Smart agriculture takes advantage of modern computational approaches that vary from IoT, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence. The primary aim is to assist the farming process. Pest detection is one of the objectives within the area of smart agriculture. It is mainly solved by computer vision approaches, usually combined with machine learning (ML) algorithms. In this paper, we propose a solution for detecting Arion rufus snails that have emerged in Central Europe and are one of the most prolific threats to agriculture in that place. Practical experiments reveal that our method is helpful in this real-world application and opens several future challenges and lines of research.

First Person vision (Egocentric) video analysis stands nowadays as one of the emerging fields in computer vision. The availability of wearable devices recording exactly what the user is looking at is ineluctable and the opportunities and challenges carried by this kind of devices are broad. Particularly, for the first time a device is so intimate with the user to be able to record the movements of his hands, making hand-based applications for First Person vision one the most explored area in the field. This paper explores the more popular processing steps to develop hand-based applications, and proposes a hierarchical structure that optimally switches between each of the levels to reduce the computational cost of the system and improve its performance.

A design of a high performance digital architecture for a nonlinear image enhancement technique is presented in this paper. The image enhancement is based on illuminance-reflectance model which improves the visual quality of digital images and video captured under insufficient or non-uniform lighting conditions [1]. Systolic, pipelined and parallel design techniques are utilized effectively in the proposed FPGA-based architectural design to achieve real-time performance. Estimation and folding techniques are used in the hardware algorithmic design to achieve faster, simpler and more efficient architecture. The video enhancement system is implemented using Xilinx's multimedia development board that contains a VirtexII-X2000 FPGA and it is capable of processing approximately 66 Mega-pixels (Mpixels) per second.

An investigation into computer vision techniques is conducted using a procedure from nonlinear dynamics termed "stochastic resonance." This work involves concepts from detection theory, information theory and nonlinear dynamics. An information distance metric is synthesized which helps define the dependent measure to be used with the stochastic resonance optimization. Monte Carlo simulations show the efficacy of the proposed method. A class of test objects are presented to fairly evaluate the utility of the proposed methods introduced.

In this paper a method to detect and classify typical electric power disturbances is presented. Voltage sags, swells, momentary outage and capacitor switching transient events (CSTs) are the electric disturbances considered in this work. Disturbance detection and some disturbance features are obtained by the discrete wavelet transform. These features are used in the design of a fuzzy rule classification system. Both methods, wavelet detection and the fuzzy classifier, are extensively tested on the detection and classification of several simulated electric disturbances. In particular, capacitor switching transients events (CSTs) are presented to validate the proposed methodologies. The performance of the wavelet-fuzzy logic system turned out to be 95% of correct identification. The performance of the fuzzy classifier outperforms a classifier based on crisp decisions also presented in this paper. This performance is acceptable compared with other methodologies reported in the literature with performances varying from 92% to 95%

Panoramic mosaics methods based on an 8-parameter planar homography matrix have to overcome the accumulated errors when a sequence of images loops back on itself. Usual methods are computationally intensive, and cannot ensure complete consistency of homographies. The paper presents a simple method which does not require the consistency of homographies. The method mainly exploits an un-calibrated image perspective interpolation technique (B. Yuan et al., 1998). It is therefore simple to calculate and easy to implement.

Data are the essential component in the pipeline of training a model that determines the performance of the model. However, there may not be enough data that meet the requirements of some tasks. In this paper, we introduce a knowledge distillation-based approach that mitigates the disadvantages of data scarcity. Specifically, we propose a method that boosts the pixel domain performance of a model, by utilizing compressed domain knowledge via cross distillation between these two modalities. To evaluate our approach, we conduct experiments on two computer vision tasks which are object detection and recognition. Results indicate that compressed domain features can be utilized for a task in the pixel domain via our approach, where data are scarce or not completely available due to privacy or copyright issues.

Beside their stunning graphics, modern entertainment systems feature ever-higher levels of immersive user-interaction. Today, this is mostly achieved by virtual (VR) and augmented reality (AK) setups. On top of these, we envision to add ambient intelligence and context awareness to gaming applications in general and games of martial arts in particular. To this end, we conducted an initial experiment with inexpensive body-worn gyroscopes and acceleration sensors for the chum kiu motion sequence in wing tsun (a popular form of kung fu). The resulting data confirm the feasibility of our vision. Fine-tuned adaptations of various thresholding and pattern-matching techniques known from the fields of computational intelligence and signal processing should suffice to automate the analysis and recognition of important wing tsun movements in real time. Moreover, the data also seem to allow for the possibility of automatically distinguishing between certain levels of expertise and quality in executing the movements.

Skin color is a useful means for human face detection. In this paper, we propose an efficient color compensation method for skin color segmentation under varying lighting conditions. One of the major problems of using skin color is that a face region may not be detected under poor or uneven lighting conditions. Our approach considers the distribution of the color components of skin pixels and the color response of capturing machines under different illuminations. Experimental results show that this algorithm can improve the performance of face segmentation under poor or strong lighting conditions.

Human pose estimation is an important research topic in the field of computer vision. Bottom-up methods such as OpenPose have become prevalent pose estimation methods because of its high efficiency and detection speed. But for poor quality video, the keypoints obtained by the bottom-up method have suffered from jitter and loss. In this paper, we propose DP-Pose, which constructs candidate pose sequence by selecting points in a region of the heatmap, improves constraint function by combining distance and confidence, and solves the optimal keypoints location by dynamic programming. The experimental results on class dataset show that DP-Pose can recover missing keypoint using heatmap data and obtain stable pose from candidate pose sequences.
