In this paper, the performance of a subspace beamformer, namely the multiple signal classification algorithm (MUSIC), is scrutinized in the presence of sensor position errors. Based on a perturbation model, a relationship between the array autocorrelation matrix and the source autocorrelation matrix is established. It is shown that under certain assumptions on the source signals, the Gaussian sensor perturbation errors can be modelled as additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) for an array where sensor positions are known perfectly. This correspondence can be used to equate position errors to an equivalent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for AWGN in performance evaluation. Finally, Cramer-Rao bound for the position perturbations that can be computed using the Cramer-Rao bound relations for the additive Gaussian noise case at high SNR's.

In this paper, random switch antenna array (RSAA) is proposed to apply to the switch antenna array (SAA) frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar system. Firstly, the signal model and signal processing method of RSAA is analyzed and it shows that RSAA can successfully solve azimuth-velocity coupling problem. Then we suppose a method by using RSAA to reduce the switching frequency and sampling rate based on sparse signal representation with multiple measurement vectors (MMV). It is shown in simulations that the proposed algorithms yield better performance in terms of azimuth-velocity decoupling and can obtain high image accuracy with less observation data.

We propose a method of indoor localization using array sensors. This method uses not only the signal strengths of received signals, but also the spatial information of impinging signals on array sensors. The signal subspaces, which include information about the strengths and angles of arrival of impinging signals on the array sensors, are used to identify the location of the terminal. We use the cosines of the principal angles between the signal subspaces of the spatial covariance matrices of the signals received at an array antenna to measure the similarity between signals transmitted from two locations. We conducted an experiment indoors to confirm the validity and effectiveness of our method. The experimental results confirm its effectiveness.

A large size phased array is a powerful system for surveillance, but must be appropriately decomposed as subarrays for efficient digital beamforming. One fundamental question is how to configure a large array as subarrays to satisfy various signal processing requirements. This work deals with two basic signal processing tasks, synthesizing multiple beams at subarray level and adaptively suppressing multiple interferences. Two optimization criteria to jointly design subarray configuration and digital weights for subarrays are proposed. To handle the large number of variables in the optimization formulations, we propose an alternating minimization approach with low computation cost. Numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

The ambiguity problem in direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation using a sensor array, manifests itself as spurious peaks in the DOA spectrum, making the true targets indistinguishable from the false alarms. A criterion that determines the presence of certain ambiguities inherent to a symmetric linear array was proposed in the literature. The criterion is a useful tool to design reliable sensor arrays. In this paper, a generalization of this ambiguity criterion is presented. The new ambiguity criterion encompasses more ambiguous DOAs and therefore gives a more accurate measurement of the reliability of an array design.

In this paper, we devise a sparse array design algorithm for adaptive beamforming. Our strategy is based on finding a sparse beamformer weight to maximize the output signal-tointerference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). The proposed method uses the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), and admits closed-form solutions at each ADMM iteration. Numerical results exhibit excellent performance of the proposed method, which is comparable to that of the exhaustive search approach.

Distributed consensus algorithms have recently gained a large interest in sensor networks as a way to achieve globally optimal decisions in a totally decentralized way, that is without the need of sending all the data collected by the sensors to a fusion center. The goal of this work is to show that modeling a consensus algorithm as the homogenization process of a fluid through an advection-diffusion process provides a fundamental clue to design innovative consensus algorithms whose convergence rate can be increased by acting on the (equivalent) advection mechanism, without increasing the coverage radius of any sensor. In particular, we show the increase of convergence rate resulting from a proper interplay between advection and diffusion mechanisms.

We consider the problem of localizing a source by means of a uniform linear array of sensors when the received signal is corrupted by multiplicative noise. Since the exact Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimator is computationally intensive, two approximate solutions are proposed, originating from the analysis of the high and low signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) cases, respectively. First, starting with the no additive noise case, a very simple approximate ML (AML(1)) estimator is derived. A theoretical expression for its asymptotic variance in the presence of additive noise is derived. It shows that the AML1 estimator has a performance close to the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for moderate to high SNR. Next, the low SNR case is considered and the corresponding AML(2) solution is derived. It is shown that the approximate ML criterion can be concentrated with respect to (w.r.t.) both the multiplicative and additive noise powers, leaving out a 2-D minimization problem instead of a 4-D problem required by the exact ML. Numerical results illustrate the performance of the estimators and confirm the validity of the theoretical analysis.

This paper discusses the maximum number of sources when their direction of arrivals (DOAs) are estimated by the method of direction estimation (MODE), and presents a modified version of MODE that can estimate more number of sources than that by the original MODE. It is well-known that M-element array can basically estimate up to (M - 1) DOAs, however the application of MODE may reduce up to M/2 DOAs because of its computation procedure. We propose a novel DOA estimation method by modifying MODE to employ peak-search of the primary eigenvector beam patterns instead of the null-search in the original MODE. Performance of the proposed method is evaluated through computer simulation.

This paper introduces an original method for target tracking in wireless sensor networks that combines machine learning and Kalman filtering. A database of radio-fingerprints is used, along with the ridge regression learning method, to compute a model that takes as input RSSI information, and yields, as output, the positions where the RSSIs are measured. This model leads to a position estimate for each target. The Kalman filter is used afterwards to combine the model's estimates with predictions of the target's positions based on acceleration information, leading to more accurate ones.
