Most 3d sketching tools for Virtual Reality (VR) rely on traditional features, like scaling and translating the environment with the hands and viewing the environment using a first-person (1PP) point of view (POV). Yet, VR can enhance the artist’s experience in ways impossible in the physical environment. These novel ways to perceive the sketch might influence users’ behaviours, positively affecting the sketching quality anduser experience. In a within-participants user study, we explore the possibilities of using different POVs for sketching by comparing three different perspectives, including first-person POV (1PP), third-person POV (3PP), and multiple third-person POV (M3PP). We collecteddata on their task performance and subjective experience to evaluate the impact of these perspectives on users’ ability to sketch in VR. Our results reveal that POV notably affects user performance.

Metaverse platforms are rapidly evolving to provide immersive spaces. However, the generation of dynamic and interactive 3d objects remains a challenge due to the need for advanced3d modeling and programming skills. We present MagicCraft, a system that generates functional 3d objects from natural language prompts. MagicCraft uses generative AI models to manage the entire content creation pipeline: converting user text descriptions into images, transforming images into 3d models, predicting object behavior, and assigning necessary attributes and scripts. It also provides an interactive interface for users to refine generated objects by adjusting features like orientation, scale, seating positions, and grip points.

We propose Metabook, a system to automatically generate interactive AR storybooks to improve children’s reading interest. Metabook introduces a story-to-3d-book generation scheme and a 3d avatar that combines multiple AI models as a reading companion. Our user study shows that Metabook can significantly increase children’s interest in reading. Teachers acknowledged Metabook’s effectiveness in enhancing reading enthusiasm by connecting verbal and visual thinking, expressing high expectations for its future potential in education.

Resulting from the earliest impactful color photography process developed by the Lumière Brothers, autochromes are invaluable historical artifacts with a high sensitivity and susceptibility to degradation over time. We investigate the potential of deep learning to enhance the experience of historical autochromes through 3d photography and Virtual Reality (VR). Our proposed pipeline utilizes single-image depth estimation anddepth-aware inpainting to transform digitized mono-autochromes into layereddepth images and corresponding 3d meshes, enabling immersive 3d visualization via a WebXR application. Our user study shows the effectiveness of VR-based experience of autochromes compared to traditional visualization methods, revealing that participants found the VR experience as pleasant as analog exploration despite the latter’s authenticity. Thereby, our findings suggest that 3d VR technology could play a crucial role in digitally preserving and revitalizing these culturally significant artifacts and foster investigations with more samples and more types of userinterfaces to mature these insights.

This paper presents Matrix, an advanced AI-powered framework designed for real-time 3d object generation in Augmented Reality (AR) environments. By integrating a cutting-edge text-to-3d generative AI model, multilingual speech-to-text translation, and large language models (LLMs), the system enables seamless user interactions through spoken commands. The framework processes speech inputs, generates 3d objects, and provides object recommendations based on contextual understanding, enhancing AR experiences. A key feature of this framework is its ability to optimize 3d models by reducing mesh complexity, resulting in significantly smaller file sizes and faster processing on resource-constrained AR devices. Our approach addresses the challenges of high GPU usage, large model output sizes, and real-time system responsiveness, ensuring a smoother user experience. Moreover, the system is equipped with a pre-generated object repository, further reducing GPU load and improving efficiency. We demonstrate the practical applications of this framework in various fields such as education, design, and accessibility, anddiscuss future enhancements including image-to-3d conversion, environmental object detection, and multimodal support. The open-source nature of the framework promotes ongoing innovation and its utility across diverse industries.
