An estimation approach is described for three-dimensional reconstruction from line integral projections using incomplete and very noisy data. Generalized cylinders parameterized by stochastic dynamic models are used to represent prior knowledge about the properties of objects of interest in the probed domain. The object models, a statistical measurement model, and the maximum a posteriori probability performance criterion are combined to reformulate the reconstruction problem as a computationally challenging nonlinear estimation problem. For computational feasibility, a suboptimal hierarchical algorithm is described whose individual steps are locally optimal and are combined to satisfy a global optimality criterion. The formulation and algorithm are restricted to objects whose center axis is a single-valued function of a fixed spatial coordinate. The authors study a method for deriving MIMD (multiple-instruction-stream, multiple-data-stream) multiprocessor scheduling with the shortest sampling duration, including processor communication time, for general signalprocessing algorithms. The method makes use of the repetitive nature of digital signalprocessing, which reduces the computational complexity of searching for the optimal assignment of operations to processors. The examples show that the proposed algorithm obtains the nearly optimum solution in most cases and works very efficiently.< >

A description is given and a comparison is made of different interpolation schemes for the computation of the Radon transform and backprojections. The nearest neighbor method is fastest, but the resulting reconstructed image is not very good. For D=1 the best method to use is linear interpolation because its performance is virtually identical to the line-length method at a reduced computational complexity. If D>1, the best reconstruction is obtained using the line-length method. The authors compared implementations of these procedures on two DSP chips. Although the DSP 16 clock cycle time is only 55 ns, which is 3.6 times faster than the TMS32020 200-ns clock cycle time, it performs backprojection computations only about 1.8 times faster than the slower TMS32020 chip. The 60-ns cycle-time TMS320C30 is capable of performing the Radon and inverse transforms faster than the 55-ns DSP16, due to the differences in instruction sets and architectures of the chips.< >

Discrete relaxation techniques have proven useful in solving a wide range of problems in digital signal and digital imageprocessing, artificial intelligence, operations research, and machine vision. Much work has been devoted to finding efficient hardware architectures. This paper shows that a conventional hardware design for a Discrete Relaxation Algorithm (DRA) suffers from O(n2m3) time complexity and O(n2m2) space complexity. By reformulating DRA into a parallel computational tree and using a multiple tree-root pipelining scheme, time complexity is reduced to O(nm), while the space complexity is reduced by a factor of 2. For certain relaxation processing, the space complexity can even be decreased to O(nm). A multiprocessor system for fast imageprocessing is presented that has two categories of high-speed processors: AD-p (optimized for pixel address calculations) and DA-p (optimized for integer arithmetic). The resulting AD-DA configuration can be used as a powerful general-purpose imageprocessing system and is well suited for splitting up vision tasks at another level: the AD-p will search for 'busy' parts in the image and the DA-p will do the computational work. Both tasks can be pipelined efficiently, as shown in an application. Since each processor is implemented each on a single board, the resulting system offers an excellent means for fast automated visual inspection.
