Due to the limited number of implantable electrodes, correcting the input image such that the electrode stimulus ultimately reaching the visual pathway contains sufficient topological information is a challenging task. Some image processing strategies have been applied to the image-to electrode mapping process previously in order to obtain better recognition performance under simulated prosthetic vision. In this work, a method for foreground extraction and pixelation of images containing simple objects using the state-of-the-art deep learning techniques was proposed. For that, accurate foreground extraction results were obtained by training the U-net network model, pixelated them and paired with the original images. These paired samples were then used to train a Pix2pix generative adversarial network in order to achieve the image-to-pixelated image translation. The experimental results indicated that the U-net network had better foreground extraction effect than the traditional image processing strategies, and the pixelated images generated by the Pix2pix generative model contained more abundant and precise details than other strategies.

This paper sets the basis of a robot collaborative application framework that is able to perform basic interactions with a human partner, namely patrol and monitor a designated area, followed by interaction with a human participant when this is detected. The task of classifying radio frequency (RF) signals has seen recent success in employing deep neural network models. In this work, we present a combined signal processing and machine learning approach to signal classification for cochannel anomalous signals. The power spectral density and cyclostationary signal processing features of a captured signal are computed and fed into a neural net to produce a classification decision. Experiments show that our neural model utilizing both PSD and CSP features are superior to models only using CSP features, and achieve near perfect classification. Our combined signal preprocessing and machine learning approach allows for simpler neural networks with fast training times and small computational resource requirements for inference with longer preprocessing time.

In this paper, a series of research on face recognition is carried out by using the function of image processing in MATLAB, and a general face recognition simulation system with a combination of preprocessing and face recognition is implemented. First, the image is preprocessed, and then the graphical user interface is established. In order to achieve the goal of face recognition, the PCA method is used to compare the database. The simulation results show that the face recognition simulation system can realize the recognition of the face image accurately.

Any data based method is vulnerable to the problem of extrapolation, nonetheless there exists no unified theory on handling it. The main topic of this publication is to point out the differences in definitions of extrapolation and related methods. There are many different interpretations of extrapolation and a multitude of methods and algorithms, which address the problem of extrapolation detection in different fields of study. We examine popular definitions of extrapolation, compare them to each other and list related literature and methods. It becomes apparent, that the opinions what extrapolation is and how to handle it, differ greatly from each other. We categorize existing literature and give guidelines to choose an appropriate definition of extrapolation for a present problem. We also present hull algorithms, from classic approaches to recent advances. The presented guidelines and categorized literature enables the reader to categorize a present problem, inspect relevant literature and apply suitable methods and algorithms to solve a problem, which is affected by extrapolation.

Collaborative intelligence is a new paradigm for efficient deployment of deep neural networks across the mobile cloud infrastructure. By dividing the network between the mobile and the cloud, it is possible to distribute the computational workload such that the overall energy and/or latency of the system is minimized However, this necessitates sending deep feature data from the mobile to the cloud in order to perform inference. In this work, we examine the differences between the deep feature data and natural image data, and propose a simple and effective near-lossless deep feature compressor. The proposed method achieves up to 5% bit rate reduction compared to HEVC-Intra and even more against other popular image codecs. Finally, we suggest an approach for reconstructing the input image from compressed deep features that could serve to supplement the inference performed by the deep model.

In the situation of pandemic with people being ill, contagious, or suffering from long-term effects, touchless human computer interfaces, and especially brain computer interfaces (BCI), could provide humans with safe communication technologies as well as user-centric systems for rehabilitation. IIence, this work studies at first the representation of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals in a data space which is appropriate for an efficient data processing and a user-friendly interpretation. Then, we propose 3D data visualizations mapping the human brain activity into that data space. The developed representations have been successfully tested within a BCI framework through 3D data visualizations the user can see and interact with in real time.

The traditional approach to automated analysis of medical data is mostly based on statistical or theoretical-decision methods of pattern recognition. Using such methods, we can obtain many valuable items, e.g., tracking patients' movements, control of medical treatment, etc. In medical informatics there are still many problems not solvable by computers and reserved for human medical staff. Such problems can be solved by the development of scientific research toward machine intelligence. In this paper, we try to show how the computer can understand medical data instead of simple processing and analysis. Sometimes it may be useful to make semantic content analysis leading to automatic understanding of medical data, e.g., for intelligent help in the diagnosis process or in semantics-based searching through medical databases. This paper will present the application of the cognitive-based approach for intelligent semantic analysis, allowing describing automatically important diagnostic features of analyzed images. This approach is based on a special kind of image description language and grammar formalism. During the linguistic analysis of medical patterns, we can solve the problem of generalization of features of a selected image and obtaining semantic content description of the image. The most important part of this analysis depends on the "cognitive resonance" process, in which features of real images are compared with some kind of expectation taken front the knowledge base containing knowledge regarding pathological cases originating from medical practice.

With the advent of digital microscopy in pathology traditional diagnostic methods are inevitably revisited and compared to arising new approaches. image processing based solutions are developed to replace methods applied through decades. Ploidy analysis traditionally is a flow cytometry (FCM) area, but reproducing its results with computer based image processing techniques (ICM -image Cytometry) on digitalized specimen could have a few benefits of its own. This article aims to explore the possibilities of applying image processing to this field. The process is using the type of sample used by FCM, propidium iodide stained cell nuclei. A droplet of the specimen was placed on a glass slide and digitized. We created an image processing algorithm to detect the nuclei and measure their properties to support the forming of measurement-based, objective and reproducible diagnoses. This article also introduces a simple method for quantitative validation of segmentation algorithms that helped us to prioritize the further efforts in algorithm development.

image interpolation is still a widely studied issue for rescaling a low-resolution image to a high resolution image. This paper tends to modify the data-dependent steering kernel regression image interpolation in order to reduce the computational cost in point-wise determination of data-dependent or nonlinear filter coefficients. Instead solving a kernel-based weighting least mean squared minimization a novel example-based matching approach is introduced and the problem is turned into the nearest neighbor search problem. Through conducted experiments applied to several images the proposed method is verified to reduce the computational time about 50% compared with the steering kernel regression algorithm while almost maintaining image quality.
