The presence of measurement noise and model uncertainties in sensor arrays and the lack of statistical information poses several challenges for development of effective and robust algorithms for the Direction-of-Arrival (DOA) estimation problem in array processing. In this paper, we will investigate the improvements that are achievable in the DOA estimation problem by properly alleviating uncertainty effects through the application of robust H ∞ filtering techniques as a pre-processing stage. The proposed methodology is implemented for a wideband DOA estimation approach that is based on the Incoherent Wideband MUSIC (IWM) algorithm. Comparisons with and without robust filtering algorithm are also presented. ©2004 ieee.

In this paper, an improved ultrasonic system for detection of falling objects or alive beings intrusion in railways is presented. The basic ultrasonic array sensor is composed of four emitters and six receivers and can be easily extended to a higher coverage area repeating this elementary structure. The receivers are able to distinguish among the signals coming from the four different emitters thanks to the signal coding with complementary sets of sequences, which also gives to the reception module an excellent process gain. The signal processing has been accomplished by means of the Efficient Set of Sequences Correlator which has been recently developed by the authors. © 2004 ieee.

Wavefield Modeling is a formalism for array processing based on expressing the output of a sensors' array as a product of a wavefieId-independent sampling matrix and an array-independent coefficient vector. This approach turns out to be very useful in practical algorithms for array processing and direction finding, such as the MUSIC and Root-MUSIC algorithms;specifically, it yields an extension of the MUSIC and Root-MUSIC algorithms to general 2D arrays. A numerical study of those two direction finding methods in the case of closely-spaced radiatng sources, shows that the resolution capability of Root-MUSIC is less sensitive than MUSIC to calibration errors in the sensors' gains. ©2004 ieee.

This work describes a sensor array based on optical emitters, which allows to detect obstacles in railways. The sensorial system consists of a barrier of emitters and another of receivers, placed at opposite sides of the railway. Apart from the disposition of the sensorial system, it is necessary a codification method for the emission in order to detect the reception or the non-reception of transmissions between an emitter and a receiver. The method is based on a signal codification using complementary sequence pairs, suitably adapted for their simultaneous emission through the transmission channel. A high reliability under adverse conditions is achieved with the developed system, being possible to detect the presence of obstacles, and to inform about their situation. ©2004 ieee.

In this paper, we first present a new criterion for nonlinear principal component analysis (PCA) available for blind source separation (BSS) of convolutive mixture. Then we derive a novel recursive least square (RLS) algorithm for time-domain BSS. Although several existing methods of time-domain BSS can avoid the indeterminacy of permutation and gain which makes the BSS problem difficult in frequency domain, they generally converge slowly. The proposed new algorithm has fast convergence. The simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of our algorithm. ©2004 ieee.

The space-time adaptive processing (STAP) technique was originally conceived to suppress clutter (and jamming) received by radar on board moving platforms such as aircraft;this was so because of the clutter ridge in the Doppler frequency and angle (spatial frequency) plane. In fact, the clutter echoes appear coupled in angle and Doppler frequency. When the platform is stationary this coupling does not exist anymore. However, the STAP technique still seems valuable when clutter and jamming are present and their statistical features are not known a priori. This paper demonstrates this statement by showing results concerning the processing of recorded live data. It also tackles the problem of selecting an algorithm to work in a nonstationary, nonhomogeneous environment. ©2004 ieee.

Standard beamforming designs are typically based on narrowband transmissions and narrow angle spread scenarios. In this situation, pointing a narrow beam towards the main reflector is a suitable strategy for transmit beamforming in order to minimize interuser interference while a wider beam should be introduced in receiving applications in order to increase signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). In both cases, design is based on beamformer concepts where distribution of array gain for different angles is a good description. However, in MultiCarrier (MC) transmissions through wide angle spread channels, phase shift between different antennas for all the carriers provide a more suitable description for the array gain concept. In this paper we will describe this procedure for MC-CDMA as a candidate for B3G (Beyond 3G) mobile application analysing different alternatives if Channel State Information (CSI) is assumed or partial CSI has to be considered. © 2004 ieee.

This paper presents a unifying method called TIME-MUSIC for high-resolution Direction Of Arrival estimation of statistically independent complex narrowband signals in noise with a planar sensor array of arbitrary geometry. It is based on the exploitation of an arbitrary-order temporal structure in the data by cumulants. A MUSIC-like spatial pseudo-spectrum is computed that exhibits peaks at the source directions of arrival. The theory is unifying in several senses. Firstly, it is general with respect to the order of the exploited temporal structure. Secondly, all types of statistical variability in the data, such as arbitrary-order nonstationarity and nonwhiteness, are incorporated into the problem formulation in a unified manner. Finally, the conjugation pattern of the arguments of the involved cumulant functions can be chosen arbitrarily. In practice, this should be done in accordance with the characteristics of the involved signals. Depending on the number of sensors, the order of the exploited temporal structure, and the chosen conjugation pattern, a large number of source directions can be determined that exceeds the number of sensors for orders larger than one. ©2004 ieee.

Ultrasonic ranging sensor using simultaneous emissions from different transducers

In recent applications based on ultrasound, several ultrasonic transducers have been geometrically and electronically associated to constitute a global sensor. There are several different methods used to process the ultrasonic signals obtained from these transducers. In this work, multimode techniques using Golay complementary sequences are proposed for processing the ultrasonic signal. The system increases scan rate, precision, and reliability. It is also capable of echo discrimination, allowing simultaneous measurements to be made and detection of the same obstacle by different transducers without cross-talk problems. The real-time implementation of the algorithm is presented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) device.

This paper is concerned with a new accelerated RLS adaptive beamforming algorithm applied to fast moving mobile terminals. The proposed algorithm is based on the internal model principle by approximately expressing the parameter changes in terms of polynomial time functions, and can rapidly track the multipath fading environment. We show that the amount of calculation of the proposed algorithm is almost the same as that of the ordinary RLS adaptive beam-forming, and its effectiveness is examined in numerical simulations.
