To address the need for real-time analog computational circuits with reduced operating voltage requirements, two analog CMOS computational circuits are presented. One circuit computes the square-root of the product of two input currents and the other performs normalization. While these circuits were developed for imageprocessing applications their operation with a single supply down to 2V, and the use of devices available in any standard CMOS process makes them well suited for many mixed-signal applications. The circuits were simulated in PSPICE using BSIM3v3 model parameters and were successfully implemented in the AMI 1.2μm process. Simulation and measurement results are presented.

In this paper a codebook design for image compression based on the fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm is presented. The codebook design from training vectors is viewed as a fuzzy clustering problem of unlabeled data points into clusters. Due to computational cost of FCM to generate the codebook, a fast version (FFCM), which operates on the image histogram, is used to obtain a good initial codebook to start the FCM algorithm. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed compression method.

The least squares (LS) approach-a powerful tool for estimation is incorporated into a predictive lossless image compression algorithm and is proven very effective in reducing the prediction error. Based on the observation that sometimes LS has also limitations, a scheme which adaptively combines the LS-based prediction with a simpler prediction is proposed. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm can further improve the performance of the LS approach. The compression performance of the proposed technique is the same as that of TMW, the best published technique for lossless image coding. However, in reaching this, this technique requires much less computation than TMW.

We introduce a new method for acquiring and processing ultrasound signals for the location and identification of the typical primitives for map building - planes, corners and edges. Models of the echo signals received allows the feature parametrisation of their range and amplitude values. Part of the pre-processing and the classification over their standard features was done by using neural networks. Receiver saturation due to the large dynamic range is included in the models. The combination of model based methods and learning provides an algorithm which requires only sparse measurements to locate and identify targets. The transducer is a continuous wave single frequency modulated (CFTM) transmitter/receiver, not original in terms of its hardware but with little reported application in this field. The method is applied to mobile robot exploration and demonstrated with the production of a sonar map.
