The importance of air transportation in everyday's life has increased dramatically, in the last few years. Among the consequences of the growing demand for air-related services, the need of assuring an exact and timely flight arrival has become a crucial factor, both for safety and economical reasons. At the same time, broadcasting antennas, radio links and cellular telephone base stations demand continuously increasing spaces around airports, representing a source of disturbing interference for radio-navigation systems. An improved instrumental landing system (ILS) receiver based on array processing concepts is proposed for safer automatic landing procedures. The new approach is based on direction of arrival (DOA) estimation performed by the UN-MUSIC algorithm. The superior performance of the proposed system with respect to currently employed techniques in the presence of unwanted interferences has been tested in extensive computer simulations.

A windowed local polynomial approximation (LPA) of time-varying directions-of-arrival (DOA) is exploited to derive a new form of beamformer for source localization and tracking in highly nonstationary environments. The relationship between our LPA-beamformer and the conventional beamformer is derived. Closed-form expressions are obtained for the bias and variance of the LPA-beamformer in the nonstationary case and the problem of optimal window choice is discussed.

This paper is concerned with array signal processing in nonGaussian noise and in the presence of multipath. Robust and fully nonparametric high resolution algorithms for direction of arrival (DOA) estimation are presented. The algorithms are based on multivariate spatial sign and rank concepts. Spatial smoothing of the multivariate rank and sign based covariance matrices is employed as a preprocessing step in order to deal with coherent sources. The performance of the algorithms is studied using simulations. The results show that almost optimal performance is obtained in wide variety of different noise conditions.

A front-end radar array processing system that operates in the subband domain is considered. It is assumed that pulse compression will be performed on radar return signals in the subband domain. A cohesive algorithm is presented that optimizes the design of all filters used in the subbanding process. These include the analysis filter (used to decompose return signals into narrowband components), the synthesis filter (used when combining subband components after processing), and the pulse compression generating filter (used to generate subband pulse compression filters from a wideband pulse compression filter). The algorithm attempts to minimize system aliasing noise, frequency distortion, and subband processing operations count.

We introduce a new algorithm for the estimation of source location parameters from array data given prior distributions on unknown nuisance source signal parameters. The conditional maximum-likelihood (CML) formulation is employed, and ML estimation is obtained by marginalizing over the nuisance parameters. In general, direct solution of this marginalization ML problem is intractable. We introduce an expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm solution, which is applicable to any prior distribution.

This work presents a general framework for identification of multipath channel. The connection between different methods are established, allowing comparison of performances. Several blind identification algorithms are proposed depending of the temporal correlation of the fadings. Moreover we have proposed an approximate ML method which is low computationally cost and quasi optimal.

A maximum a-posteriori (MAP) estimator for multitarget tracking based on sensor array data has been derived for temporally uncorrelated signals and uncorrelated contact tracks. This batch estimator is an iterative algorithm employing a nested pair of expectation maximization (EM) based algorithms. The 'hidden data' are direction-of-arrival estimates of synthetic signal estimates, each conditioned on prior track distributions. In this paper, the batch method is extended to operate in a sequential manner by defining a moving batch window and stride for processing the incoming data. Comparisons to the full batch method are presented and discussed.

This paper describes the experimental application of sensors array and multichannel digital signal processing to the equalization of the acoustic field in car compartments. The aim of this multichannel active noise control system is not simply to cancel undesirable noise but to reshape the sound field around the listener's head. A modified version of filtered-X LMS active noise equalizer algorithm has been developed and extended to multiple channels. A 4100 type Bruel dummy head and torso with two calibrated microphones at the ear's canals has been used to obtain sound levels in an hypothetic listener's ears. The equalization points are not only the error sensors position but an area around them which is measured using the manikin. It has been found that at low frequencies the zones of equalization created around the point of control are large enough to cover the movements of the head without disturbing algorithm's stability.

This paper describes a 2-D adaptive array for separating uncorrelated sources. A matrix preprocessing beamformer, which will result in outputs from individual sources in the steady state, is used. The beamformer is updated periodically using the most recently available source location estimates. These estimates are in turn refined by using the beamformer outputs to adaptively eliminate correlated components in a reference element of the array. Although its initial convergence may be rather erratic, the adaptive algorithm has low O(M) complexity and has only 1 asymptotic time constant.

Multisensor array processing of noisy measurements has received considerable attention in many areas of signal processing. The optimal processing techniques developed so far usually assume the signal and noise processes are at least wide-sense-stationary, yet a need exists for efficient, effective methods for processing nonstationary signals. While wavelets have proven to be useful tools in dealing with certain nonstationary signals, the way in which wavelets are to be used in the multisensor setting has only recently been considered. In this work we show how multisensor denoising can be carried out in perturbed, narrowband arrays even in the absence of the signal source's direction of arrival. We show that our proposed blind estimator can be implemented efficiently and robustly employing only wavelet and discrete Fourier transforms while entailing only a small loss in performance.
