It is known that the design of antenna array configuration is an important issue to the antenna array applications. In this paper, we present a method to design antenna array configurations for space-time adaptive processing (STAP) applied to mobile communication systems. We first derive an upper bound of the residual error power of STAP systems under the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. Then, the relationship between the bound and the space-time channel auto- and cross-correlation functions is established. According to this relationship, an objective function under perfect Monte Carlo sampling is proposed, based on which the array configuration that optimizes the performance is thus obtained. Numerical simulation results under a given statistical signa environment show the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

This paper develops a closed-form solution that improves the projection matrix method for time of arrival (TOA) source localization in the presence of sensor position inaccuracy. The projection approach is attractive because it does not require the use of an extra variable as in the traditional closed-form solution. Compared with the previous projection method, the proposed algorithm offers a closed-form solution and at the same time attains the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) performance for Gaussian noise over the small noise region. The performance of the proposed method is validated by simulations.

Personal audio systems are designed to deliver spatially separated regions of audio to individual listeners. This paper presents a method for improving the privacy of such systems. The level of a synthetic masking signal is optimised to provide specified levels of intelligibility in the bright and dark sound zones and reduce the potential for annoyance of listeners in the dark zone by responding to changes in ambient noise. Results from a simulated personal audio system indicate that less acoustic contrast is required to produce the same level of privacy when artificial masking is included in the system design, compared with relying on the masking effect of background noise alone. As privacy requirements become more challenging, the advantage gained by incorporating artificial masking increases.

Compared with uniform linear array (ULA), the coprime array can obtain larger array aperture with the same number of physical sensors, which leads to higher spatial resolution and less effect of mutual coupling. Also, the degrees of freedom (DOFs) can be increased by reconstructing the sampling covariance matrix (SCM) in virtual array domain. In this paper, we propose a robust adaptive beamforming (RAB) algorithm based on coprime array. A novel subspace based method is performed in virtual array domain to estimate the power and direction of arrival (DOA) of interference, which also obtains the ability for DOFs enhancement. Simulation results demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed method.

We propose a low complexity array processing method for differential detection of OFDM signals over underwater acoustic channels. Partial FFT technique, developed previously for mitigating inter-carrier interference in single-channel receivers operating over time-varying channels, is extended to multichannel configuration. Performance results based on simulation and experimental data demonstrate the advantage of the proposed method compared to conventional differential and coherent detection.

In this paper, we develop a general framework of multi-frequency sparse array to estimate the direction-of-arrival (DOA) of a significantly higher number of targets than the number of physical sensors. The multi-frequency sparse arrays are designed to offer zero lag redundancy in the rendered difference coarray so that the available degrees of freedom are fully utilized to enable high-resolution DOA estimation. A modified sensor interpolation technique is developed to accurately estimate the signal correlation matrix so that the effect of holes in the difference coarray is mitigated. The proposed technique accounts for both self-lags between signals corresponding to the same frequencies and the cross-lags between signals corresponding to different frequencies. As such, it enhances the DOA estimation performance compared to existing methods that either perform array interpolation utilizing only the self-lags or carry out group sparse reconstruction without exploiting array interpolation. Simulation results verify the offerings of the multi-frequency sparse arrays.

This paper investigates an adaptive beamforming technique that is robust against imperfect knowledge of signal and interference arrival directions, antenna calibration errors and other similar imperfections. The proposed technique is based on Generalized Sidelobe Canceller but uses Slepian sequences in both the steering and blocking lobes of the algorithm. Only Slepians corresponding to large spectral concentrations are used in the branches. The theoretical results are verified in a simulation study.

Conventional subspace based direction finding approaches such as MUSIC and ESPRIT algorithms commonly use the array data covariance matrix. In non stationary context, the use of the Spatial Time-Frequency Distribution (STFD) instead of the covariance matrix can significantly improve the performance of such algorithms. In this paper we are interested in the performance analysis of such approaches in the presence of both additive noise and perturbed array manifold. An unified expression of the Direction Of Arrival (DOA) error estimation is derived for both approaches. The obtained results show that for low signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and high signal to sensor Perturbation Ratio (SPR) the STFD based DOA estimations perform better, while for high SNR and for the same SPR both Covariance and STFD based approaches have similar performance.

The problem of detecting transient multichannel signals of unknown waveform shape has been widely studied in recent years due to the numerous applications associated with it. Nevertheless, the particular case of unknown source waveforms impinging on an array of closely spaced sensors and buried in strong spatially and temporally correlated noise process has received little attention due to its inherent complexity, but yet arises in many array signal processing applications. In this work, we extend our recently developed Multiresolution Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test detector (MRGLRT) [1] to the problem of determining the number of observations needed to make a decision in the statistical hypothesis-testing problem. We reformulate the MRGLRT detector and compare two strategies for the hypothesis testing, namely, sequential and block tests. We show that, on the average, a smaller number of observations are needed to make a decision in either case. The strength of the proposed detector lies in the fact that it is derived under no assumptions about the signal and/or the noise process. We illustrate through simulated and experimental data the superiority of the new detector over the traditional time domain detector in many aspects.
