As an emerging array processing technique, frequency diverse array (FDA) differs from conventional phased-array in that it employs a frequency increment across the array elements. The use of frequency increment provides FDA with an array factor with joint range-angle dependency, which finds wide applications in joint range-angle target localization and range-dependent interference/clutter suppression. In the open literature, an ideal point-like target in far field is generally assumed for FDA signal modelling. However, the reflectivity characterization for more realistic targets, which are not ideally point-like and even extended in range and azimuth angle, has not been reported for FDA radar. In this paper, we establish an echo signal model of FDA radar for a general target, and then analyze the statistics of the echo signal amplitude. More specifically, we reveal the amplitude decorrelation property between different FDA elements due to the use of frequency increment, which provides useful insight into frequency increment design. The target reflectivity characteristic analysis is validated by numerical results.

Strong interferences occur in several wireless scenarios, such as full-duplex wireless communications and heterogenous networks in unlicensed spectrum. Because strong interferences can cause excessive quantization noise in the receiver’s analog-to-digital converters (ADC), mitigation of strong interferences needs to be conducted not only after but before the ADCs, i.e., via hybrid processing – an actively researched topic in recent years. In this paper, we propose to use an M-input M-output analog phase shifter network (PSN) between the receiving antennas and the ADCs to prewhiten spatially the interferences (plus signal and noise). This scheme, referred to as the Hybrid Interference Mitigation using Analog Prewhitening (HIMAP), requires no information about the interferences except an estimated spatial covariance matrix. Before the ADCs, the HIMAP scheme suppresses the strong interferences through optimizing the PSN; after the ADCs, the HIMAP suppresses the residual interferences through employing minimum mean squared error (MMSE) beamforming. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the HIMAP scheme.

Reliable detection and accurate estimation of weak targets and their Doppler frequencies is a challenging problem in MIMO radar systems. Reflections from such targets are often overpowered by those from stronger nearby targets and clutter. Considering a 3-D data model where the coherent processing interval comprises multiple pulses, a novel weak target detection and estimation approach is proposed in this paper. The proposed method is based on creating partially overlapping spatial beams, and performing canonical correlation analysis (CCA) in the resulting beamspace. It is shown that if a target is present in the overlap sector, then its Doppler profile can be reliably estimated via beamspace CCA, even if hidden under much stronger interference from nearby targets and clutter. Numerical results are included to validate this theoretical claim, demonstrating that the proposed Beamspace Canonical Correlation (BCC) method yields considerable performance improvement over existing approaches.

In this paper, we consider the problem of adaptive beamforming for sample-starved scenarios. A beamforming design method is developed for the case when the only available data is a single-snapshot that is contaminated by the signal-of-interest. Instead of using the non-invertible rank-one sample covariance matrix, the proposed method reconstructs the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix via estimating the interference signal component(s) and the noise variance. The computationally-efficient fast iterative interpolated beamforming (FIIB) algorithm is used to estimate the spatial frequencies and complex amplitudes associated with the interference. The reconstructed covariance matrix is used for adaptive beamforming design. Unlike existing sparsity-based covariance reconstruction techniques, the proposed method is able to reconstruct off-grid interference components and its performance is shown to not suffer from estimation bias. Simulation examples are used to demonstrate the performance superiority of the proposed method over other adaptive single-snapshot beamforming techniques.

When the near-field underwater acoustic image (UAI) measurement is carried out by the line array laid on the sea floor, the resolution of the conventional beamforming (CBF) acoustic image measurement method is poor, the sidelobe level is high, while the deconvolution algorithm has the effect of high resolution and low sidelobe. However, the direct deconvolution algorithm of the point spread function (PSF) shift-variant model has a large computational burden. This paper presents a non-uniform spatial resampling Richardson-Lucy (RL) fast algorithm, which based on energy distribution of conventional acoustic image measurement result make the original uniform space scanning to non-uniform spatial resampling. It can reduce the number of scanning grid, so as to reduce the amount of computation. Simulation results show that the fast RL algorithm can achieve the performance close to the original RL algorithm by reducing the computational amount by nearly an order of magnitude.

