Early detection of fall risk in homes and assisted living facilities is essential in preventing debilitating injuries and improving the quality of life of older adults. Several studies have found increased gait variability among community-living older adults with a history of falls. Quantitative 3D gait analysis in laboratories equipped with motion capture devices can be used to record and extract stride-to-stride gait fluctuations that are indicative of fall risk. Such facilities are very expensive, may not be easily accessible for aging and rural communities. Wearable sensors are a cheaper alternative to observe gait in natural settings;however, it can suffer from drift or other inaccuracies. RF sensors can be a game changer to reduce healthcare costs and disparities, improve quality of care, and facilitate aging-inplace by enabling frequent estimation of gait variability in natural settings. In particular, multi-channel frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar can be used to characterize gait and detect gait abnormalities. In this paper, multi-channel FMCW radar is used to measure gait dynamics in terms of steptime variability. The accuracy of RF measurements is validated via comparison with gold standards, such as the Vicon motion capture camera system. Step-time variability was compared for both normal walking and walking during visual perturbations generated through the use of a virtual reality headset. The accuracy of RF measurement is evaluated for single and multiple channel processing. Our results demonstrate that multi-channel RF sensors can be an effective tool for gait variability assessment in natural, in-home settings.

We analyze a binary hypothesis testing problem built on a wireless sensor network (WSN). Using Large Deviation Theory (LDT), we compute the probability error exponents of a distributed scheme for detecting a correlated circularly-symmetric complex Gaussian process under the Neyman-Pearson framework. Using an analog scheme, the sensors transmit scaled versions of their measurements several times through a multiple access channel (MAC) to reach the fusion center (FC), whose task is to decide whether the process is present or not. In the analysis, we consider the energy constraint on each node transmission. We show that the proposed distributed scheme requires relatively few MAC channel uses to achieve the centralized error exponents when detecting correlated Gaussian processes. © 2014 ieee.

In this work, we assess the performance of a Uniform Circular array featuring a reduced number of sensors and using small sample support comprised of only a few snapshots. We begin by analyzing the limitations of the phase-mode transformation in the context of a uniform circular array with a reduced number of sensors. Next, we address the challenging issue of having limited sample support, followed by a brief discussion of the techniques that can be used to mitigate the degradation caused by the two aforementioned problems. Several experiments are conducted to evaluate the DoA estimation performance of narrowband acoustic signals in different scenarios, having water as propagating media.

This work investigates the distributed detection of carbon dioxide (CO2) release from storage tanks caused by the opening of pressure relief devices via inexpensive sensor devices in an industrial context. A realistic model of the dispersion is put forward in this paper. Both full-precision and rate-limited setups for sensors are considered, and fusion rules capitalizing the dispersion model are derived. Simulations analyze the performance trends with relevant system parameters.

We study channel-aware binary decision fusion over a Rayleigh flat fading shared channel with multiple antennas at the Decision Fusion Center (DFC). We derive the optimum and three sub-optimal fusion rules, namely the Max-Log, the Chair-Varshney - Maximum Likelihood and the Maximum Ratio Combining rules. Simulation results for the performance are presented in terms of Probability of Detection (under a fixed false alarm rate) vs SNR and number of antennas. The effect of multiple antennas at the DFC for the presented rules is analyzed, showing benefits and limitations of the choice. © 2012 ieee.

Single- and dual-polarized arrays are used for direction-of-arrival estimation. In this paper, we present a generalized framework describing the spatio-polarimetric correlation properties of both types of arrays. It is shown that adding polarization capability to an existing array allows reduction in the source correlation beyond that achieved by only doubling the number of antennas, especially when the sources are closely spaced. ©2004 ieee.

We propose a space-time compressive sampling (STCS) array architecture by exploiting the sparsity in the angle and frequency domain. Two Doppler-DoA estimation methods are designed to efficiently reconstruct the two-dimensional (2D) sparse signal. The STCS array together with the 2D reconstruction methods allow for accurate yet low-power location and speed estimation of moving targets. The proposed methods are not only tested by simulations but also using an experimental ultrasonic sensor array setup. © 2010 ieee.

A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can be used to improve the channel gain between a base station (BS) and user equipment (UE), but only if its N reflecting elements are configured properly. This requires accurate estimation of the cascaded channel from the UE to the BS through each RIS element. If the channel structure is not exploited, pilot sequences of length N must be used, which is a major practical challenge since N is typically at the order of hundreds. To address this problem without requiring user-specific channel statistics, we propose a novel estimator, called reduced-subspace least squares (RS-LS) estimator, that only uses knowledge of the array geometry. The RIS phase-shift pattern is optimized to minimize the mean-square error of the channel estimates. The RS-LS estimator largely outperforms the conventional leastsquares estimator, and can be utilized with a much shorter pilot length since it exploits the fact that the array geometry confines the possible channel realizations to a reduced-rank subspace.

A coprime sensor array (CSA) estimates the spatial power spectral density (PSD) of the observed signal by multiplying one conventionally beamformed subarray scanned response with the complex conjugate of the other. This product processor removes the CSA subarray spatial aliasing ambiguities, but has a peak sidelobe higher than the peak sidelobe of a fully populated uniform linear array (ULA). Moreover, the resulting PSD estimate is not necessarily positive semi-definite. This paper proposes choosing the minimum of the two CSA subarray scanned responses at each bearing to resolve the spatial aliasing ambiguities. The min processor achieves lower peak sidelobe height and total sidelobe area than the product processor and preserves the positive semi-definite property of the PSD. This paper presents closed form expressions for the first two moments of the CSA min PSD estimator. Simulation results show the min processor achieves a lower PSD estimate variance than the product processor while maintaining the same array resolution. © 2016 ieee.

This paper concerns the problem of estimating the array element relative gain and phase responses using sources of opportunity in an uncertain multipath environment. Unlike previous methods, which assume uncorrelated source wavefronts, we propose to perform calibration in a correlated multipath environment. We present two algorithms that apply traditional blind, single input multiple output (SIMO) methods to the array calibration problem. Calibration is performed by discriminating the received components which remain the same for all sources and are thus due to the receiver gains and phases. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of both techniques in terms of reduced sidelobe levels.
