A method of direction finding for FM signals based on averaged spatial time-frequency distributions is presented. This technique has been applied previously to algorithms such as MUSIC and maximum likelihood (ML). However, these estimation techniques do not take full advantage of the underlying diagonal structure of the source matrices. It is demonstrated that, by using the direction estimation for uncorrelated emitters (DEUCE) algorithm (Jansson, M. et al., ieee Trans. Sig. processing, vol.47, no.4, p.945-56, 1999), we can improve the performance in estimating the source directions. To use this approach, knowledge of the source auto-term locations on the time-frequency plane is required. In the absence of prior knowledge about the time-frequency signatures of the sources, an automatic point selection procedure is incorporated. The proposed scheme is demonstrated to yield results close to the optimal case of known auto-term locations.

This paper deals with the estimation of celerity and coherence time using array of equispaced sensors for observing the ocean surface. A fast algorithm based on array processing or spatial analysis is proposed. Initially, two-antenna synthetic aperture radars (SAR) system are used in order to obtain two images of the same surface of the ocean afterwards the analysis of these images by using the signal processing or spectral analysis leads to estimate phase difference between the images and finally the mean short-term Doppler shift of the scattering from the ocean surface is estimated on pixel by pixel basis. To improve velocity and time coherence estimation the multiple antenna system is introduced in SAR system. Indeed, the use of more than two-antennas allows to develop statistical methods or multidimensional signal processing algorithms. Interesting studies, in which the blind maximum likelihood algorithms are used, have been published. Its performance is proved to be more accurate than the two-antenna SAR system based methods. The proposed algorithm is based on the second order statistics of the received data. Both the correlation and the coherence matrices are used for estimating the noise power, the spatial correlation matrix of the speckle and the coherence time of the ocean surface.

The paper deals with maximum likelihood (ML) direction of arrival (DOA) estimation of multiple moving sources. The time-varying DOAs are described by a linear polynomial. Based on the recursive EM algorithm, we develop a recursive procedure to estimate the coefficients of the corresponding polynomial. Because of the simple structure of the augmented data, the resulting recursion has a very simple implementation. Compared to the recursive algorithm developed by L. Frenkel and M. Feder (see ieee Trans. Sig. processing, vol.47, no.2, p.306-20, 1999), our approach has the advantage of being insensitive to signal variations. In addition, extension to the wideband case is straightforward. Simulation results show that closely spaced signals can be successfully tracked by the proposed method.

This paper examines the underwater acoustic source localization problem as an unorthodox communication problem. This perspective produces novel bounds on the performance of any source localization algorithm. The search space is divided into a grid whose cell size is determined by operational constraints. The message transmitted by the source is the cell it is located within. The receiver uses pressure observations from a sensor array to receive this message with a minimum probability of error. A necessary condition to choose the correct grid cell with arbitrarily small positive probability of error is that the mutual information between the source location and the estimate of it must equal or exceed the entropy of the grid. This mutual information can be bounded from above using the Gaussian channel approximation. The source channel coding theorem then determines the minimum necessary SNR to achieve a desired range resolution, or equivalently the best possible range resolution for a given SNR, assuming arbitrarily small probability of error. The resulting resolution bound is discussed in comparison to the Cramer-Rao Bound. The resolution bound is computed for typical underwater environments, and Monte-Carlo experiments are presented for these same environments.

A novel sensor network source localization method based on acoustic energy measurements is presented. This method makes use of the characteristics that the acoustic energy decays exponentially with respect to the distance from an omni-directional acoustic source. By comparing energy readings measured at surrounding acoustic sensors during the same time interval can be accurately estimated. We show that the potential target location is restricted to a hyper-sphere in the sensor field given the acoustic energy reading at a pair of sensors. Given multiple sensor acoustic energy readings, the target location is solved as the location that is closest (in the least square sense) to all the corresponding hyper-spheres. We further simplified this nonlinear least square problem to an unconstrained linear least square problem that yields a closed form solution. Experiment results using military vehicle acoustic data show great promise of this novel approach.

This paper concerns the problem of estimating the array element relative gain and phase responses using sources of opportunity in an uncertain multipath environment. Unlike previous methods, which assume uncorrelated source wavefronts, we propose to perform calibration in a correlated multipath environment. We present two algorithms that apply traditional blind, single input multiple output (SIMO) methods to the array calibration problem. Calibration is performed by discriminating the received components which remain the same for all sources and are thus due to the receiver gains and phases. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of both techniques in terms of reduced sidelobe levels.

This paper presents an integrated systolic array design for implementing full-search block matching, 2-D discrete wavelet transform, and full-search vector quantization on the same VLSI architecture. The above three functions are prime essential but with large amount of computation in video compression. To meet real-time requirement, many systolic arrays are designed for individually performing each of them. In fact, these functions contain the similar computational procedure. The matrix-vector product forms of them are quite similar. In this paper, with carefully extracting the common computation component, an integrated systolic array design that can perform above three functions is presented. A utilization of 100% to 97% is achieved for executing full-search block matching and full-search vector quantization. When performing 2-D discrete wavelet transform, the utilization is about 32%. The proposed integrated architecture spends lower hardware cost and has a regular hardware structure. It befits the VLSI implementation for video compression.

A problem occurring in radio astronomy is the detection and cancellation of spatially correlated interfering signals entering via the sidelobes of the telescopes in an array. A complicating factor is that the noise powers can be different at each telescope. For the case that the sensors are uncalibrated, we formulate the detection problem as a test on the covariance structure, state the GLRT for this problem, and relate it to a simpler ad-hoc detector. We derive algorithms to estimate the noise powers and the subspace of interferer signature vectors. Once the subspace is estimated, the interference can be projected out. We compare this method to the conventional multichannel subspace detector and show its robustness to non-identical channels on data collected with the Westerbork radio telescope.
