Thyroid nodules are among the most common endocrine complaints in the world. Modern imaging techniques such as ultrasound (US), computerized tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have revealed more thyroid nodules incidentally. Therefore segmentation and quantification of them are very important for the treatment. In this paper, we have proposed a medical image processing application that can be accessed over internet by android based mobile devices. The proposed system can be thought as a decision/diagnosis support system for physicians. The aim the study is the segmentation and quantification of the crossectional areas of the thyroid nodules. The analysis results are generated and compared with the manually segmented nodule areas by using Zijdenbos Similarity Index (ZSI) on a server. The android based mobile devices are employed as clients to reach the related medical data and analysis results over internet. Obtained ZSI values have shown that proposed methodology can be used as a decision support tool for thyroid nodule evaluation with average 90% ZSI segmentation accuracy. The obtained results showed that proposed methodology will contribute to the medical image processing issues on mobile devices and help physicians to access the system via mobile devices.

Blood Oxygen Concentration and Physiological Data Changes During Motion While Wearing Face Masks

The study of physiological changes recorded by wearable devices during physical exercises belongs to very important research topics in neurology for the detection of motion disorders or monitoring of the fitness level during sports activities. This paper contributes to this area with studies of the effect of face masks and respirators on blood oxygen concentration, breathing frequency, and the heart rate changes. Experimental data sets include 296 segments of their total length of 60 hours, recorded on a home exercise bike under different motion conditions. Wearable instruments with oximetric, heart rate, accelerometric, and thermal camera sensors were used to fill the own database of signals recorded with selected sampling frequencies. The proposed methodology includes fundamental signal and image processing methods for signal analysis and machine learning tools for labeling image components and detecting facial temperature changes. Results show the minimal effect of mask wearing on blood oxygen concentration but its substantial influence on the breathing frequency and the heart rate. The use of a respirator substantially increased the respiratory rate for the given set of experiments under the load. This indicates how wearable sensors, computational intelligence, and machine learning can be used for motion monitoring and data analysis of signals recorded in different conditions.

image processing is a method to perform some operations on an image, to either enhance the image or to extract some useful information from it. It is a type of signal processing with an image as input and output in the form of an image or characteristics/features associated with that image. Nowadays, image processing, and digital image processing at that is among rapidly growing technologies. The article deals with image processing, specifically focuses on recognizing objects - cars in 2D image frames through IP cameras. The practical part deals with the implementation of algorithms from the Open CV library designed for vehicle recognition on a large parking lot in order to find the actual occupancy of the parking lot. The occupancy results of the parking rate converted to percentages are displayed on the web portal.

Estimating nutrient content in plants is a crucial task in the application of precision farming. This work will be more challenging if it is conducted nondestructively based on plant images captured in the field due to the variation of lighting conditions. This paper proposes a computational intelligence image processing to analyze nitrogen status in wheat plants. We developed an ensemble of deep learning multilayer perceptron-using committee machines for color normalization and image segmentation. This paper also focuses on building a genetic-algorithm-based global optimization to fine tune the color normalization and nitrogen estimation results. We discovered that the proposed method can successfully normalize plant images by reducing color variabilities compared to other color normalization techniques. Furthermore, this algorithm is able to enhance the nitrogen estimation results compared to other non-global optimization methods as well as the most renowned SPAD meter based nitrogen measurement.

This paper presents a new generic algorithm for image interpolation as well as lossless image coding. Main motivation behind the work is to reduce computational complexity involved in using Least Square Error Minimization (LS). The proposed method down samples the given image to its quarter size and then to its (1/16)th size. For each downsampled image, the least Square predictors are then obtained corresponding to pixels belonging to each bin. Thus, these predictors are used to synthetically generate a set of optimal predictors corresponding to each bin of the original image. Our proposed algorithm thus reduces 60% to 70% of computational complexity. We also observed that proposed algorithm gives insignificant loss in terms of compression ratio as compared with some of the previous works reported in literature.

The role of superficial geology of the subsoil in studies of seismic microzonation is of great interest because it is a latent threat before an earthquake. With non-invasive techniques, the behavior of seismic waves can be inferred by studying the ways they propagate. The Nakamura technique (H/V) is the most used in order to identify the natural frequency of the site in the seismic microzonation studies. This technique allows to know the surface geology through experimental in-site data and implementing computational techniques. In this paper, records of environmental seismic noise were used for the extraction of characteristics of each of the signal components. The H/V curves allowed to identify the peaks in the frequency range from 0,1 to 10 Hz. A clustering technique has been used on the feature vector to identify different subsets related to similar seismic behavior for the characterization of the subsoil.

