In this work, we present interesting case studies that lead to new and deeper results on fast convergence of reduced-rank conjugate gradient (RRCG) Wiener filters (WF), for applications in communications and sensor array signal processing. We discover that for signal modes with a specially structured Gram matrix, which induces L groups of distinct eigenvalues in the data covariance matrix, a fast and predictable convergence, in at most L steps, can be achieved when the RRCG WF is used to detect, and/or to focus on, the desired signal mode. For such applications, given knowledge of the repeated eigenstructure of the Gram matrix of signal modes or of the measurement covariance matrix, a RRCG Wiener filter, of at most rank L, delivers the same performance as the full-rank Wiener filter. Typically L is much less than the rank of the Gram matrix.

The primary issue in downlink beamforming for wireless communications is how to balance the need for high received signal power for each user against the interference produced by the signal at other points in the network. In this paper, we describe several approaches to this problem: channel inversion, regularized channel inversion, vector modulo pre-coding, channel block diagonalization and coordinated transmit/receive beamforming. While the basic idea behind these algorithms is the same, namely the use of channel information at the transmitter to predict and then counteract the interference produced at each node in the network, each of the algorithms is based on achieving a different performance objective. We compare the various goals of the above algorithms, and detail their respective advantages and disadvantages in terms of computational complexity, required transmit power, network throughput, and assumed receiver capabilities. The results of several simulation studies are presented to quantify these comparisons.

In this paper we propose a wide-band direction-of-arrival estimation method that relies in the assumption that the sources are autoregressive. A matrix formulation is introduced in the frequency domain so that all available information from the sources can be incorporated thus allowing a new insight in the estimation process. We show that it is possible to deal with different sources regardless the closeness of their center frequency and their relative location. By incorporating the AR coefficients of each source the scope of possibilities is opened. This allows to resolve close sources with quite a few number of sensors. Indeed, bearing estimations can be done with fewer sensors than sources. In the experiments we explore the potential applications of our method in real situations where it is needed to resolve close sources that share the same frequency band and the number of sensors at disposal is low.

This report presents a technique for multichannel electrode of penetrating Si microprobe array with on-chip integrated circuits (ICs) for use in neuroscience and biomedical engineering. Penetrating microelectrodes can be used for multipoint neural recording as well as stimulation for neurons located in the neuronal tissue. Penetrating Si probes were successfully fabricated at predetermined sites on ICs by a selective vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) Si growth. The length of the Si probe was controlled in the VLS growth, which allowed required length with same diameter of. one neuron or less for in-vivo study. On-chip ICs was realized in order to site-selection for many probes. The Si probes on the circuits were spaced on 100 mum in the array, which can provide a high-density multichannel penetrating electrode.

The problem of detecting the number of sources impinging on an array of sensors has received wide interest in many research problems. In particular, the detection of the number of distinct neural sources using a recording array of closely spaced sensors in the brain is one such application. The special case of transient source signals of unknown waveforms corrupted by Gaussian noise is the focus of this paper. We propose a new approach for solving this problem when no a priori knowledge is given about the neural sources and/or the noise processes. By extending our previous array multiresolution analysis framework for noise suppression, signal detection and identification (Oweiss and Anderson (2000, 2001, 2002)), we show that it is feasible to achieve reasonable source detection performance in moderate to low SNR scenarios.

Constant modulus algorithms try to separate linear mixtures of sources with modulus 1. We study the identifiability of this problem: the number of samples needed to ensure that in the noiseless case we have a unique solution. For finite alphabet (L-PSK) sources, finite sample identifiability can hold only with a probability close to but not equal to 1. In a previous paper (Leshem, A. et al., Proc. ieee workshop on sensor array and multichannel signal processing, 2002), we provided a subexponentially decaying upper bound on the probability of non-identifiability. Here, we provide an improved exponentially decaying upper bound, based on Chernoff bounds. We show that, under practical assumptions, this upper bound is much tighter than previously known bounds.

This paper describes the use of voice activity defector (VAD) in microphone array processing for hand-free systems. Two different types of VAD are proposed using conventional and adaptive beamforming. Taking into account the fact that the speech signal is not present at all time in human conversations, both signal of interest and noise can be better estimated. Simulation results show that the VAD significantly improves the performance of the array processing algorithms. The performances of the two types of VAD are also compared in the paper.

In this paper, the performance of a subspace beamformer, namely the multiple signal classification algorithm (MUSIC), is scrutinized in the presence of sensor position errors. Based on a perturbation model, a relationship between the array autocorrelation matrix and the source autocorrelation matrix is established. It is shown that under certain assumptions on the source signals, the Gaussian sensor perturbation errors can be modelled as additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) for an array where sensor positions are known perfectly. This correspondence can be used to equate position errors to an equivalent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for AWGN in performance evaluation. Finally, Cramer-Rao bound for the position perturbations that can be computed using the Cramer-Rao bound relations for the additive Gaussian noise case at high SNR's.
