We present a quasi-maximum likelihood approach to blind source separation (BSS) which is based on approximating the source distributions by their truncated Edgeworth expansions. The paper focuses on the 2/spl times/2 case, for which the problem is known to reduce to the estimation of a single rotation angle. Unlike existing maximum likelihood BSS techniques, the proposed algorithm is consistent for any source distribution, provided that the usual identifiability condition (at most one Gaussian source) is satisfied. Closed-form expressions are derived for the true Cramer Rao bound (CRB), for the CRB corresponding to the Edgeworth approximation, and for the large-sample variance of the proposed estimator. The proposed algorithm is compared with existing approaches via extensive simulations.

This paper focuses on beamspace DOA estimation in colored noise. We present a beamspace transformation that preserves the Cramer Rao bounds for the parameters of interest, and at the same time interpolates the true array manifold in such a way that a virtual uniform linear array is obtained in beamspace. Besides the computational savings offered by the dimensionality reduction, the virtual array enables the use of computationally simple algorithms such as root-MUSIC or ESPRIT.

Distributed microsensor networks promise a versatile and robust platform for remote environment monitoring. Crucial to long system lifetimes for these microsensors are algorithms and protocols that provide the option of trading quality for energy savings. Dynamic voltage scaling on the sensor node's processor enables energy savings from these scalable algorithms. We demonstrate dynamic voltage scaling on the beginnings of a sensor node prototype, which currently consists of a commercial processor, a digitally adjustable DC-DC regulator, and a power-aware operating system.

This paper investigates new algorithms for blind source separation that use cumulants instead of nonlinearities matched to the probability distribution of the sources. It is demonstrated that separation is a saddle point of a cumulant-based entropy cost function. To determine this point we propose two quasi-Newton algorithms whose convergence is isotropic and does not depend on the sources distribution. Moreover, convergence properties remain the same when there is Gaussian noise in the mixture.

Spaceborne radar systems have been proposed that use the concept of "formation flying" satellites; a system wherein a cluster of small, individual satellites orbit the Earth while remaining in the same relative positions with respect to each other. Each individual satellite would be a standard SAR sensor, but the data collected from each could be combined to produce a single "virtual" satellite from the overall array of sensors. The question from a radar standpoint is, how should this data be processed, and what are the benefits in radar performance resulting from this design? A spaceborne array of radar satellites has the advantage that angle-of-arrival information, in addition to range-Doppler data, is collected. Essentially, the array of satellites can be viewed as a large, albeit sparse, array of antennas. This paper demonstrates that this extra information can be used to produce SAR imagery over both an arbitrarily wide swathwidth and with fine resolution. This is accomplished by applying a minimum mean squared error processing algorithm to combine the data from each sensor. The results of several simulations are shown; they demonstrate the efficacy of the concept and the processing. It is also shown that, as the number of satellites increases, the performance of the MMSE processing increases and the hardware requirements associated with each radar are eased.

Multi sensor receivers are now acknowledged as a useful tool in the context of radio mobile communication, as well for equalization as for jammer rejection [1,2,3]. Recall that due to multiple path propagation, art equalizer is needed whenever the propagation delays between paths are of the same order of magnitude than the symbol duration. Second, combatting jamming is the key to capacity improvement of a cellular network. Jamming can be caused by remote users in Other cells, or by same cell users in the context of SDMA (Spatial Division Multiple Access) [4,5]. A receiver structure performing both equalization and jammer rejection is therefore needed. Such optimal structures have already been described A practical implementation of such a receiver has been. presented in [II]. Though being suboptimal, it is simple, and robust. This paper gives a theoretical justification of the approach of[II]. Simulation results are presented.

A novel algorithm for recurrent adaptive spatial and temporal processing for HF modem synchronisation and multipath resolution has been developed and experimentally tested under a cooperative agreement between the Odessa State Polytechnic University (Ukraine) and Thomson-CSF Communication (France). HF modem signals have been transmitted from Coulommiers (France) and received by the 12-element uniform antenna array with digital multichannel receivers in Odessa (Ukraine). Co-channel interference situations with different signal-to-interference ratios have been employed to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed technique. Experimental results obtained are in agreement with theoretical expectations and demonstrate the practicality of reliable co-channel interference suppression.

The rank selection problem of a multichannel data covariance matrix is addressed by Bayesian methodology. A maximum a posteriori solution is derived, and a bootstrap technique for its implementation proposed. Our rule is tested on simulated sensor array data that represent random signals embedded in white Gaussian noise. The tests include comparisons with the popular AIC and MDL criteria. The results show that the Bayesian rule outperforms them, particularly for low signal-to-noise ratios and small direction-of-arrival separations.

Studies have shown that in the presence of spatial or temporal diversity, blind identification/equalization is perfectly achievable under some conditions on the channel transfer function and amount of data considered. However, in the presence of channel noise, equalization can no longer be achieved perfectly. We study the best achievable linear equalizer performance in terms of the input/output minimum mean square error (MMSE), defining the channel equalizability as a function of the multichannel transfer function roots and the signal to noise ratio (SNR). We show that a channel disparity lower bound can be deduced as a function of the SNR in order to achieve a given MMSE.

The article addresses the problem of optimal blind linear symbol recovery, using the channel diversity induced by a sensor array or time oversampling. We present a technique allowing the computation of a minimum mean-square error (MMSE) equalizer, based on the optimization of quadratic second-order functions. The proposed technique improves on existing multichannel equalization methods, in that previous methods generally build on criteria which are optimal in the sole noise free context. Our criterion also allows a free choice of the delay for symbol recovery. As a consequence, the MMSE equalization performance can be enhanced through the use of an optimal delay. To this end, a performance analysis is conducted in order to investigate some of the links between the delay and the symbol estimation accuracy.
