Automatically adapting game content to players opens new doors for game development. In this paper we propose an architecture using persona agents and experience metrics, which enables evolving procedurally generated levels tailored for particular player personas. Using our game, “Grave Rave”, we demonstrate that this approach successfully adapts to four rule-based persona agents over three different experience metrics. Furthermore, the adaptation is shown to be specific in nature, meaning that the levels are persona-conscious, and not just general optimizations with regard to the selected metric.

The vehicle routing problem is an interesting and challenging combinatorial problem studied for over more than sixty years since the work of Dantzig and Ramser. Research has been devoted to this problem and its variants, generating many approaches based on metaheuristics. Among these, the Hybrid Genetic Search with an Adaptive Diversity control (HGSADC) stood as the state-of-the-art for many years. In this sense, this research presents a study on the impact analysis of a Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP) to initialize the HGSADC in the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP). Our initialization approach combines our GRASP with the efficient Split algorithm. The conducted experiments on the well-known Golden et al. (1998) and Uchoa et al. (2017) benchmark, and the results support that our approach has interesting points and outstanding results, improving 13 of 120 instances.

Both Augmented Reality (AR) and Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) have drawn a lot of attention in recent applications. These two new technologies will significantly impact and develop interactions between human and intelligent agents. While there are several studies already conducted in the control of devices using AR based, steady state visually evoked potentials (SSVEP) control systems in a lab environment, this study seeks to implement a portable, closed-loop, AR-based BCI to assess the feasibility of controlling a physical device through SSVEP. This portable, closed-loop AR-based BCI provides users with the unique opportunity to simultaneously interact with the surrounding environment and control autonomous agents with an 88% accuracy. The potential benefits of this application include reduced restrictions on handicapped individuals or concurrent control of multiple devices through a single AR interface. Ultimately, we hope this outcome can bridge the BCI field with further real-world, practical applications.

Multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system controls are more difficult than single-input single-output (SISO) systems because any input change affects all outputs due to internal interference of MIMO systems. We proposed a regulator and output tracking controller for MIMO discrete-time nonlinear systems using piecewise multilinear (PML) system. The PML model is constructed using only the vertex values of piecewise hypercube regions. Input-output feedback linearization was used to transform each PML system into one linearized system represented by the Brunovsky canonical form. We showed that the proposed method was effective in some examples by computer simulations. The proposed design method can be applied to any nonlinear system whose relative degree is the same as the dimension of the state variable, and can control the wider regions of nonlinear control systems compared with conventional feedback linearization. Since the modeling is simple and independent of the characteristics of the system model, it may contribute to the realization of any nonlinear control system design.

The occurrence of hazardous gases and toxic or harmful vapors in laboratories, factories, and chemical warehouses requires a fast detection of leakage accidents to avoid health impairments. In this paper, the integration and validation of two novel metal oxide gas sensors (MOX) for the application in an IoT-based air quality monitoring and the alarming system is proposed. The sensors are combined with WeMos D1 Mini IoT-based microcontroller for data processing and transmitting via Wi-Fi communication protocol. The system design takes into consideration the low-cost, light-weight, small-size, and low power consumption concepts to enable a portable compact system that can be operated stand-alone or easily be adapted to any stationary or mobile robotic platform. The system was tested with several volatile organic materials (VOCs). The acquired air quality data are transferred to an IoT cloud, where the data are stored in a database for further analysis and research. Further, the data can be directly monitored on a PC, tablet, and smartphone. The system testing results confirm that the system can be used efficiently in laboratory environments.

Highly accurate and efficient map in unknown and complex environments is essential for robotics navigation. Traditionally, mobile robot platforms are often computationally constrained when using multiple sensors to process large amounts of input data. In previous works, some of them have been deployed to embedded platforms in real-time. However, how to balance accuracy and efficiency while reducing the computational resources and the memory footprint is still the bottleneck. Motivated by these challenges, we proposed a mapping framework called VDBblox to incrementally build Euclidean Signed Distance Fields (ESDFs) map from Truncated Signed Distance Fields (TSDFs) mapping. We use a novel weight function to update the non-projective TSDFs, thus improving the quality of the mesh reconstruction with higher accuracy than up-to-date methods. Meanwhile, the generated ESDFs map is maintained by the least recently used (LRU) cache to dynamically handle the obstacle changes with less runtime than state-of-the-art. We show VDBblox performance in terms of accuracy and efficiency by benchmark comparison on RGB-D and LiDAR public datasets. Moreover, we demonstrate that VDBblox can be integrated into a completed quadrotor system as a sub-module. Then we validate it through online obstacle avoidance and high-quality mesh reconstruction in real-world experiments. This paper proposes a novel optimal gain design method for robust fault detection using set-valued observers. First, a new fault detection performance specification is proposed for set-valued observers based on a new notion named the excluding degree of the origin from a zonotope. Second, a fractional programming problem is formulated to describe fault detection optimality of set-valued observers. Third, optimal fault detection gains are obtained by solving the fractional programming problem. Finally, numerical examples are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

An increasing demand for mobility in urban areas leads to several issues such as traffic congestion. While many approaches exist to tackle this problem, a popular one is the adaptive control of traffic signals. This paper focuses on reinforcement learning based approaches for adaptive control. These use learning agents that act individually to adapt the signal timings to the current demand of vehicles crossing an intersection. However, in a network of intersections (thus constituting a multiagent reinforcement learning problem), as the actions of each agent have impact on the states, actions, and rewards of others, it is clear that there is a relevant non-local issue that is rarely dealt with. Thus, this paper proposes a joint learning approach in which agents learn in groups, besides also learning an individual policy. This means that we have two parallel learning processes. The group policy is implemented from time to time, thus helping agents to implicitly consider other agents' policies. A distinguishing feature of our approach is that it is not based on fixed membership in such groups; rather, groups are formed and dissolved on demand, based on their performance. Results of applying this approach are compared to a baseline and to when agents learn individually only, showing that the joint learning leads to lesser waiting time.

As an enabling technology in robotic harvesting, an end-effector requires precise positioning and picking without bruising strawberries or sabotaging strawberry beds. Here, an end-effector design with a spiral-curve tooth is presented, which can contain strawberries in a spherical shell before pulling them away from their stems. Visual feedback with a camera-in-hand configuration is used to identify strawberries of sufficient size and ripeness. A two-step estimation and control approach is proposed including aligning the end-effector with the target strawberries in the $X$ and $Y$ directions and then reaching them along the $Z$ direction. Specifically, the control logic is designed to correct the depth error based on the changing rate of a strawberry diameter in the pixel frame. The unique feature of this approach is that it can precisely move the end-effector to the desired position regardless of the initial depth and size of the target. The end-effector, XYZ table, and control algorithm were extensively tested in an artificial strawberry bed and also partially experimented in a commercial farm.
