Sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) has been used to obtain source direction-of-arrivals (DoAs) from uniform linear array (ULA) data. The maximum number of sources that can be resolved using a ULA is limited by the number of sensors in the array. It is known that sparse linear arrays such as co-prime and nested arrays can resolve more sources than the number of sensors. In this paper we demonstrate this using SBL. We compute the mean squared error in source power estimation as various parameters are varied.

This paper describes sound spot generation by 128-channel surrounded speaker array. A sound spot is a limited area within which an emitted sound is amplified. Sound spot generation is achieved by the Sum and Delay Beam Former (SDBF). A dedicated PCI 128-channel simultaneous input digital-to-analog (D/A) board is developed for a 128 channel speaker array with a maximum sampling rate of 22.7 us/sample. The 128-channel square speaker array can generate steerable a sound spot towards a specific point. Sound spots can be moved in approximately 10 ms. The speaker array can also generate different sound spots at specific points simultaneously. The performance of sound spot generation is evaluated by using sound pressure distribution maps. The speaker array can be used to that transmit necessary sound information to only a specific person in quiet places, such as a museum and a hospital.

The wide-sense stationary assumption has been frequently employed in array processing, since it results in uncorrelated frequency bins and consequently major simplifications arise. However, unlike stationary signals, significant interfrequency correlations are observable in nonstationary signals like speech. Here, we drop the stationarity assumption and will show that taking interfrequency correlations into account leads to higher noise reduction. We develop a framework to design nonstationary beamformers similar to the stationary Frost beamformers. Based on the noise model, it can be used to design both fixed and adaptive beamformers. The nonstationary beamformer derived here is a set of time-varying filters and hence can be seen as a set of time-frequency or wavelet transform filters.

We consider the design of two beams, formed at the base station, that will serve as the two channels for differential space-time block coding in a high-mobility outdoor scenario. The mobile is assumed to have one omnidirectional antenna. In one approach, we consider selecting, assuming no interference, the two most powerful beams produced by an RF beamformer. In the other approach, we make a compromise between power and Doppler spectrum partitioning. One channel is a beam that points directly at the mobile. The other beam is the difference of left and right beams, symmetric about the mobile. These left and right beams are Doppler compensated prior to forming their difference. Using computer simulation, we find that selecting beams based on power is more effective than selecting beams based on Doppler partitioning. We also find that using the two most powerful beams formed from eight antenna elements yields 7 dB and 8 dB SNR improvements, at 1.9 GHz and 5.8 GHz, respectively, relative to spatial diversity with two omnidirectional antennas.

In the existing works on FDA beam-patterns produced by the traditional FDA are time variant, and this causes difficulties in target detecting and beam-pattern steering. For solving the problem, several time-dependent frequency offsets based time-invariant FDA beam-pattern design methods have been proposed, which, however, neglected the time-range relationship and led to erroneous conclusions. In this note, considering the practical constraint and the relationship between time and range, it is concluded that FDA beam-patterns are always time-variant and it is unable to form time-invariant beam-patterns.

The Steered Response Power with phase transform (SRP-PHAT) is one of the most employed techniques for Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation with microphone arrays due its robustness against acoustical conditions as reverberation or noise. Among its main drawbacks is the growth of its computational complexity when the search space increases. To solve this issue, we propose the use of Neural Networks (NN) to obtain the DOA as a regression problem from a low resolution SRP-PHAT power map. The NNs can learn and exploit the information of the acoustic reflections of the room where the array is located with a training method that can be easily performed by an end user without technical knowledge.

In mobile sensor network localization problems we seek to estimate the position of the mobile sensor nodes by using a subset of pair-wise range measurements (among the nodes and with mobile anchors). When the sensor nodes are static, convex relaxations have been shown to provide a remarkably accurate approximate solution to this NP-hard estimation problem. In this paper, we propose a novel convex relaxation to tackle the more challenging dynamic case and we develop a moving horizon convex estimator based on a maximum a posteriori (MAP) formulation. The resulting estimator is then compared to standard extended and unscented Kalman filters both with respect to computational complexity and performance with simulated data. The results are promising, yet a more detailed analysis is needed.

In this paper, we investigate the problem of estimating the directions-of-arrival (DOAs) and ranges of multiple near-field narrowband sources impinging on a symmetric uniform linear array (ULA). By forming a Toeplitz-like correlation matrix from the anti-diagonal elements of the array covariance matrix, a convex optimization problem for the resultant Toeplitz-like matrix reconstruction is established and further a gridless sparsity-based localization for near-field sources is proposed. The DOAs can then be retrieved by using the recovered correlation matrix according to root-MUSIC or Vandermonde decomposition theorem. Additionally, the ranges are obtained through a subspace-based estimator with the corresponding estimated DOAs, while the association of the estimated DOAs and ranges are completed at the same time. Finally, the numerical examples are provided to substantiate the performance of our proposed method, and the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method provides remarkable and satisfactory estimation performance.

In this paper, a beampattern design method is proposed for the multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) system with an interleaved array. To make full use of the whole aperture, first, the transmit array is partitioned into two interleaved subarrays, one is for radar and the other is for downlink communications. Then, both the radar waveform and communication beamformers are optimized by combining the null-space projection (NSP) method and cyclic approach (CA) to perform the coexistence of MIMO radar and downlink communications. Besides, the communication beampattern can be utilized to improve the detection performance. Finally, several numerical results are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Conformal array is attractive due to its flexibility to attach to different shape of surface. However, beam pattern synthesis for conformal array to control power side lobes and different polarization components for two dimensional angle space is a challenge, especially the degree of freedom is limited. In this work, we propose a robust beam pattern synthesis formulation for conformal array based on constrained convex optimization. By penalizing the maximum gain of cross-polarization component levels, power side lobes and different polarization components are controlled in a manner that the number of constraints is no longer limited by the array DoF. The proposed formulation is a convex second-order cone programming, a computationally efficient algorithm based on the alternating directions of multipliers method is designed to solve it. Simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed formulation to synthesize a desired pattern with robustness.
