As the information webs proliferate, networks are experiencing increased threats of intrusion and compromise of data integrity. The Caribbean consists of vibrant island economies and has well developed banking, hospitality, sports, entertainment and a significant presence of multinational Corporations. This sector of economy dictates the deployment of all emerging computing and information technologies. Another significant sector is the rural agricultural based economy that can potentially accept lesser sophistication in information development and exchange in the short run. The corresponding security challenges are different for these two sectors. The security challenges are in the definition and deployment of a robust architecture. The architecture discussed in this paper needs to be adapted to an individual business, education, or government entities. Within a given organization, appropriate linkages with the business processes needs to be meshed with the security architecture. The focus of this prescribed paper is to define a unified security architecture and some potential implementation scenarios that can be applied in local Caribbean industries. © 2005 ieee.

Wireless sensor networks are an enabling technology for many future surveillance-oriented applications. Before a practical wireless sensor network is realized, however, significant challenges must be overcome. Chief among the obstacles to netted sensors is providing low power, robust communications between sensor nodes. Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MIMO) communication promises performance enhancements over conventional single input, single output (SISO) technology for the same radiated power. If leveraged in a sensor network, MIMO may be able to provide significant network performance improvements in power consumption, latency, and network robustness. However, improvements in the physical layer are not always realized in the higher layers. This paper investigates the benefit of MIMO implementations in multihop wireless sensor networks in terms of network cohesion-that is, the ability of the sensor nodes to form a completely connected network.

Anomaly detection tools currently react to directed attacks during or shortly after they have occurred. Unfortunately, an attack that is detected after it has occurred is, in essence, a successful one. Advance warning of potential attacks could aid in their detection. Before an attack is launched, the attacker often performs reconnaissance on the target host or network to learn its vulnerabilities. If malicious network reconnaissance can be detected and identified, it can serve as a warning of future attacks and may provide clues as to the identity of the attacker. This paper presents a novel technique for the automated detection of malicious network reconnaissance in a live network. © 2005 ieee.

This paper investigates the feasibility of the latest CMOS technology for the implementation of the emerging 60-GHz wireless applications. The double-conversion zero-IF receiver architecture is proposed for the evaluation. From the recently reported work of wireless front-end building blocks, most of the components required in the proposed 60-GHz receiver have been demonstrated in CMOS technology. It is very promising that the improved characteristics of the scaled CMOS technology, down to 0.13 μm or below, is viable for the 60-GHz wireless front-end ICs. ©2005 ieee.

This paper proposes a fractional-N phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizer using 3rd order DS modulator for 915MHz medium speed FSK wireless link. The voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), pre-scaler of divide-by-8, phase frequency detector (PFD), and charge pump (CP) have been developed with 0.25-mm CMOS process. A 3rd order external loop filter has been optimized to reduce the lock-in time. The fractional-N divider and 3rd order DS modulator have been designed with the VHDL codes, and implemented through the FPGA board of the Xilinx Spartan2E. The VCO has been designed to span from 900MHz to 950MHz band using LC resonator, and a fractional-N divider uses a 36137 modulus and 3rd order DS modulator to reduce the fractional spur. The measured result shows that the RF output power of the frequency synthesizer is -10dBm, the phase noise is -78dBclHz at 100KHz offset frequency, the minimum frequency step is 10kHz, and the maximum lock-in time is around 800ms with 10MHz step change.

The purpose of this research is to use GPS to visualize the trajectory of space, air, sea, and land vehicles. This research will reveal the visualization trajectories of two scenarios. One of the scenarios will be an airplane trajectory and the other will be a shuttle launch trajectory. In the first scenario, an airplane flew from Cape Canaveral to Vancouver, Canada. In the second scenario, a rocket was launched from Cape Canaveral and landed near the Corpus Christi, Texas. In order to set up these scenarios, we used a GPS Simulator, GPS receiver, lap-top computer, MATLAB software, FUGAWI software and SATELLITE TOOL KIT (STK) software. This research can be used in a classroom/laboratory environment to give students hands on experience in the integration of hardware and software equipment used for GPS applications. © 2005 ieee.

