This paper is a step forward by making real time control system design to monitor and control process variables to ensure its smooth operation and desired reliability. Liquid nitrogen level in the condenser is a core component of isotopic separation process to obtain ( 13 C), so is needed a special focus on monitoring and control. The goal of the work is to design a controller for the liquid nitrogen in the condenser of ( 13 C) isotope separation column using NI-PXI 1031 (PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation) from National Instruments. The designed ON-OFF controller is implemented in LabVIEW and are discussed the advantages and disadvantages.

The secondary processes in a pilot plant carbon isotope cryogenic separation column are multivariable time delay processes. In general, for these types of processes, Smith Predictor control schemes are frequently used, however they exhibit poor robustness due to the explicit use of the process model in the compensation loop and require additional control techniques to enhance robustness against modeling uncertainties. An alternative solution used in this paper is a predictive controller, with intrinsic time delay compensation. The simulations presented show that the predictive controller is also robust to significant time delay estimation errors, without further need to design additional filters for increasing robustness.

In the nodes of computer networks the Active Queue Management (AQM) is responsible for managing the messages to be transmitted. Because of the time required for this service the messages delay in the nodes. This delay is much larger than a message transmission time is. The delays of these services lead to the congestion problem. These services can be examined as typical control systems. Although studies indicate that in AQM systems a PI controller works better than a TCP/IP RED algorithm, in a simplified model of TCP these differences decrease the effectiveness of the controller which was designed by the classical control theory. In these cases the structure of the Differentiated Services is proposed to apply to achieve adequate levels of the QoS services in a TCP/IP network. In this article an AQM system is designed, which is met on the demands of intensive usage and it includes the round trip delays as well as detection of lost packets if any. To achieve our goals, a predictive sliding mode control system (SMC) is designed to control congestion. This control strategy helps us to take into consideration the effects of round trip time, too. Implementation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the controller in providing queue management.

The dynamic window approach to collision avoidance is a well-known method in the mobile robotics field. It provides an elegant way to navigate safely in the presence of obstacles, also taking the dynamic properties of the robot into account. There are different variants of this method, all having the same limitation, namely they use an objective function consisting of weighted terms. Different situations require different weights, however, there is no algorithm for choosing them. An inappropriate weighting can inhibit reaching the goal. This paper presents a navigation scheme based on the idea of dynamic window approach (DWA) and using receding horizon control (RHC). This method uses an objective function that does not contain weights. Kinematic and dynamic constraints of the robot are taken into account and a safe and goal-oriented motion is ensured.

The agent's decision mechanism should take into account only the events which can influence the agent's decision. That is way it is necessary to embed the event processing technology into multi-agent systems decision mechanism. From the stimuli received by the agent, there are selected only the ones which can influence their behaviour and based on this information the complex event processing module gives as output complex events. These complex events result from a series of operations like grouping, aggregation, sorting, filtering, merging, splitting or duplication of events. To study the CEP performance embedded into multi-agent systems decision mechanism the method presented in this paper is applied in a traffic control application.

This paper focuses on developing a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) system for a boiler-turbine process, employing decoupled adaptive control based on gain scheduling technique. The used model is a 3 × 3 non-linear strongly coupled system adapted to fit a real thermal power plant of 16 MW. The main purpose of this work lies in implementing, comparing and validating the proposed HIL method over classic simulation methods applied on the present complex structure, rather than analyzing control system performance (which was studied in a previous paper). The proposed investigation contains two sections for integration: i) simulation environment for the boiler-turbine process carried out using Labview running on a PC under a general purpose operating system, and ii) control algorithms implemented on industrial real-time Siemens programmable logic controller (PLC). The control algorithms are made in two different ways: by Labview Virtual Instruments (VI) on PC, and by ladder-logic program on PLC, for comparison purpose. Data exchange between parties is provided by an OLE for process control server (OPC Server) at the software level, and by an Industrial Ethernet bus at the physical level. The synchronization between PLC and PC, which does not have a real-time operating system, was a challenge. Test results show that the proposed HIL method is validated even in these conditions.

The paper proposes a cost-effective Takagi-Sugeno state feedback fuzzy controller (T-S SFFC) meant for speed control of brushless direct current (BLDC) drives. The simplified process models of BLDC drives at several operating points are characterized by second-order linear dynamics with an integral component and variable parameters. The discrete-time dynamic Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy models of the process are derived by the modal equivalence principle to merge the discrete-time linear process models in the rule consequents. The parallel distributed compensation is applied to obtain the state feedback gain matrices in the rule consequents of the T-S SFFC which shares the same inference engine, defuzzification method and input membership functions with the Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy models of the process. The T-S SFFC merges a set of separately pole placement-based designed local linear state feedback controllers in the rule consequents. A system of linear matrix inequalities is solved in the design of the T-S SFFC to guarantee the global stability of the fuzzy control system.

Telesurgery means the remote application of interventional medical techniques; a concept that is currently widely practiced around the world for short distance through master-slave robot systems. The concept has the potential to service long distance telesurgery as well. However, this requires the effective handling of communication latency. The current paper suggests a fuzzy control solution for telesurgical applications aiming at the alleviation of the disturbing effects of large latencies with the concept of remote surgical robotics. The fuzzy control solution is supported by a cascade control system structure with two proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers in the inner and outer control loops and designed by Kessler's Extended Symmetrical Optimum empirical criteria. The PID controller in the outer loop is next replaced by Takagi-Sugeno-Kong PID-fuzzy controllers which combine several separately designed PID controllers. The combination of separately designed PID controllers and the modal equivalence principle are expressed as a design and tuning method of the Tagaki-Sugeno-Kong PID-fuzzy controllers.

The development of electronic technology today has allowed the implementation of complex architectures, which led to the emergence of multicore processors technology. Multicore architectures are built from superscalar and multithreaded processors. Integrating new technologies in embedded applications requires the development of multicore processors that can be integrated into a smaller area like a classic microcontroller. These processors must manage fewer resources and be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. In this paper we present a method of modeling, simulation and evaluation of two multithreaded architectures with limited resources, which could be integrated into embedded systems: Interleaved multithreading (IMT) and Blocked multithreading (BMT). Both techniques permit the processing of multiple independent threads, concurrently. In this paper we propose a SimpleScalar Interleaved Multithreading architecture (SS-IMT) and a SimpleScalar Blocked Multithreading architecture (SS-BMT) that are derived from SimpleScalar simulator. We will evaluate the performances of these architectures compared to the performance of standard SimpleScalar architecture.
