A method to solve a general broadband beamformer design problem is formulated as a quadratic program. As a special ease, the minimax near field design problem of a broadband beamformer is solved as a quadratic programming formulation of the weighted Chebyshev approximation problem. Knowing the geometry of both endocard and epicard is important in both qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the cardiac function. The reliability of existing algorithms for automatic wall tracking in 2D echocardiography decreases as the signal-to-noise ratio decreases. The local edge definition can be missing for both endocard and epicard. These image dropouts can be filled in by localizing the contour with available edge information and adjusting the other contour by requiring stability in the wall thickness. This approach requires a simultaneous extraction of both endocard and epicard. In this paper we accomplish this by using a generalized computational framework of active contours, and demonstrate initially the superiority of the approach in both synthetic and real ultrasound images. This has been implemented by modeling legal configurations for both endocard and epicard. The local energy contributions can hence be defined freely as a function of contour curvature, wall thickness, derivative of wall thickness, and image signatures at both endocard and epicard

Two-dimensional adaptive filters are useful in a wide variety of image and video processing applications. Several different two-dimensional structures and algorithms have been developed, the most recent of which is a fast 2-D FIR quasi-Newton adaptive filter. Quasi-Newton search algorithms can compensate for the eigenvalue disparity of the autocorrelation matrix in colored signal environments. This paper describes a new video compression algorithm based block and vector transformations for prioritized packet switched networks. We demonstrate that for a fixed high priority bandwidth, this algorithm maintains a superior minimum quality video service compared to purely block based coding techniques with only a small increase in the computational load. Non-linear filters have been used in many signalprocessing applications, for example, to obtain optimum signal extraction or detection in the presence of random noise. The weighted median filter (WMF), of which the standard median is a special case, is a novel non-linear technique designed for 2D imageprocessing. A major advantage of the WMF is its flexibility in design to deal with a wide variety of properties. This paper describes a commonly used class W(4,4,1) of the WMF. As with most non-linear methods, the computational demands of this technique are high and require a non-trivial number of `expensive' operations. A data parallel approach for efficient implementation of the WMF is described and implemented on two architecturally dissimilar supercomputers, the Convex C3840 and the Connection Machine CM-200. An analysis of the performance obtained from these two high performance parallel platforms is presented.