Structured analysis and design (SAD), object-oriented analysis and design (OOAD), and interface design (ID) define formal methods for discovering requirements and designing interactive software systems. Structured and object-oriented methods, collectively known as software engineering (SE) methods, specify methodologies that employ a unique set of interrelated models. Interface design methods employ user-centered techniques to understand users, their work environment and goals. Each specialized approach relies on the knowledge worker as a source of requirements where success hinges on effective coordination of activities in heterogeneous software development environments [10]. The software creation process may employ each of these methods independent of the other, in conjunction with the other, or not at all. SAD, OOAD, and ID methods yield independent views of requirements yet many of their activities, or dimensions of requirements, overlap within the context of a software development project. This paper will investigate dimensions of requirements common to those methods that suggest collaborative opportunity, reduced knowledge worker burden, and improved software quality are possible. A current state analysis of requirements methods defined in the literature, and identification of interrelated and overlapping characteristics will be discussed. © 2005 ieee.

Traditionally IS departments were responsible for managing data, networking, system analysis and constructing and maintaining the computer systems in an organization. This role has changed and IS departments now offer a wide variety of services in organizations. As a result of the growing importance of service quality in organizations, managers have faced increasing pressures to measure the performance of the IS department. The purpose of this initial study is to evaluate the service quality of the IS unit of Jamaica Foods Group (JFG). This is the initial study of service quality of a number of Jamaican companies that have implemented ERP systems. The objective is to determine what factors in the Jamaican and ERP systems environment determine user-satisfaction and to provide useful diagnostics for managing the IS unit and the organization's IT resources. The methodological approach used, focused on collecting primary data from staff members from four locations of the organization. The data was collected using the widely accepted IS modified SERVQUAL instrument. The survey instrument also included five questions provided by the IS unit to evaluate the Oracle ERP system implemented in the organization. The questions included user friendliness, performance expectations, detailed analysis, timely processing of data and adequate security of the system. The findings based on the overall organization suggest that although service quality is below expectations the gaps are not generally significant, i.e. equal to or greater than one (1). The analysis however based on business units provides more revealing information.

Human beings take advantage of their high visual acuity to perform many daily activities required of them. Specifically, normal visual acuity is a pre-requisite for proper usage of most contemporary Graphic User Interfaces. The most common forms of visual acuity loss are myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Contact lenses or glasses can easily correct these simple visual aberrations. There exist, however, more complex aberrations that cannot be easily remedied by such means. These "high-order" aberrations are modeled through what is known as the Point Spread Function (PSF) of the human eye. The PSF can be obtained indirectly through the wavefront aberration function of the human eye, currently accessible through wavefront analyzers. Thus, it is feasible that with the knowledge of the PSF, digital images could be altered according to a transformation opposite to the one they suffer in an aberrated eye. Consequently, when they are displayed to the user, he /she will perceive them undistorted. This paper presents an image processing approach, based on deconvolution of the PSF from the intended computer images that achieves this objective. The theoretical foundation of the approach is introduced along with simulation results using actual PSFs from subjects. © 2005 ieee.

Space Vector Modulation (SVM) Technique has become the most popular and important PWM technique for three phase Voltage Source Inverters for the control of AC Induction, Brushless DC, Switched Reluctance and Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors. This paper proposes a new software implementation for Two Level Inverter using Space Vector Modulation technique. This software implementation is performed by combining Matlab and Psim software packages. The switching pattern generation and sector identification for space vector modulation technique is generated using list of Matlab codes. SimCoupler module provides interface between Matlab/Simulink and Psim software packages for cosimulation. The definite pattern for switching the voltage source inverter is provided using the software packages. The simulation study of space vector modulation technique of two level Inverter reveals that space vector modulation technique utilizes DC bus voltage more efficiently and generates less harmonic distortion when compared with SPWM technique. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the validity of space vector modulation technique. ©2005 ieee.
