One of the applications of advanced array signal processing is immersion ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT), where a solid test sample and an array of transducers are immersed in water, for the purpose of imaging the test sample. To do so, the knowledge of the shape of the upper surface of the test sample is needed. We model the interface between water and the solid as an incoherently spatially distributed reflector. We then develop a covariance fitting based approach to estimate the parameters of the shape of the upper surface of the test sample. With the knowledge of the estimated shape of this surface, we use the same approach to estimate the parameters of the shape of a crack inside the test sample. Numerical simulations are conducted to show the accuracy of the proposed approach.

This paper develops a closed-form solution that improves the projection matrix method for time of arrival (TOA) source localization in the presence of sensor position inaccuracy. The projection approach is attractive because it does not require the use of an extra variable as in the traditional closed-form solution. Compared with the previous projection method, the proposed algorithm offers a closed-form solution and at the same time attains the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) performance for Gaussian noise over the small noise region. The performance of the proposed method is validated by simulations.

We consider the distributed detection of a zero-mean Gaussian signal in an analog wireless sensor network with a fusion center (FC) configured with a large number of antennas. The transmission gains of the sensor nodes are optimized by minimizing the ratio of the log probability of detection (PD) and log probability of false alarm (PFA). We show that the problem is convex with respect to the squared norm of the transmission gains, and that a closed-form solution can be found using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions. Our results indicate that a constant PD can be maintained with decreasing sensor transmit gain provided that the number of antennas increases at the same rate. This is contrasted with the case of a singleantenna FC, where PD is monotonically decreasing with transmit gain. On the other hand, we show that when the transmit power is high, the single- and multi-antenna FC both asymptotically achieve the same PD upper bound.

Conventional subspace based direction finding approaches such as MUSIC and ESPRIT algorithms commonly use the array data covariance matrix. In non stationary context, the use of the Spatial Time-Frequency Distribution (STFD) instead of the covariance matrix can significantly improve the performance of such algorithms. In this paper we are interested in the performance analysis of such approaches in the presence of both additive noise and perturbed array manifold. An unified expression of the Direction Of Arrival (DOA) error estimation is derived for both approaches. The obtained results show that for low signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and high signal to sensor Perturbation Ratio (SPR) the STFD based DOA estimations perform better, while for high SNR and for the same SPR both Covariance and STFD based approaches have similar performance.

The estimation of directions of arrival is formulated as the decomposition of a 3-way array into a sum of rank-one terms. However, a low-rank tensor approximation does not always exist. We propose an optimization technique based on differentiable angular constraints on the factors, ensuring the existence of the low-rank tensor decomposition. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated via numerical simulations, and compared to Cramér-Rao bounds.

A coprime array consists of two uniform linear subarrays that construct an effective difference co-array with certain desirable characteristics. In this paper, we propose a generalized coprime array concept through the compression of the interelement spacing of one constituting subarray. As such, the existing variations of coprime array and nested array structures are represented as special cases. The achievable unique lags as well as consecutive lags in the resulting virtual array are analytically expressed, and the direction-of-arrival estimation performance is examined using both the MUSIC algorithm and sparse signal reconstruction techniques.

A signal processing algorithm for estimating the direction of arrival of a harmonic signal using only a single sensor is proposed. The method is based on the recently invented architecture called CAROUSEL, which makes use of the Doppler effect caused by observing signals using the sensor in a circular motion. The proposed method estimates the direction of arrival from the amount of phase shift of a harmonic component caused by the Doppler effect. Simulation using various harmonic signals including synthesised speech phonemes prove the proposed algorithm is able to accurately estimate the direction of arrival of the harmonic signals.

The fact that most of high-accuracy positioning and distributed timing services, including safety-critical operations, rely on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) has raised the concern of possible denial-of-service situations. Complementary to time- and frequency-domain mitigation techniques, it is well known that antenna-array based receivers can benefit from spatial domain processing and effectively mitigate unintentional and intentional Radio Frequency Interferences (RFIs). In this work, we propose a software-based GNSS receiver architecture that implements a real-time, array-based signal acquisition algorithm based on the Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test, combined with a null-steering spatial filter for signal tracking, showing its RFI rejection capabilities.

A novel convex optimization problem formulation for source localization using partly calibrated arrays composed of subarrays with unknown displacements is introduced. The proposed formulation is based on sparse reconstruction using a mixed trace- and ℓ 1 -norm minimization and exploits joint sparsity and special structure in the signal model. The new technique is applicable to subarrays of arbitrary topologies and allows the joint estimation of the directions of arrival (DoAs) and the array calibration. As shown by simulations, our new DoA estimation technique outperforms the state of the art method RARE, especially in low number of snapshot and low signal-to-noise ratio regime.

In this paper, we combine concepts from synthetic aperture processing and non-uniform linear array theory. Our objective is to use array motion to synthesize an array that can achieve the performance of a filled uniform linear array (ULA), but with fewer sensors than required for spatial Nyquist sampling. The class of physical arrays we use for synthesis are co-prime arrays constructed by nesting under-sampled ULA's with co-prime inter-element spacings. In particular, we use array motion to fill in missing co-array spacings. For co-prime M and N, a physical array of M + 2N - 1 sensors plus modest array motion is used to achieve a filled co-array corresponding to approximately 2MN elements. This facilitates spatial spectral estimation via non-adaptive beamforming over an extended aperture with low sidelobe performance.
