This paper describes a method for detecting and tracking multiple moving targets using a multistatic narrowband radar sensor array. We show that the appropriate model for the sensor array measurements is non-linear and the statistics are non-Gaussian. We use this model in conjunction with a Bayesian estimation algorithm which constructs a probability density on the number of targets and their states. The density is approximated using a novel hybrid discrete grid/particle filter. We evaluate the performance on a set of experimental data from a 6-channel array to detect and track two targets that cross, make sharp turns, and move nearly cross-radially to some pairs for a significant portion of the collect.

In this paper, we consider a multi-user massive MIMO network with hybrid beamforming architecture at the base station. The objective is to jointly perform user selection and design analog-digital hybrid beamformers in order to maximize a given utility function while satisfying various pertinent constraints. The problem is combinatorial and impractical to solve optimally for a large system. In order to overcome the problem we develop a low-complexity heuristic algorithm. We propose a novel metric to judiciously select a predefined number of appropriate users and to pick congruent analog beamformers from a given dictionary based on the sparse regression techniques. Complementary digital beamformers are then designed for the selected users and fixed analog beamformers. Through simulations we analyze the performance of the proposed technique and compare it with the performance of standard techniques.

We present analytical results which quantify the effect of system mismatch and finite sample support on acoustic vector sensor array performance. One noteworthy result is that the vector aspect of the array "dampens" the effect of array mismatch, enabling deeper true nulls. This is accomplished because the variance of the vector sensor array spatial response (due to rotational, positional and filter gain/phase perturbations) decreases in the sidelobes, unlike arrays of omnidirectional hydrophones. When sensor orientation is measured within a reasonable tolerance, the beampattern variance dominates the average sidelobe power response. Our analysis also suggests that vector sensor array gain performance is less sensitive to rotational than to positional perturbations in the regions of interest. We analytically characterize the eigen-SNR threshold, which depends on the signal and noise covariance and the number of noise-only and signal-plus-noise snapshots, below which (asymptotically speaking) reliable detection using sample eigenvalue based techniques is not possible. Thus for a given number of snapshots, since the dimensionality of the snapshot in a vector sensor array is larger than that of a hydrophone-only array, the eigen-SNR detection threshold will be greater whenever the eigenvector information is discarded. We present processing techniques customized to the unique characteristics of vector sensors, which exploit information encoded in the sample eigenvectors and are robust to the mismatch and finite sample support issues. These methods include adaptive processing techniques with multiple white noise constraints.

We have investigated the utility of field-of-view adaptation for multimodal sensing in cluttered multi-target environments. Measurement data from multiple integrated sensors are collected at a fusion center, which employs a soft association procedure to integrate them into the estimation procedure. A variance penalty model for the limited fields-of-view property is incorporated into the state estimation procedure. This model also forms the basis of an optimization problem that determines the best next-step sensing parameters for the changing target environment. Numerical simulations demonstrate the benefit of the proposed method for both tracking and association metrics compared to a non-adaptive tracker.

Hybrid analog-digital beamforming has been shown to reduce hardware cost and power consumption in massive MIMO systems, at the expense of increased radiated power for given performance targets. To alleviate the above shortfall, in this paper we exploit the concept of constructive interference (CI) that has been shown to offer significant radiated power savings in fully-digital multi-user downlink MIMO systems. We explore analog beamforming design, and develop solutions specifically tailored for CI-based hybrid beamforming. We also evaluate the performance of the presented techniques and their computational complexities using simulation results.

In this paper, we develop a scheme to partition a one- or multi-dimensional consecutive integer number set into multiple identical, possibly rotated, subsets. The proposed technique first exploits one-dimensional nested subsets, and the results are extended to achieve two- and multi-subset partitioning as well as in two- and multi-dimensional spaces. The number of consecutive lags in each case is examined. The results are useful to various sensing and communication applications, and sparse step-frequency waveform design for range estimation in automotive radar is demonstrated as an example.

The resolving ambiguity of phase interferometer is necessary when the baseline separation between elements exceeds half wavelength since the phase difference between elements can only be measured modulo 2 pi. It is difficult to meet the condition the minimum distance between two antennas is less than half wavelength for avoiding ambiguity in wideband operation. In this paper, we propose a simple and efficient array design method which minimizes the probability of ambiguity. This method adapts NLA (nonuniform linear array) geometry. And there is no need to maintain the distance between antennas less than half wavelength. We also show some numerical examples and experimental results of the 2-D array prototype for airborne application.

Computed Spectroscopy (TM) (CS) is a new approach to hyperspectral imaging recently introduced by the authors [1]*. The CS technique uses an adjustable optical array, which can be considered to be a form of delay-and-sum passive beamformer. Adopting this point of view, such an array can be analyzed using the (difference) coarray [2], and a previous publication by the present authors [1] features a brief coarTay-based analysis. In the present paper we review the Computed Spectroscopy method, give a coarray-based analysis of the approach, show how numerical problems arise in the reconstruction of wavenumber spectra at low spatial frequencies and give a method for addressing these problems in the computation. Additionally, we discuss an improved approach to discretization of the image formation model.

The importance of air transportation in everyday's life has increased dramatically in the last few years. Among the consequences of the growing demand for air-related services, the need of assuring an exact and timely flight arrival has become a crucial factor, both for safety and economical reasons. At the same time, broadcasting antennas, radio links and cellular telephone basis stations demand continuously increasing spaces around airports, representing a source of disturbing interferences for radio-navigation systems. In this paper, an improved Instrumental Landing System (ILS) receiver based on array processing concepts is proposed for safer automatic landing procedures. The new approach is based on Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation performed by the UN-MUSIC algorithm. The superior performance of the proposed system with respect to currently employed techniques in the presence of unwanted interferences has been tested in extensive computer simulations.

A windowed local polynomial approximation (LPA) of time-varying directions-of-arrival (DOA's) is exploited to derive a new form of beamformer for source localization and tracking in highly nonstationary environments. The relationship between our LPA-beamformer and the conventional beamformer is derived. Closed-form expressions are obtained for the bias and variance of the LPA-beamformer in the non stationary case and the problem of optimal window choice is discussed.
