Magnetometers are widely used in sensor fusion frameworks of mobile robots due to their ability to work as compasses. The measurements of these sensors are largely influenced by hard iron and soft iron effects that are caused by nearby ferromagnetic objects. In this paper, an artificial neural network (ANN)-based method is proposed for the identification of such effects, which can be compensated from the measurements. The method utilizes both the distance and the angle of the detected object based on the coordinate frame of the mobile robot as the inputs of the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) ANN. The MLP provides on its outputs the disturbance levels in the three axes, which need to be subtracted from the measurements to obtain the compensated values. The method was tested with three different types of objects to evaluate the performance of the method. Measurements were collected using an industrial robotic arm in a grid around the objects. The disturbance levels generated by the objects were computed by subtracting measurements recorded in an undisturbed scenario. Three-layer MLPs were tested with various numbers of hidden layer neurons to find the optimal configurations. The achieved results show that the disturbance levels can be significantly decreased using the proposed method.

Jupyter Notebook [1] is an open source, interactive computing platform widely used in the scientific computing and artificial intelligence community [2], [3], [4], [5]. The popularity of the platform is a consequence of the generated single notebook document combining source code, markdown, and visualizations (Fig.1). This makes the platform ideal for tasks such as data analysis and scientific image processing, where repeatability and transparency of analysis tasks are just as important as functionality and performance. However, the obligatory use of code is an obstacle to acceptance of the platform in scientific communities where programming is not generally taught in the curriculum. Consequently, many experimental communities rely on manual image processing using graphical user interfaces [6], [7], [8]. The obvious disadvantages are the lack of repeatability, transparency, and precision in image processing and data analysis tasks. To solve these issues, we propose to extend Jupyter Notebook with visual programming cells. In each visual programming cell, users can create the program by assembling graphical nodes that represent computational instructions, and the textual program is automatically generated and executed by the environment. Cells will support version control aware serialization and deserialization. The core innovation of our proposed work lies in a change of workflow and the adaption of a jupyter-based workflow in experimental communities that have no culture of working with source code. The system can be adapted to multiple applications and domains by integrating new node types. We hereby present an early version of the system and provide one use case from microscopy image processing to demonstrate the integration of existing non-Python software.

Detection transformers (DETRs) have achieved remarkable results, but they still face challenges in generalizing to complex environments. Existing approaches primarily emphasize specific computational structural design but overlook the overall improvement of encoder structure. To improve the detection accuracy of DETR in complex environments, we propose a self-distillated DETR, which enhances encoder structural feature extraction through self-distillation. First, we develop an encoder feature self-distillation architecture, which performs deep-layer to shallow-layer knowledge transfer in the encoder structure without external instructor guidance. Second, we design the feature distillation loss function, which guides shallow encoders to acquire deep encoder feature extraction capability. We use the smoothed gradient squared deviation to calculate the corresponding token feature differences. We conduct experiments using the public object detection dataset MS COCO and the natural wildlife dataset WAID to verify the model's accuracy. The results of the experiment show the proposed model's effectiveness in multiple precision metrics.

Due to its non-destructive nature, research of Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is still receiving a great deal of attention in many areas of application. The advantage of the method over density-based methods (e. g. acoustic, optical measurements, etc.) is that it also allows to deduce the chemical properties of the examined material. In this article, our research group examines a new approach on the implementation of the method. Consequently, by modeling the studied material, which can be considered as a continuum, as a linear network with concentrated parameters, we would like to determine the weights on the branches of the graph, i.e. the resistances in our article. After defining the mathematical model, we created a physical model in order to validate the self-developed algorithm. We used a precision measurement procedure to calculate the resistance values placed on the branches of the graph.

Compact facial landmark sequences have been proven to characterize the complex dynamics associated with facial expressions effectively. We formulated driver drowsiness detection under the multivariate time series classification (MTSC) paradigm. Assigning drowsiness labels to short time intervals is sensitive enough to recover drivers' vigilance. To accommodate the constrained computational demand on embedded devices, we propose DrowsyNet, a dilated LSTM-FCN, to tackle MTSC by featuring its dilated LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) and dilated FCN (Fully Convolutional Network) with low computational complexity. The dilated LSTM focuses on modeling long-term dependencies, while the dilated FCN specializes in extracting interactive patterns from multivariate dimensions. Our empirical evidence indicates that facial landmark sequences of length 8 are sufficient to sort the driving behaviors into desired class labels unambiguously. Quantitative analysis demonstrates that DrowsyNet effectively classifies facial landmark sequences by achieving an impressive classification accuracy of 86.90% and efficiently yields an inference speed of 15 frames per second on Firefly RK3399pro embedded boards. Besides, the optimal facial landmark quantities and their relative feature importance were empirically determined. Finally, class activation maps (CAMs) visually confirm the most contributing regions on facial landmark sequences for driver drowsiness detection. © 2022 ieee.

One of the important directions of the digital trends defining our everyday life is the integration of smart devices into our systems, so that thanks to this we can collect more and more detailed data and control certain units remotely or automatically. As a result, our systems, which until now only operated in an isolated environment, are now connected to external services, or even establish a network connection to the Internet. However, this can have serious and dangerous consequences, pronounced in the case of systems that are considered critical infrastructure, because the wider the network range achieved, the more vulnerabilities and security gap can appear in the systems. In this article, we will present some options for network-based data collection methods, as well as highlight their most important properties and their parameters, which are useful to consider when planning a network system.

There is a significant lag between the year a great idea is first proposed and the year it is eventually adopted and mainstreamed. The foundations of the Internet of Things (IoT) were introduced between 1960 and 1980, the concept was introduced in 1990, and its growth and expansion came after 2000. Proliferation and discussions on standardization were proposed after another 10 years. IoT evolution and development are tightly coupled to cloud-fog-edge architectures with the assumption that a significant amount of advanced processing occurs not on IoT devices but on clouds and fog. However, as the technology evolved, the required amount of data and connections indicated that previous ideas and concepts were not realistic and that data processing at the edge layer was required.

For wastewater treatment plants, a large number of process variables are demanded to monitor the operation of the system. Given the problem that some key water quality variables are difficult to get in real-time, a soft-sensor technology is devised to get the value of these variables. For a soft-sensor model, choosing the appropriate input variables will have a great impact on its performance. In this paper, automatic relevance determination (ARD) method which based on Gaussian process regression (GPR) is proposed to select the appropriate input variables. The ARD method considers the nonlinear mapping relationship from input variables to the output variable. Moreover, the wastewater treatment plant is modeled by GPR, which requires fewer model parameters and can give a confidence interval. Finally, an example of the wastewater treatment plant is used to prove the effectiveness of the method. © 2022 ieee.
