We consider the problem of using linear nested arrays to estimate the direction of arrival (DOA) of spatially distributed sources and detect the source number, where we have more sources than the actual physical sensors. Angular spread, caused by the multipath nature of distributed sources, makes the commonly used point source assumption ineffective. In this paper, we establish the signal model for distributed sources using a nested array. Due to the characteristics of distributed sources, the regular spatial smoothing technique, which is used to exploit the increased degrees of freedom provided by the co-array, no longer works. We thus propose a novel spatial smoothing approach to circumvent this problem. Based on the analytical results, we construct corresponding DOA estimation and source number detection methods. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is verified through numerical examples.

We propose a MUSIC based array imaging method for ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT) applications. We take the mode conversion phenomenon into account and develop a MUSIC-based imaging technique which exploits the additional information that is present in all propagating modes to the advantage of the imaging process-a problem not previously addressed in the context of NDT applications. Both the numerical simulations as well as data validation show that our proposed approach performs better than the traditional MUSIC based and delay-and-sum (DAS) based imaging algorithms in terms of root mean square error (RMSE) and also provides higher resolution and better side lobe suppression capabilities.

In this paper the working principle of the human eye is studied since uses very simple detectors, cones and rods, to provide an impressive high angular resolution without using any kind of scanning technique. Usually the resolution capability of the human eyes has been attributed to the complexity of the brain, but it is quite difficult to understand that something, specially small details, that it has not been seen by the eyes could be generated by the brain. Finally, it will be proved that with the actual technology and design philosophy of array antenna systems, the maximum achievable angular resolution of a realistic antenna array system is seriously limited and it is equivalent to the one that it could have an insect with compound eyes. It is clear the human eye is able to overcome this limit, and the idea is to learn how to introduce this to the design procedure of antenna array systems.

This work is concerned with direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of narrowband signals from multiple targets using a planar antenna array. We illustrate the shortcomings of Maximum Likelihood (ML), Maximum a Posteriori (MAP), and Minimum Mean Squared Error (MMSE) estimation, issues that can be attributed to the symmetry in the likelihood function that must exist when there is no information about labeling of targets. We proffer the recently introduced concept of Minimum Mean OSPA (MMOSPA) estimation that is based on the optimal sub-pattern assignment (OSPA) metric for sets and hence inherently incorporates symmetric likelihood functions.

On small platforms, angle-of-arrival (AOA) estimation of an E-M signal can be accomplished with colocated antennas measuring multiple components of the propagating wave. An electrically small Vector sensor (VS) Antenna constructed above and below the wing of a small UAV measures three components of the propagating wave. Determining the AOA involves fitting known "calibration" AOAs and corresponding antenna response to a modeled response. The least-squares calibration approach described here determines the azimuth and elevation AOAs for sources located at typical elevation angles to within a few degrees, agreeing with the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB). These results justify the use of small VS antennas to do direction finding (DF) in high SNR environments.

In this paper, we propose a method for recovering and classifying WSN data while minimizing the number of samples that need to be acquired, processed, and transmitted. The problem is formulated according to the recently proposed framework of Matrix Completion (MC), which asserts that a low rank matrix can be recovered from a small number of randomly sampled entries. The application of MC in WSN data is motivated by the assumption that sensory data exhibit intra-sensor correlations and that these data can be represented using known examples. We formulate the problem as that of recovering the low rank measurement matrix by encoding the contributions of known examples, the dictionary elements, for reconstructing and classifying the data. Experimental results using artificial data suggest that the proposed scheme is able to accurately reconstruct and classify the sensory data from a small number of measurements.

We propose a filtering method, called hierarchical particle filtering, for multi-modal sensor networks in which the unknown state vector is observed, through the measurements, in a hierarchical fashion. We partition the state space and the measurement space into lower dimensional subspaces. At each stage, we find an estimate of one partition using the measurements from the corresponding partition, and the information from the previous stages. We use hierarchical particle filtering for joint initiation, termination and tracking of multiple targets using multi-modal measurements. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed filtering method accurately identifies the number and the categories of targets, and produces a lower mean-squared error (MSE) compared to the MSE obtained using a standard particle filter.

The non-coherent source localization problem based on distributed sensor arrays can be formulated into a group sparsity based phase retrieval problem where only the magnitude (absolute value) of the received signals is available. Under such a framework, a two-dimensional localization method is proposed. Unlike traditional source localization methods, random phase errors at sensors of the distributed array will not affect estimation results by the proposed method. Simulation results indicate that the proposed non-coherent source localization method outperforms the traditional one in the presence of large phase errors, while still maintains an acceptable accuracy in the absence of phase errors.

In mobile communication, mutual coupling between array elements will affect the estimation performance of the existing direction of arrival (DOA) estimators. To tackle this problem, an accurate DOA estimation method for coprime array is developed, where the effect of mutual coupling is eliminated by the banded complex symmetric Toeplitz matrix, and further weakened via two-dimensional (2-D) interpolation. The accuracy of the proposed algorithm is verified by the simulation results in comparison of several DOA estimation approaches as well as Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB).

In this paper we focus on the energy detector for decision fusion in wireless sensor networks over multiple access channels. More specifically, we derive analytical performance in terms of global probability of false alarm and detection (including asymptotic performance for large number of sensors) when the fading is a Ricean mixture, i.e. channel coefficients are sampled from a Gaussian mixture (GM) distribution. The motivation for the GM is the ability to model real-world scenarios while keeping mathematical tractability. Analytical results are confirmed through numerical simulations.