Linear sparse arrays with $N$ physical sensors can resolve $\mathcal{O}(N^sensor)$ directions of arrival (DOAs) for uncorrelated sources. This attribute is associated with the difference coarray of size $\mathcal{O}(N^sensor)$ , However, the number of sources is assumed to be known in many coarray-based DOA estimators. This paper proposes a Monte Carlo source enumerator (MCSE) for sparse arrays by maximizing the log-likelihood function (LLF). This LLF depends on an unbounded parameter space and a multiple integral, which are challenging for computation. This unbounded parameter space is replaced with a bounded space derived from coarse estimates and Cramér-Rao bounds. Next, the multiple integral is approximated with Monte Carlo methods. The MCSE applies to three scenarios: no sources, fewer sources than sensors, and more sources than sensors. Furthermore, some details in the MCSE can be computed in parallel. Numerical examples demonstrate the applicability of the MCSE to sparse arrays.

A novel algorithm for recurrent adaptive spatial and temporal processing for HF modem synchronisation and multipath resolution has been developed and experimentally tested under a cooperative agreement between the Odessa State Polytechnic University (Ukraine) and Thomson-CSF Communication (France). HF modem signals have been transmitted from Coulommiers (France) and received by the 12-element uniform antenna array with digital multichannel receivers in Odessa (Ukraine). Co-channel interference situations with different signal-to-interference ratios have been employed to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed technique. Experimental results obtained are in agreement with theoretical expectations and demonstrate the practicality of reliable co-channel interference suppression.

Graphs are ubiquitous to model the irregular (non-Euclidean) structure of complex data, but they are limited to pairwise relationships and fail to model the complexities of the datasets exhibiting higher-order interactions. In that context, simplicial complexes (SCs) are emerging as a tractable candidate to handle such domains. The first step in using SC-based processing and learning schemes is to identify the topology of the SC, which is the problem investigated in this paper. In particular, we assume that we observe a number of signals (features) associated with the nodes of the SC (simplices of order 0) as well as signals (features) associated with a subset of the edges of the SC (simplices of order 1). The goal is then to use these signals to learn the remaining edges as well as the triangles that are filled (simplices of order 2). To address this problem, we assume that the signals are smooth on the unknown SC and that the higher-order relations are sparse. We then postulate the learning problem as a nonconvex optimization and develop an efficient (block-coordinate) algorithm to identify the SC topology.

In array signal processing beamformers are used to improve the signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR). Dominant mode rejection (DMR) is a common adaptive beamforming algorithm designed to detect quiet sources in the presence of a few loud interferers. Buck and Singer proposed the Universal DMR (UDMR) beamformer that automates the selection of the subspace rank by blending fixed-rank DMR beamformers based on their performance. While UDMR requires only slightly more computation than a single fixed-rank DMR, it still requires a computationally expensive eigendecomposition. This paper proposes to reduce the computational complexity of the UDMR by replacing the DMR beamformers with a set of conventional beamformers. The null-steered performance weighted blended (NS-PWB) beamformer combines beamformers with nulls steered to interlocking locations so that if a plane-wave interferer is present at least one beamformer in the set will have a null nearby. Additionally, when there are persistent sources of non-plane-wave interference then beamformers can be designed and included in the beamformer set to reject those interferers when they are present. This paper applies the NS-PWB beamformer to data from a vertical line array in the Philippine Sea. The results show that the NS-PWB approximates the SINR performance of DMR beamformers with significant computational savings.

A problem occurring in radio astronomy is the detection and cancellation of spatially correlated interfering signals entering via the sidelobes of the telescopes in an array. A complicating factor is that the noise powers can be different at each telescope. For the case that the sensors are uncalibrated, we formulate the detection problem as a test on the covariance structure, state the GLRT for this problem, and relate it to a simpler ad-hoc detector. We derive algorithms to estimate the noise powers and the subspace of interferer signature vectors. Once the subspace is estimated, the interference can be projected out. We compare this method to the conventional multichannel subspace detector and show its robustness to non-identical channels on data collected with the Westerbork radio telescope.
