In this paper, we derive a closed form necessary and sufficient condition under which rank r multichannel beamforming achieves the capacity of a single user spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channel which employs multiple transmit antennas and a single receive antenna. It is assumed that the receiver has perfect channel side information (CSIR) while the transmitter only knows the channel distribution (CDIT). Additionally, a set of r independent closed form equation is derived that gives the r non-zero eigenvalues of transmit covariance associated to transmit power along each mode.

The performance of most existing array processing algorithms relies heavily on the precise knowledge of array manifold, which is decided by individual sensor characteristics and array configuration. A major challenge for self-calibration techniques is the increased computational burden due to additional perturbation parameters. In this contribution, a novel procedure for array self-calibration is presented. We apply the well known numerical method, the Space Alternating Generalized EM algorithm (SAGE), to simplify the multi-dimensional search procedure required for finding maximum likelihood (ML) estimates. Simulation shows that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing methods that are based on the small perturbation assumption. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm remain robust in critical scenarios including large sensor position errors and closely located signals.

We address the problem of sparse planar array design. Based on the theory of minimum redundancy arrays, we recently proposed an iterative algorithm that is capable to design highly thinned arrays with a low side-lobe level while retaining the half-power-beam-width of uniform arrays. In this paper, we analyze the effect of kernel bandwidth and compare the approach to a recent paper by Kopilovich which is based on the family of Hadamard difference sets. The results show that the proposed method achieves similar performance with a substantially lower amount of array elements. Side-Lobe-Levels are comparable to the ones from uniform arrays and only slightly higher than for Hadamard-based arrays.

We consider a calibration problem, where we determine an unknown sensor location using the known track of a calibration target and a known reference sensor location. We cast the calibration problem as a sparse approximation problem where the unknown sensor location is determined over a discrete spatial grid with respect to the reference sensor. To achieve the calibration objective, low dimensional random projections of the sensor data are passed to the reference sensor, which significantly reduces the inter-sensor communication bandwidth. The unknown sensor location is then determined by solving an l{sub}1-norm minimization problem (linear program). Field data results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

A permutation problem arises in the case of locating multiple speech sources using several sensor arrays in the far field. The intersection of different direction of arrival (DOA) estimates between sensor arrays leads to a set of real source locations as well as a set of false intersections. This paper presents a novel method for pairing DOA estimates from different sensor arrays, resulting in the corresponding real intersection points. The algorithm presented is numerically efficient and suitable for real time implementations. Real room recordings are used to evaluate the method.

In this paper, we present a new application of the likelihood ratio test to solve the problem of enumeration and localization of multiple emitters (sources) with a uniform linear antenna array in a multi-path environment. First, spatial smoothing is applied to the antenna array data to decorrelate signals corresponding to each path in the estimated correlation matrix and the number of paths is then counted using an information theoretic criterion. Then, MUSIC is applied with this correlation matrix to estimate the angle of arrival of all possible incident paths. In our signal model, we assume that the correlation between signals from two paths is one if they originate from the same source but zero if they are from different sources. The likelihood ratio test is then applied to each path pair using this correlation model and the angles of arrival estimated by MUSIC in order to find out if the path pair originates from the same emitter, and hence the number of emitters and their angles of arrival are estimated. The proposed algorithm on the likelihood ratio test is compared with the correlation coefficient algorithm based on minimum variance beamforming with a performance analysis.

A broadband beamspace adaptive beamforming structure for rectangular arrays is proposed. A set of frequency invariant beams are formed pointing to different directions and only one weight is attached to each of the beam outputs. Due to the greatly reduced number of adaptive weights, the system can achieve a much faster convergence speed. Compared to the existing broadband beamspace adaptive methods, the advantage of the proposed method is that there is no temporal processing of the received sensor signals, such as the tapped delay-lines or IIR/FIR filters. Therefore it is a system employing spatial-only information.

Higher Order Statistics (HOS) have been proposed to achieve improvements over second order statistics array processing for various applications. We investigate the potential for angle estimation and source resolution with a very small planar array with 3 elements. We use the MUSIC method as generic DOA estimator. Using standard array theory we evaluate conditions under which an improvement in resolution can be obtained. A critical feature is the higher sensitivity of HOS methods to sources of unequal power. In this case standard MUSIC can perform better. A parallel complementary use of both methods is therefore recommended.

The problem of optimal node density for ad hoc sensor networks deployed for making inferences about two dimensional correlated random fields is considered. Using a symmetric first order conditional autoregressive Gauss-Markov random field model, large deviations results are used to characterize the asymptotic per-node information gained from the array. This result then allows an analysis of the node density that maximizes the information under an energy constraint, yielding insights into the trade-offs among the information, density and energy.

We propose a scalable and energy efficient method for reconstructing a dasiasparsepsila Gauss-Markov random field that is observed by an array of sensors and described over wireless channels to a fusion center. The encoder is universal, i.e. invariant to the statistical model of the source and the channel, and is based on compressed sensing. The reconstruction algorithms exploit the a-priori statistical information about the field and the channel at the fusion center to yield a performance comparable to information theoretic bounds. Furthermore, by putting stringent constraints on the sensing matrix we avoid (or even eliminate) inter-sensor communication while suffering negligible degradation in performance.
