Direction of arrival (DOA) estimation from time differences of arrival (TDOA) is used in several array systems. In some cases, practical constraints may necessitate the use of heavily quantized TDOA estimates. The quantization in TDOAs also causes the directional estimate to be quantized. This paper proposes a lattice-based representation for the quantization scenario. This representation can be used to evaluate the performance of a given array when TDOAs are quantized and it also provides guidelines for optimum array design. In addition, the lattice structure can be used for evaluating the reliability of DOA estimates when other errors are present

In this paper, we propose a new near-field source localization algorithm without any spectral peak searching or parameter pairing. Firstly, based on fourth-order cumulant of the outputs of a uniform linear array (ULA), we derive a multiple invariance-sensor array processing (MI-SAP)-type data model using the formed cumulant matrices. Secondly, the DOA, range, and frequency parameters are estimated from the matrices got via trilinear decomposition of three-way array. Finally, simulation results are presented to validate the performance of the proposed method

While synthetic aperture sonar is now a mature technology for active imaging of the sea floor, its use for improving passive detection or localisation of underwater acoustic sources is still a research issue. In the first part, we show that the phase shifts for passive synthetic aperture beamforming do not depend on the steering direction. Hence a passive synthetic aperture has the same directivity pattern like the real aperture that it originates from. The directivity gain of an active synthetic aperture is caused by the phase origin reset at each transmit time resulting in a phase discontinuity depending on the bearing angle. Model-based array processing (MBAP), which estimates a source state from the array vector signal, has been proposed as an alternative to passive synthetic aperture for improving source localization. In the second part, we propose a MBAP approach based on a hidden Markov model (HMM) where the signal phase is a third order polynomial. Numerical simulation shows that it does not improve the bearing angle accuracy with respect to an HMM tracker performing on the square magnitude output of real aperture beamforming. This result is in accordance with the fact that both estimators meet the same Cramer-Rao lower bound. But the new method has interesting detection potential

The performance of Krylov subspace-based dimensionality reduction for adaptive beamforming is analyzed using a simple second-order Taylor series approximation to the mean output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). It is shown that the predicted SNRs accurately follow the experimentally measured SNR and explain the threshold effects when the angles or spacing are varied between the signal mode (subspace) and interference modes (subspace). Furthermore, we discuss how the SNR approximation can be applied to calculating the deflection of a Krylov subspace dimension-reduced Capon's test statistic.

We develop a wideband adaptive beamformer with an improved robustness against presteering errors. The proposed beamformer employs the presteered broadband array processor and models the uncertainty in the array manifold as norm-bounded phase errors at the outputs of the presteering delay filters. A state-space model is developed for this robust beamforming problem, and an extended Kalman filter (EKF) is used to estimate the beamformer weight vector adaptively with a low computational complexity.

We propose a method of indoor localization using array sensors. This method uses not only the signal strengths of received signals, but also the spatial information of impinging signals on array sensors. The signal subspaces, which include information about the strengths and angles of arrival of impinging signals on the array sensors, are used to identify the location of the terminal. We use the cosines of the principal angles between the signal subspaces of the spatial covariance matrices of the signals received at an array antenna to measure the similarity between signals transmitted from two locations. We conducted an experiment indoors to confirm the validity and effectiveness of our method. The experimental results confirm its effectiveness

For low frequency observations (< 300 MHz) the radio astronomical community is currently developing a number of new instruments such as the low frequency array (LOFAR), the Mileura wide field array (MWA) and the primeval structure telescope (PaST). These telescopes require new calibration algorithms since phased arrays require an all-sky approach to imaging and calibration. This implies that the calibration will generally have to deal with a multitude of sources. In this paper we will discuss a multisource calibration method to estimate the gains and phases of the receiving elements without having to solve for the receiver noise powers at the same time. Our method is able to handle arbitrary known source models. We will show that the proposed algorithm is asymptotically efficient by comparing the results from Monte Carlo simulations with the Cramer-Rao bound for the underlying data model

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar/sonar systems transmit signals coded in time and space domains and have several advantages upon conventional systems. In this paper, the Barankin bound on target localization errors is used for analysis of the threshold signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of MIMO radar/sonar systems. It is shown that the threshold SNR of MIMO systems with spatially orthogonal transmit signals, is significantly lower than with coherent transmit signals. Orthogonal signal transmission results in lower threshold SNR, because of the lower sidelobes in the likelihood function. The lower sidelobes are achieved, since MIMO configuration allows to process the signal in both transmit and receive modes. Simulation results show that the threshold SNR obtained by orthogonal signal transmission is lower by more than 10 dB compared to coherent signal transmission

In this paper, an alternative target density function (TDF) is proposed to image the radar targets in a dense target environment. It is obtained by considering a novel range and scanning angle plane different from the conventional methods. An alternative method is briefly proposed for smoothing the target density function by taking advantage of Walsh functions. Although the imaging is obtained via the phased array radars, the problem associated with beamforming in linear phased array radar system is bypassed in this new algorithm
