As an emerging array processing technique, frequency diverse array (FDA) differs from conventional phased-array in that it employs a frequency increment across the array elements. The use of frequency increment provides FDA with an array factor with joint range-angle dependency, which finds wide applications in joint range-angle target localization and range-dependent interference/clutter suppression. In the open literature, an ideal point-like target in far field is generally assumed for FDA signal modelling. However, the reflectivity characterization for more realistic targets, which are not ideally point-like and even extended in range and azimuth angle, has not been reported for FDA radar. In this paper, we establish an echo signal model of FDA radar for a general target, and then analyze the statistics of the echo signal amplitude. More specifically, we reveal the amplitude decorrelation property between different FDA elements due to the use of frequency increment, which provides useful insight into frequency increment design. The target reflectivity characteristic analysis is validated by numerical results.

Self localization of nodes in wireless sensor networks (WSN) attracts wide interest in the past few years. The main challenge is to adopt calibration algorithms to the low-power/low-bandwidth/low-cost constrains on each sensor in the network. In this paper we present a novel approach, in which position-known anchors transmit special calibration signals simultaneously. Each node measures only the received signal strength (RSSI), i.e. envelope of the sum of received signals, and estimates time difference of arrivals (TDOA) of the signals. Two or more TDOA measurements allow the node to estimate its own position in the WSN. Based on an analysis of the appropriate Cramer Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) on the TDOA estimates, we suggest the choice of calibrating signals which provide optimal performance. The theoretical results are supported by simulations of the Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimators and numerical evaluation of the CRLB for a specific scenario of interest.

We present a deep reinforcement learning approach to design an automotive radar system with integrated sensing and communication. In the proposed system, sparse transmit arrays with quantized phase shifter are used to carry out transmit beamforming to enhance the performance of both radar sensing and communication. Through interaction with environment, the automotive radar learns a reward that reflects the difference between mainlobe peak and the peak sidelobe level in radar sensing mode or communication user feedback in communication mode, and intelligently adjust its beamforming vector. The Wolpertinger policy based actioncritic network is introduced for beamforming vector learning, which solves the dimension curse due to huge beamforming action space.

Position solutions provided by Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) can be completely misled by structural interference or spoofing threats. An approach utilizing an antenna array is proposed in order to suppress spoofing attacks. The proposed method is based on the assumption that all spoofing signals are transmitted from a single point source. A spatial domain processing technique is proposed to extract the spoofing signal steering vector and consequently to discard the spoofing signals. This method is implemented before despreading and acquisition stage of a GNSS receiver. Hence, it does not impose a heavy computational load on the receiver operational process since it does not require any extensive search in the code and Doppler domains to separately despread individual authentic and spoofing signals. Moreover, the proposed method does not require any antenna array calibration process. This pre-despreading interference mitigation technique is further extended to maximize signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of each individual authentic GNSS signal. Simulation results show that the proposed method effectively countermeasures spoofing attacks for a wide range of received spoofing power.

Frequency-diverse array (FDA) can provide a range-angle-time dependent beamforming capability that could make a difference in some radar applications. However, the joint range-angle estimation of FDA will inevitably increase the complexity due to the coupling range and angle response. Estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT) algorithm cannot be used directly to estimate the angle and range because it does not meet the rotation invariance criterion. In this paper, an ambiguity function (AF)-based method is proposed to avoid the coupling range and angle problem for the FDA and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) combined radar to realize high-resolution range and angle estimation. Numerical results show its advantages over conventional method.

Many threats in the form of human actions (terrorist attacks, military actions, etc.) can be stochastically modeled by someone with relevant expert knowledge. In this work, a threat is taken to be a sequence of actions that evolve over time and culminate at some ultimate goal. A model would be a hypothesis as to how a threat would develop, and what kind of observable evidence it would produce along the way. This modeling method allows us to attempt detection using the preliminary evidence of a threat. This would theoretically allow the user to take preemptive action;i.e. the user can interfere with the threat before its culmination. This work presents a method of stochastically modeling these types of processes using Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). We then present a detection scheme based on random finite set (RFS) filters (Bernoulli filters) that allows for detection of multiple threat processes using a single cluttered stream of observed data.

The eigenbeam-ESPRIT (EB-ESPRIT) is well known as a high-resolution parametric direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation technique for a spherical microphone array. Unlike other eigenbeam beamformers such as EB-MVDR and EB-MUSIC, there is no need for exhaustive grid-search with EB-ESPRIT. However, when sources are positioned near the equator, the EB-ESPRIT inevitably induces a singularity problem due to the singularity of its tangent function utilized as a directional parameter. Here, a new EB-ESPRIT technique based on a nonsingular directional parameter is proposed. The proposed technique is derived from two sine-based recurrence relations, and hence, can fundamentally avoid the singularity problems and identify more sources than the conventional EB-ESPRIT.

Performing surgery on the beating heart has significant advantages for the patient compared to traditional heart surgery on the stopped heart. A remote-controlled robot can be used to automatically cancel out the movement of the beating heart. This necessitates precise tracking of the heart surface. For this purpose, we track 24 identical artificial markers placed on the heart. This creates a data association problem, because it is not known which measurement was obtained from which marker. To solve this problem, we apply a multiple target tracking method based on a symmetric kernel transformation. This method allows efficient handling of the data association problem even for a reasonably large number of targets. We demonstrate how to implement this method efficiently. The proposed approach is evaluated on in-vivo data of a real beating heart surgery performed on a porcine beating heart.

The effect of mutual coupling among the antenna elements will degrade the performance of array signal processing methods, and hence, mutual coupling calibration has attracted many research interests. However, existing approaches to deal with this problem either require the angular information of the calibration source(s) or require computationally expensive procedures to determine the mutual coupling coefficients. To this end, we propose an efficient method to calibrate the mutual coupling with a single source at unknown location. In particular, by exploiting the fact that mutual coupling is inversely related to their separation and is negligible when they are separated by a few wavelengths and the mutual coupling matrix (MCM) of uniform linear array (ULA) can be approximated as a banded symmetric matrix, it is shown that both the signal direction-of-arrival (DOA) and mutual coupling coefficients can be estimated in closed-form without any spectral grid search. Simulation results indicate that the proposed methods is able to provide promising performance compared with existing approaches.

In this paper we address a new approach to solving the radar imaging problems stated and treated as ill-posed inverse problems of restoration of the spatial spectrum pattern of the wavefield sources distributed in the environment by processing the radar data signals distorted in the stochastic measurement channel. By exploiting the idea of combining the experiment design (ED) and descriptive regularization (R) theory methods for scattering inverse problems solution we propose a fused experiment-design-regularization (EDR) technique for radar image formation. With this technique we present the EDR-based interpretation of a family of the conventional array imaging algorithms and propose some their modifications to enhance the resolution performances of the resulting radar images.
