In this paper a method for fault diagnosis and control reconfiguration in dynamic systems is presented. The proposed approach is composed of two steps. In the event of a fault, the first step is the detection of the failed component, and the estimation of the fault parameters. The second step consists of the design of a new control structure which implicitly reconfigures the control law using the online estimates of the altered system dynamics. The application to a winding machine is presented to illustrate the proposed approach.

In this paper, the robust fault-tolerant control problem is formulated in an linear matrix inequality (LMI) setting, in which satisfactory performance and guarantees stability robustness are introduced. To achieve both performance and stability robustness, a multiobjective approach is used to establish a matrix inequality formulation for fault-tolerant control system design which is based on the assumption that both fault effect factors and uncertainties can be of linear-fractional-transformation parameter dependence. An example of flight control system is used to demonstrates the design technique presented in this paper.

Two major algorithmic tools associated with multiresolutional systems are discussed in this lecture: 1) "Multiresolutional Formation of the Motion Trajectory," and 2) "Synthesis of Possible Worlds". The first tool contains a family of niultiresolutional algorithms applicable for motion planning and control. It focuses upon imagining changes and is actively helpful for reasoning about actions. They are supported by and associated with many auxiliary multiresolutional algorithms of perception, estimation and information organization. The second tool focuses upon creation of new states and objects. It is concerned with the mechanisms of imagination which are supposed to be embodied by the system of goal planning as a component of each intelligent s,ystem. At the present time, we are capable of some rudimentary capabilities to synthesize the alternatives for objects and processes of the reality in a joint functioning of these two tools. The paper outlines the calculus of this synthesis. The views presented in this lecture are oriented toward multiple practices of various Life domains. Somehow, in all cases, the multiresolutional approach turns out to be productive as follows from the examples.

We present the basis of the original autonomous adaptive control (AAC) methodology. It is an approach to the design of intelligent systems that simulate structure and functions of the nervous system and brain. The AAC methodology idea is that structure and functions of the nervous system are forced to follow the control system conditions at an initial moment. The initial conditions are: (a) the control system (CS) is a discrete device; (b) the CS is located inside of the controlled object; (c) the CS has minimum initial knowledge. We briefly described the AAC CS structure and functions. The AAC CS can be made, for example, in neural networks form.

The combination of hybrid systems and fuzzy multiple model systems is described. Further, a hierarchical identification of the resulting fuzzy switched hybrid system is outlined. The behavior of the discrete component is identified by black box fuzzy clustering and subsequent parameter identification taking into account some prior-knowledge about the discrete states. The identification of the continuous models for each discrete state is done based on local linear fuzzy models.

Functions of the limbic system are analyzed based on previously published ideas that all hierarchical levels of the nervous system are built according to the same functional principles: each level is a learning system that contains a model of object behavior and receives two types of afferent signals: initiating and informational. It is shown how each limbic hierarchical level adds new controlling abilities to the system by using the available surrounding visceral and somatic automatisms. Each of these levels has its own control specificity and semantics of afferent and efferent signals. The control system, its controlled object, the corresponding initiating and informational inputs, etc., are described for each hierarchical level.

More and more, the organizations' requirements are competition, work process execution costs reduction and development of new products and services. To meet these requirements, workflow technology provides methodologies and software for the processing of activities. Our researches aim at providing a support for parallel workflows applications with new activities representation models and software architectures for performing the desired functionalities. We introduce an ontology for the representation of parallel workflows activities and a software agent architecture which meet the needs of these systems by encapsulating several agents in the same structure.

This paper presents a multiresolutional architecture of planners for obstacle avoidance in outdoor mobility. The planner makes use of off-line dynamical simulations results to efficiently find paths that avoid obstacles. The trajectories are generated by sets of steering velocity commands. This approach of building the search space for the planner results in realistic cost and trajectories for the vehicle. An implementation of the planner was developed and tested in a vehicle at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) with promising results.

A new method for synthesis of mixed H/sub 2//H/sub /spl infin// controllers is presented in this paper. The problem is formulated as the minimization of a nominal H/sub 2/ performance index subject to a H/sub /spl infin// robust stability constraint. The novel method based on two real-coded genetic algorithms (GA) with appropriate operators and a penalty function is proposed for the solution of the optimization problem. Simulation results are given to illustrate the new approach, and to show the validity of the proposed synthesis method.

We give a general sketch of the architecture of the dynamical processes that make it possible for a natural system to interact semiotically with its environment. The two foci are on the relation the semiotic characteristics bear to the internal dynamical processes that enable them, and on the manner in which material interactions become conceptualised. The paper is in two parts. In the first one, the dynamical profile of energetically complex systems is introduced to show the manner in which emergent properties are related to those of their material substrate in natural systems. The second part is devoted to a sketch of the manner in which information, in the sense of Shannon, is transformed into the semiotic dimensions of intelligence. In a brief coda, the value of this analysis is shown to lie in the fact that the only systems that can be said to be semiotic in the full sense of this expression are natural ones, and that any modelling of these processes is bound to be constrained by the laws which govern their natural expressions.
