Digital images are exposed to different types of noise due to transformation, compression, or external data embedding. The assessment of these images is important to check their validity before being used in different applications. Because of its simplicity and straightforward calculations, the Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) is used for evaluating digital images. PSNR, However, does not account for the human eye bias in preserving noise between textured and smooth areas. In this paper, a modified PSNR, named texture-based PSNR (T-PSNR), is proposed to enhance the PSNR metric for better image quality assessment. The metric is designed to be applied for watermarked image evaluation. © 2023 ieee.

A major problem in real-time packet-based communication systems, is misrouted or delayed packets which results in degraded perceived voice quality. If packets are not available on time, the packets are considered as lost. The easiest solution in a network terminal receiver is to replace silence for the duration of lost speech segments. In a high quality communication system, to avoid degradation in speech quality due to packet loss, a suitable method or algorithm is needed to replace the missing segments of speech. In this paper, we introduce an adaptive filter for replacement of lost speech segment. In this method Kalman filter as a state-space based method will be used to predict the clean speech signal in presence of additive noise, and also to increase the quality of reconstructed signal a post processing technique is used as bandwidth extension algorithm. © 2012 ieee.

The paper outlines a methodology for crafting an embedded processor system to replicate image features computed within a mat lab software environment onto a hardware-based processor system. The proposed approach depends on computing the features of the hand gesture images using Histograms of Oriented Gradients algorithm in the software media to be cloned to a hardware environment represented by an embedded processor system. Embedded Design Techniques were used to construct the processor system to be configured on Spartan 3E slice with DDR-SDRAM and EEPROM external memories connected to the processor via multiport memory controller embracing the processor local bus. The system saves the cloned features in the EEPROM for hardware image recognition applications. The designed configuration allows to be tailored with a robot camera circuitry for machine vision systems. © 2024 ieee.

In this study, We propose the cubic A1x131-xBi ternary alloy as a promising infrared material. We used the full potential-linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method within the Density Functional Theory (DFT) to predict the structural and electronic properties of the A1x131-xBi ternary alloys. The structural properties such as the equilibrium lattice parameter, bulk modulus, and its pressure derivative are investigated with the effect of the concentration variation of Al atom, x (x=0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1). We found that the equilibrium lattice parameter of A1x131-xBi ternary alloys increases when increasing the doping concentration of the Al atom, while its bulk modulus decreases. The energy band gap of the A1x131-xBi ternary alloys decreases with the increase in the Al doping concentration. The A1x131-xBi alloys present a semi-metallic character for 0.50 and 0.75 concentrations and are semiconductors at the other compositions. Our results show the direct nature of the energy band gap of the ternary A1x131-xBi alloy for all composition of Al substitution. To our knowledge, this is the first theoretical study of this ternary alloy that needs eventual experimental data for confirmations.

With the increasing numher of renewable energy generation and loading demands in the energy sector, the authors find the motivation in describing a new paradigm of the power grid, that can provide solutions for the fast growing demand. This paper presents new ideas about the intelligent power grid, with many elements interfaced by power electronics devices, and new nodes definition that present storage for buffer capabilities. In a similar way that telecommunication networks are packetizing and routing the information in a distributed and myopic fashion, such concept can be applied for the updated power grid. In this scenario, it is described how the power routers are managed, influenced by telecommunication restrictions. A simulation has been performed for demonstrating the effectiveness of the buffering capabilities in front of variable power generation and communications delays. A review on some available telecommunication technologies applicable to the new power grid is also presented.

Limitations in capacity of internal memory chips on embedded systems lead to the usage of external memories especially when processing large amount of data as images or videos. FPGAs as embedded system devices used in different signal processing applications require extra memory for data storage. Current attempts in programming Secure Digital (SD) cards as external memories attached to FPGAs came with utilization of aiding application or of shelf tools which consumes large amount of chip clock cycles and reduce the overall performance. In this paper, a hardware implementation of SD card programming is presented by using pure and standalone VHDL code with high programming flexibility. In addition, High-Capacity SD cards (SDHC) are implemented for maximum storage capacity to handle large amount of data. © 2024 ieee.

In this paper we present results on the optimization of device architectures for colour and imaging applications, using a device with a TCO/pinpi'n/TCO configuration. The effect of the applied voltage on the color selectivity is discussed. Results show that the spectral response curves demonstrate rather good separation between the red, green and blue basic colors. Combining the information obtained under positive and negative applied bias a colour image is acquired without colour filters or pixel architecture. A low level image processing algorithm is used for the colour image reconstruction.

Fluid filling lines are mechatronic systems that are an essential part of many manufacturing processes. It allows for the accurate and efficient filling of containers with various types of fluids, such as water, oil, and chemicals. This work presents the design and development of a fluid-filling system with a robotic arm conveyor for small-scale industries. The proposed system aimed to design flexible, user friendly and cost effective fluid filling line for small scale industries. The system is typically consists of a series of sensors, motors, and control systems that work together to accurately measure and dispense fluids into containers. In this project, the Arduino is used as the main controller to control the liquid pump motor as well as the movement of the robotic arms, which are used to carry the bottle from one location to another, by receiving input signals from adjustable IR sensors and sending output signals to the motors. The system passed testing stage under various conditions and was determined to be functioning satisfactorily. © 2024 ieee.

In linked electric power systems with various generating units, energy storage is crucial for maintaining frequency regulation. If load frequency control (LFC) capability is unable to balance out generation and demand mismatches, enormous frequency variations will manifest. One of the greatest solutions to handle these problems and keep the balance between energy generation and demand is quick-acting energy storage systems. The primary goal of this study is to examine how quickly responsive energy storage devices can be used to control frequency in contemporary power systems with various generating units. With regard to several typical power system operating scenarios, the effects of electrical energy storage systems such as superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) and capacitive energy storage (CES) have been examined. These storage solutions exhibit encouraging outcomes in the power systems under investigation. © 2023 ieee.

Transportation is facing fundamental change due to the rapid depletion of fossil fuels, environmental and health problems, the growing world population, rising standards of living with more individual mobility and the globalization of trade with its increasing international transport volume. To cope with these serious problems benign, renewable energy systems and much more efficient drives must be multiplied as rapidly as possible to replace the polluting combustion engines with their much too low efficiency and high fuel logistics cost. Consequently the vehicles of the future must be non-polluting and super-efficient, i.e. electric. The energy supply must come via smart grids from clean energy sources not affecting the health, climate and biosphere. It is shown how this transition to the clean, sustainable energy age is possible, feasible and why it is urgent. The important role of international ISO, IEC and ITU standards and the need for better legislation by means of the Global Energy Charter for Sustainable Development are also highlighted. ©2009 ieee.