Neural networks are a subset of the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The predominant types of neural networks used for multidimensional signal processing are deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The term deep refers generically to networks having from a \"few\" to several dozen or more convolution layers, and deep learning refers to methodologies for training these systems to automatically learn their functional parameters using data representative of a specific problem domain of interest. CNNs are currently being used in a broad spectrum of application areas, all of which share the common objective of being able to automatically learn features from (typically massive) data bases and to generalize their responses to circumstances not encountered during the learning phase. Ultimately, the learned features can be used for tasks such as classifying the types of signals the CNN is expected to process. The purpose of this \"Lecture Notes\" article is twofold: 1) to introduce the fundamental architecture of CNNs and 2) to illustrate, via a computational example, how CNNs are trained and used in practice to solve a specific class of problems.

Both digital imaging, and image processing in certain areas of medical sciences is evolving quickly nowadays. Pathology is one of these fields. A digital slide is the digitized version of the good old glass slides used in pathology at least from the 1850s. These digital slides are possibly the near future of pathology in terms of repeatability of diagnosis, storage, and possibility of (tele)consultation. This paper targets the measurement of DNA content in the specimen. The significance of this measurement is, that there is a healthy ratio of cells being in the phase of mitosis (i.e. the phase of reproduction), in a living person, at a given moment. The increased ratio is a cancer marker. Consequently, the ratio is proportional to the tumor aggressivity level. Quickly growing tumor areas consist of quickly reproducing cells, so at a time more cells are reproducing, than in a healthy tissue. This measurement can probably be used to decide if the tissue (and patient) in question is healthy or has cancer. It is even possible that from the aggressivity of growth the type of cancer or the urgency of treatment can be presumed.

Bilateral filtering provides a scheme for non-iterative edge-preserving smoothing, but the results could be strongly affected by the presence of outliers. In this paper we develop a robust bilateral filter for color images, and in order to achieve this we propose to improve the bilateral filtering technique [13] by using Ordered Weighted Averaging operators. We adopt a fuzzy logic based approach: if the filtering is considered as a weighted averaging, then each filter is associated with a fuzzy set and the membership values of these fuzzy sets represent the weights. In this context, the bilateral filter is a conjunction of two fuzzy sets in the case of grayscale images: one in the spatial domain and one in a photometric domain. Applied to color images, we propose to extend the conjunction to three fuzzy sets: one in the spatial domain, one in the brightness domain and one in the chromatic domain. Taking into account the robustness of rank filters, we propose to define an OWA filter in order to obtain robust adaptive filters in brightness and chromaticity. The robustness and performance of the filter is illustrated with several experiments, revealing its ability to remove different types of noise in the presence of outliers, while preserving edges. The noise types considered are impulse noise and a combination of Gaussian noise with "salt and pepper" noise types.

Correcting the optical aberrations and the manufacturing deviations of cameras is a challenging task. Due to the limitation on volume and the demand for mass production, existing mobile terminals cannot rectify optical degradation. In this work, we systematically construct the perturbed lens system model to illustrate the relationship between the deviated system parameters and the spatial frequency response (SFR) measured from photographs. To further address this issue, an optimization framework is proposed based on this model to build proxy cameras from the machining samples' SFRs. Engaging with the proxy cameras, we synthetic data pairs, which encode the optical aberrations and the random manufacturing biases, for training the learning-based algorithms. In correcting aberration, although promising results have been shown recently with convolutional neural networks, they are hard to generalize to stochastic machining biases. Therefore, we propose a dilated Omni-dimensional dynamic convolution (DOConv) and implement it in post-processing to account for the manufacturing degradation. Extensive experiments which evaluate multiple samples of two representative devices demonstrate that the proposed optimization framework accurately constructs the proxy camera. And the dynamic processing model is well-adapted to manufacturing deviations of different cameras, realizing perfect computational photography. The evaluation shows that the proposed method bridges the gap between optical design, system machining, and post-processing pipeline, shedding light on the joint of image signal reception (lens and sensor) and image signal processing (ISP).
