give examples of its use. © 2000 ieee.

One of the traditional goals of networking has been to hide details of network topology from end users. As networks become larger and more heterogeneous, however, situations arise in which the ability to identify particular topological properties enables capabilities and performance that are difficult to achieve with a purely "black box" interface to network topology. Examples of such situations include deployment of active networking functionality to strategic points (e.g., upstream from a lossy link) or the construction of a secure overlay topology on a network with selective support for IP security. On the other hand, an approach that "opens up" the network without constraints seems neither necessary nor practical. We therefore propose a method to query and synthesize network information that allows constrained programmability. We demonstrate the method on a set of examples, and we discuss our implementation within an active networking environment. © 2000 ieee.

End-to-end connectivity is growing increasingly diverse, with orders-of-magnitude differences in characteristics throughout the network. At the same time, most applications assume a level of network characteristics below which they either provide no service, or service at a cost that is higher than the user is willing to pay. open-architecture networks can help applications degrade gracefully when network conditions are poor by pushing adaptation technology into the network. Unfortunately, since adaptation seeks to change the data stream during transmission, it is incompatible with the traditional model for reliable data streams. A new model of reliability is required to allow general the adaptation of reliable data streams. We propose one possible model that provides reliable delivery of the semantic meaning in the data stream, despite adaptation. We present this model in the context of Conductor, a framework for distributed adaptation. By using a reliability model that is compatible with adaptation, Conductor allows arbitrary distributed components to operate on a data stream without reducing end-to-end reliability. While Conductor is one possible adaptation service, it is also an example of the type of reliability model required in open-architecture networks. © 2000 ieee.

This paper describes a novel scheme for ensuring quality of service in a dynamically extensible active network. Applications can reserve bandwidth on each link, and the node provides the guaranteed amount by manipulating weights in a fair-sharing scheme. The reservations are represented as objects in the soft state at each node of the network. We demonstrate the versatility of this scheme by showing how to design an active protocol that seeks to reserve end-to-end bandwidth even when no single path can provide enough for its needs.
