We consider the problem of reachback communication in wireless sensor networks: multiple sensors are deployed on a field, and they collect local measurements of some random process which then need to be encoded and reproduced at a remote location. In this paper we present a number of information theoretic bounds on the performance of a distributed transmission array that is formed by a large number of cheap, unreliable sensors. We formulate this problem in terms of classical network information theory concepts, formulation which leads us to consider two important cases: Transmission of correlated sources over multiple independent channels, and rate/distortion with separate encoders. © 2002 ieee.

In this paper, we present a way to track multiple maneuvering targets with varying time-frequency signatures. A particle filter is used to track targets that have constant speeds with changing heading directions. The target motion dynamics help the particle filter achieve an angular resolution otherwise not possible by the conventional beamforming techniques. Moreover, the particle filter has a built-in target association that eliminates the need for heuristic techniques commonly used in the multiple target tracking problems. Reference priors are used to derive the probability distribution function of the acoustic array outputs given the state of the multiple target states (MTS's). Local linearization is used to approximate the importance function used in the particle filter by a Gaussian pdf. Finally, computer simulations are used to demonstrate the performance of the algorithm with synthetic data.

A novel method for streamlining two different signals from sonar and optical sensors into a single signal processing flow to implement an obstacle avoidance algorithm is presented. The processing architecture consists of a custom fabricated analog smoothing array and a microcontroller. The combination of these two elements reduces power requirements well below that of a DSP performing a similar algorithm enabling a necessary increase of endurance for an autonomous underwater vehicle (A UV). Both signals utilize the same signal path and the final heading decision is made with the microcontroller through a simple and low-power differencing and accumulation process.

The ambiguity problem in direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation using a sensor array, manifests itself as spurious peaks in the DOA spectrum, making the true targets indistinguishable from the false alarms. A criterion that determines the presence of certain ambiguities inherent to a symmetric linear array has been proposed in the literature (Manikas, A. and Proukakis, C., ieee Trans. Sig. processing, vol.46, no.8, p.2166-79, 1998). The criterion is a useful tool to design reliable sensor arrays. A generalization of this ambiguity criterion is presented. The new ambiguity criterion encompasses more ambiguous DOAs and therefore gives a more accurate measurement of the reliability of an array design.

A new approach to adaptive beamforming with sidelobe control is developed. The proposed technique represents a modification of the popular minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamformer. It minimizes the array output power while keeping the distortionless response in the direction of the desired signal and, at the same time, maintaining a sidelobe level which is strictly guaranteed to be lower than some given (prescribed) value. Multiple quadratic inequality constraints are used outside the mainlobe beampattern area to maintain the prescribed sidelobe level. The resulting modified MVDR problem is shown to be convex and its second-order cone (SOC) formulation is obtained which enables our beamformer to be implemented in a computationally efficient way using the interior point method.

A Bayesian approach to beamforming is used to derive a sequential adaptive beamformer for estimating Gauss-Markov signals when the source direction-of-arrival (DOA) is uncertain. The DOA is assumed to be randomly selected from a discrete set of candidate directions, with a known probability mass function (PMF). Through a development similar to that of Bell, et al. (see ieee Trans. signal processing, vol.48, p.386-98, 2000), for i.i.d. sources, the resulting estimator becomes a weighted-combination of Kalman estimators for the source, where the observations for each estimator are retrieved using an MVDR beamformer for each of the candidate DOAs and where the relative weighting is proportional to the likelihood of the DOA given the observed data so far. Aspects of the proposed beamformer, such as robustness to DOA and asymptotic estimation performance are compared with conventional MVDR-based approaches.

This paper describes the use of voice activity detector (VAD) in microphone array processing for hand-free systems. Two different types of VAD are proposed using conventional and adaptive beamforming. Taking into account the fact that the speech signal is not present at all time in human conversations, both signal of interest and noise can be better estimated. Simulation results show that the VAD significantly improves the performance of the array processing algorithms. The performances of the two types of VAD are also compared in the paper.

This paper shows that the performance of multi-target tracking (MTT-1) systems can be significantly increased with stored program adaptive cellular array sensors. The primary motivation of the present work is to define a topographic microprocessor architecture for MTT with embedded sensors capable of operating in a process real-time manner. In the ongoing experiments it is assumed that the input data flow is acquired by a single array sensor and the data is processed on an adaptive CNN-UM [4] architecture consisting of both cellular nonlinear network (CNN, [1]-[7]) and digital signal processing (DSP) microprocessors. The algorithms designed for this combined hardware platform use adaptive multi-channel CNN solutions for instantaneous position estimation and morphological characterization of all visible targets and the DSP environment for distance calculation, gating, data association, track maintenance and dynamic target motion prediction. A special feature of the architecture is that it allows an interactive communication between the sensor and the digital environment. The configuration of functional modules for various real-time applications is discussed. Using real-life video-flows, successful tracking of several maneuvering targets is demonstrated within the proposed adaptive multi-channel framework.

The paper presents a general framework for spatial wavelet processing in the context of a uniform linear array. By defining the scale in terms of the spatial sampling resolution, the spatial multi-resolution structure inherent in the array signal has an explicit representation based on the wavelet decomposition. Beamforming can then be implemented on the subband data. The new framework is applied to a real sonar target detection problem, and the traditional time-delay beamformer shows an improved computational efficiency. The efficiency gain is proportional to the number of sensors for targets near the broadside direction.
