A novel test has been developed to measure the maximum achievable array calibration performance of a multi-channel receiving system. The test will quantitatively determine the quality of a particular calibration solution and rank the relative performance of several candidate calibration solutions. It also provides a measure of the dynamic range of the multichannel receiver as distinct from traditional tests which reveal the dynamic range of individual channels and not the multi-channel system as a whole. We demonstrate the utility of the test by analysing an eight channel HF receiver system.

A method of direction finding for FM signals based on averaged spatial time-frequency distributions is presented. This technique has been applied previously to algorithms such as MUSIC and maximum likelihood (ML). However, these estimation techniques do not take full advantage of the underlying diagonal structure of the source matrices. It is demonstrated that, by using the direction estimation for uncorrelated emitters (DEUCE) algorithm (Jansson, M. et al., ieee Trans. Sig. processing, vol.47, no.4, p.945-56, 1999), we can improve the performance in estimating the source directions. To use this approach, knowledge of the source auto-term locations on the time-frequency plane is required. In the absence of prior knowledge about the time-frequency signatures of the sources, an automatic point selection procedure is incorporated. The proposed scheme is demonstrated to yield results close to the optimal case of known auto-term locations.

In sensor networks, where power and bandwidth are at a premium, there is a clear need to use compression to limit the amount of information exchanged by the sensors. We study the signal compression problem in situations where signals are being processed for the purpose of source localization. In these scenarios, compression should be optimized for the accuracy of source localization, rather than to provide a reproduction of the signals with some desired fidelity. We show how this leads to novel design techniques that have clear advantages over standard quantizer design approaches.

Standard high resolution array processing techniques are based on simultaneous sampling of the whole multiple sensor array and, hence, require that the number of receivers should be equal to the number of receiving antennas. A switch antenna array FMCW radar system is introduced as a promising substitute for the multiple-channel array due to its lower cost and a simpler front-end circuitry. New high-resolution signal processing algorithms for the system composed of a single transmitter, m receiving antennas, and a single receiving channel are based on the new nonstationary version of the Capon (1969) beamforming. Simulation demonstrates that the new algorithms yield very good performance in terms of both estimation accuracy and multiple-target resolution. These algorithms give better estimation than the MUSIC algorithm even for the case of slow moving targets.

The paper deals with maximum likelihood (ML) direction of arrival (DOA) estimation of multiple moving sources. The time-varying DOAs are described by a linear polynomial. Based on the recursive EM algorithm, we develop a recursive procedure to estimate the coefficients of the corresponding polynomial. Because of the simple structure of the augmented data, the resulting recursion has a very simple implementation. Compared to the recursive algorithm developed by L. Frenkel and M. Feder (see ieee Trans. Sig. processing, vol.47, no.2, p.306-20, 1999), our approach has the advantage of being insensitive to signal variations. In addition, extension to the wideband case is straightforward. Simulation results show that closely spaced signals can be successfully tracked by the proposed method.

This paper concerns the problem of array shape estimation from clutter (ASEC) for a towed active sonar array. Although heading sensors can provide towed-array shape information, they are sometimes not sufficiently available or accurate to facilitate beamforming with low sidelobe levels necessary for detection of low-Doppler targets, especially in the presence of severe bottom reverberation. We propose a maximum likelihood array shape calibration technique that exploits the azimuth-Doppler frequency relationship of the clutter by fitting the reverberation snapshots from a single sonar ping to the low rank space-time clutter subspace.

The performance of a subspace beamformer, namely the multiple signal classification algorithm (MUSIC), is scrutinized in the presence of sensor position errors. Based on a perturbation model, a relationship between the array autocorrelation matrix and the source autocorrelation matrix is established. It is shown that under certain assumptions on the source signals, the Gaussian sensor perturbation errors can be modelled as additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) for an array where sensor positions are known perfectly. This correspondence can be used to equate position errors to an equivalent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for AWGN in performance evaluation. Finally, Cramer-Rao bound for the position perturbations that can be computed using the Cramer-Rao bound relations for the additive Gaussian noise case at high SNR's.

A computationally efficient spatial signature (SS) based method is proposed for estimating the directions-of-arrival (DOAs) of coherent narrowband signals impinging on a uniform linear array (ULA). The normalized SS of the coherent signals is blindly estimated from the signal eigenvector of the array covariance matrix and then is used to estimate the directions with a modified Kumaresan-Prony (K-P) method, where a linear prediction (LP) model is combined with "subarray" averaging. The proposed method not only has the maximum permissible array aperture and computational simplicity, it also better resolves closely spaced coherent signals with small length of data and at lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

This paper deals with the estimation of celerity and coherence time using array of equispaced sensors for observing the ocean surface. A fast algorithm based on array processing or spatial analysis is proposed. Initially, two-antenna synthetic aperture radars (SAR) system are used in order to obtain two images of the same surface of the ocean afterwards the analysis of these images by using the signal processing or spectral analysis leads to estimate phase difference between the images and finally the mean short-term Doppler shift of the scattering from the ocean surface is estimated on pixel by pixel basis. To improve velocity and time coherence estimation the multiple antenna system is introduced in SAR system. Indeed, the use of more than two-antennas allows to develop statistical methods or multidimensional signal processing algorithms. Interesting studies, in which the blind maximum likelihood algorithms are used, have been published. Its performance is proved to be more accurate than the two-antenna SAR system based methods. The proposed algorithm is based on the second order statistics of the received data. Both the correlation and the coherence matrices are used for estimating the noise power, the spatial correlation matrix of the speckle and the coherence time of the ocean surface.
