A description is given of KOLA, a knowledge representation system based on the structured-inheritance network paradigm. KOLA extends the expressive capabilities of the NIKL knowledge representation system without adversely affecting its computational tractability. The expressive constructs in KOLA are designed to facilitate the organization of domain knowledge that can be easily understood by humans and can be efficiently processed by computers. The need for the extensions is motivated through examples illustrating the limitations of NIKL. Formal semantics for these extensions, their implementation in KOLA, and examples of their use are presented.

A description of a medical expert system called the automated medical student (AMS) which attempts to combine models of learning with models of expert performance is presented. AMS's domain is the pediatric subspecialty of neonatology. Unlike traditional expert systems, which are built upon a knowledge base developed through some method of protocol analysis, AMS's knowledge base is acquired gradually through experience. AMS utilizes several expert systems and artificial intelligence methodologies, including rule- and frame-based reasoning, reasoning from first principles, and a connectionist network model of expert performance.

To show how neural nets work, experiences in an experiment using them are described. The experiment involves using AI techniques to assist in the discovery of causal relationships between the variables existing in a large clinical trial database. A peripheral vascular disease database was used to acquire a feeling for the complexities involved in developing a distributed encoding scheme and to determine the computational resources required to train a neural net for the type of data used. By testing several models the effects of changes in the encoding scheme and the number of training iterations the system needed to predict the appropriate change needed could be determined. These results were compared to the information available from other analyses of the same data. The generative capabilities of the system were then tested by training it over one sample of cases and applying it to cases it had not encountered before. Some idea of the computational resources needed in terms of time and memory capacity was developed.

The author describes a computer program in development, named Roundsman, which draws on structured representations of the clinical literature to critique plans for medical management. The goal of the Roundsman project is to model the process of reasoning from the clinical literature. There are many medical domains in which such reasoning dominates. It is therefore considered important to explore how a machine might assist a clinician in this literature-based reasoning process.

This book contains the best papers of the First International Joint Conference on B- medical Engineering Systems and Technologies (BIOSTEC 2008), organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information Control and Communication (INSTICC), technically co-sponsored by the ieee Engineering in Medicine and Bi- ogy Society (EMB), ACM SIGART and the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC), in cooperation with AAAI. The purpose of the International Joint Conference on Biomedical Engineering S- tems and Technologies is to bring together researchers and practitioners, including engineers, biologists, health professionals and informatics/computer scientists, int- ested in both theoretical advances and applications of information systems, artificial intelligence, signal processing, electronics and other engineering tools in knowledge areas related to biology and medicine. BIOSTEC is composed of three co-located conferences; each specializes in one of the aforementioned main knowledge areas, namely: • BIODEVICES (International Conference on Biomedical Electronics and - vices) focuses on aspects related to electronics and mechanical engineering, - pecially equipment and materials inspired from biological systems and/or - dressing biological requirements. Monitoring devices, instrumentation sensors and systems, biorobotics, micro-nanotechnologies and biomaterials are some of the technologies addressed at this conference.

This LNCS volume contains the papers presented at the second Workshop on Human Motion Understanding, Modeling, Capture and Animation, which took place on October 20th, 2007, accompanying the 11th ieee International C- ference on Computer Vision in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In total, 38 papers were submitted to this workshop,of which 22 papers were accepted. We were careful to ensure a high standard of quality when selecting the papers. All submissions were double-blind reviewed by at least two experts. Out of the 22 accepted papers, 10 were selected for oral presentation and 12 for posters. We thank the authors of the accepted papers for taking the reviewers’ comments into account in the ?nal published versions of their papers. We thank all of the authors who submitted their work, and we trust that the reviewers’ comments have been of value for their research activities. The accepted papers re?ect the state of the art in the ?eld and cover various topicsrelatedto *** have been classi?ed into three categories based on the topics they cover: human motion capture and pose estimation, body and limb tracking and segmentation, and activity recognition.

This book highlights recent advances in natural computing, including biology and its theory, bio-inspired computing, computational aesthetics, computational models and theories, computing with natural media, philosophy of natural computing, and educational technology. It presents extended versions of the best papers selected from the “8th International Workshop on Natural Computing” (IWNC8), a symposium held in Hiroshima, Japan, in 2014. The target audience is not limited to researchers working in natural computing but also includes those active in biological engineering, fine/media art design, aesthetics, and philosophy.
