Having an idea of a user's location when he/she is using network services has been an area of interest ever since wireless networks became very popular. As the costs of wireless technologies decrease more and more, we observe the rise of an extremely diverse market of wireless capable devices. However, the field of indoor positioning is still wide open. In this field, most of the existing technologies are dependent on additional hardware and/or infrastructure, which increases the requirements for users. In this research, we investigate the ways of coupling indoor geo-fencing with access control including authentication and registration. To achieve this, we apply a classification based geo-fencing approach using received signal strength indicator. Consequently, we are mainly focusing on associating accurate geo-fencing with secure communication and computing. Experimental results show that we have achieved considerable positioning accuracy while providing a secure way of communication. Favouring diversity, our implementation does not mandate users to undergo any system software modification or adding new hardware components.

A fuzzy controller is proposed to solve the local control for a multi-chain robotic system formed by tentacle manipulators grasping a common object with hard point contacts. The two-level hierarchical control is adopted. The upper level coordinator gathers all the necessary information to resolve the force distribution. Then, the lower-level local control problem is treated as a open chain redundant manipulator control problem. A closed loop control based on the inverse dynamic model and the direct sliding mode control procedure are proposed. The fuzzy rules are established. Simulation results are presented and discussed.

This paper deals with the derivation of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) model in alpha-beta coordinate system. The exact model of PMSM is essential for rotor position and speed estimation algorithms. Information about the rotor position is necessary even to be able to control drive speed. Extended Kalman filter (EKF) was used to estimate the rotor position. Conventional algorithms based on EKF are developed using a simple model of permanent magnet synchronous motor (L d = L q = L s ), thereby they provide bad performance in the low speeds. Extended mathematical performance in the (L d ≠ L q ≠ L s ) makes possible for EKF to operate in low speeds, because information about rotor position is contained in changes of stator inductance.

Voltage Source Converter (VSC) based High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology is a very attractive power transmission technology. The VSC based HVDC transmission uses IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) switches having turn-on and turn-off capability and having special characteristics compared to Current Source Converter (CSC) based conventional HVDC technology. Among various control methodologies used for VSC based HVDC, vector control, nonlinear control and independent P-Q controller based on analytic expressions have been developed and analyzed in this work for sending end control station 1. Similarly, in the receiving end station 2, DC and AC voltage controllers are realized with traditional PI controllers have been analyzed. The performance of the proposed controller has been investigated under different operating conditions including post fault recovery. The effectiveness of the proposed various controllers are demonstrated through digital simulation studies on VSC-HVDC transmission system, using PSCAD/EMTDC software package under short time Line-Ground fault in both AC systems in two terminal VSC - HVDC systems.

Functional Dependency extraction is a useful way to find inherent rules that apply in a given dataset. However, not all of such rules are exact, datasets comprised of real-world measurements can often contain rules that are supported by a significant portion of the dataset (so-called Approximate Functional Dependencies), with only a few exceptions. Extracting such rules is also very beneficial, e.g. for estimating the achievable classification precision on a dataset. Sequential Indexing Tables (SITs) are an extended version of Lookup Tables, in which multidimensional problem space is broken down to a sequence of 1D and 2D lookup tables, where each member of the sequence forms a layer and processes the values of one given attribute. In this paper, a SIT -based dependency extractor is proposed that can be used to extract Approximate Functional Dependencies from datasets.

It is well known that beyond the fact that fuzzy systems have favorable modeling capabilities from the viewpoint of accuracy, they also have outstanding inherent interpretability possibilities, which is a rather unique property among modeling architectures and which is a strong motivation for their research and application. This paper focuses on both mentioned property types and proposes a new technique for adjusting between accuracy and interpretability in modeling systems where fuzzy rule based architectures together with evolutionary algorithms are used for knowledge extraction. First, an inconsistency problem of conventional interpretable fuzzy systems is resolved. Then, a new search space narrowing technique for evolutionary algorithms is proposed, which can be applied for constructing interpretable fuzzy rule bases. Finally, the favorable properties of this new approach will be verified experimentally by carrying out simulation runs.

We have established an emotional model to enhance a virtual worker simulation, which could be also used to support robots in a joined human-robot work-task inside an industrial setting. The robot is able to understand people's individual and specific knowledge as well as capabilities, which are ultimately linked to an emotional consequence. As a result, the emotional model outputs the emotional valence calculated as positive or negative values, respective to reward and punishment. This output is applied as value function for a reinforcement learning agent. There we use an actor critic algorithm extended by eligibility traces and task specific conditions to learn the optimal action sequences. We show the influence of emotional reward leads to differences in the learned action sequences in comparison to a simple task performance evaluation reward. Therefore the robot is able to calculate emotional feelings of a human during a given working task, is able to decide if there is a better, more emotional stable path to doing this working task and moreover the robot is able to decide when the human is needed help or even not.

Social networks analysis is an emergent field of science which aims to study, model, and predict processes and relationships found in nature through the usage of graphs. To that end, since the discovery of fundamental properties like small-world effect and preferential attachment, the last decade has witnessed a boom of more fine-tuned, more complex social network models. Despite of a plethora of existing models for social evolution and behavior, none have come close enough to model the real world societies we live in. This paper proposes to study nine of the most relevant state-of-the-art network models and classify them based on their real-world fidelity. As such, we introduce three empirical datasets: Facebook, Google Plus and Twitter online networks, and use them as references for computing realism. As a mathematical tool, we use network motifs and compute the similarity using the referenced fidelity metric φ. Our results showcase a new perspective on how one can compare and assess synthetic network models, and we find that some networks are indeed better substitutes for real-world networks (e.g. cellular networks have a realism of 68%), while others are weak substitutes (e.g. scale-free networks have a realism of 29%).

Interval multi-objective optimization problems (IMOPs) are ubiquitous and challenging. There are many optimizers for solving them;however, their drawbacks, such as the high computational cost and big uncertainty of the final front, hinder their applications in real-world situation. This paper proposes a surrogate-assisted interval multi-objective memetic algorithm (SA-IMOMA) that incorporates a surrogate model into the local search. In the framework of interval multi-objective memetic algorithms (IMOMAs), the fitness function of a local search is first defined by both the contribution of an individual to hyper-volume and the imprecision of the individual, and then a support vector machine (SVM) is trained and employed to evaluate local individuals so as to cut down the high computational cost of IMOMAs and further reduce the imprecision of the final front. The proposed algorithm was tested on 10 benchmark IMOPs and an IMOP in solar desalination. The empirical results indicate that SA-IMOMA is more economical than non-surrogate IMOMAs and superior to non-local-search IP-MOEA.

This paper is concerned with the detection of actuator faults in nonlinear systems. With the theoretical development of sophisticated fault detection and isolation (FDI) approaches, the implementation of FDI algorithms is, however, often constrained by the available computational power. On the other side, in many practical applications, in order to avoid extra hardware and investment, FDI algorithms often share processor with control algorithms. Such a background motivates the study in this paper, namely, whether part of the controller information can be utilized to simplify the FDI algorithm and thus promote the application of FDI technique in industry. In the context of inverse dynamics controller a positive answer is provided by the investigation in this paper
